600 participants conquer Hannover’s Maschsee

One day prior to the official start of the European Universities Rowing Championships 2015, almost 600 participants of 81 universities from all over Europe have arrived in Hannover. Thus, the grand opening of the biggest EUC Rowing of all times is within reach. All athletes await an outstanding atmosphere right in the middle of Hannover at EUC RowingCAMPUS.

„We are looking forward to a unique rowing festival in the heart of Hannover. The preparations are finished – we are ready to get star-ted,” Michaela Röhrbein, Head of the Organising Committee, says with regard to the highlight of German university sports. The hosts, the De-partment of Academic Sports Services of Leibniz Universität Hannover and the Hannover Regatta Association, who managed the organisation

of EUC Rowing together, promise to bring the regatta to life. As a spe-cial highlight, all competitions can be watched online on a live-stream via the official event homepage (www.euc-rowing2015.eu). Further information as well as numerous photos and videos will be uploaded to the facebook-page of this EUC Rowing and of the German University Sports Federation (Allgemeiner Deutscher Hochschulsport) enabling families and friends at home to watch and cheer for their teams.

Moreover, a varied programme attracts the Hannoverian audience to Lake Maschsee. 200 volunteers support the organisers in making sure that the EUC will be a European sports festival and international meeting place. Besides live commentary during all three competiti-on days, a broadcast of the regatta on a video wall will round the

programme off. When one of the 24 athletes from Hannover are featured on the video wall, the audience’s cheerings are expec-ted to be especially noticeable. Jann-Edzard Junkmann, winner of the Universiade and U23 World Champion, is looking forward to the support of the home crowd. „The Uni-versiade was the best competition I have ever experienced. As a student event the games were swayed by an amazing atmo-sphere, which lead to great international cooperation and exchange. I am hoping for a comparable experience here in my home town.” The first boats will glide through the water of Lake Maschsee, tomorrow, 10:00 h. The medal hunt will be opened by the wo-men’s lightweight single sculls.

The Opening Ceremony on Thursday will be the official kick-off for the 9th European Universities Championships 2015 in Hannover. After the heats of the morning, the one-hour programme begins at 17:00 at the northern waterfront of Lake Maschsee.

As usual for major sports events, the ceremony will begin with the march of all athletes. Nearly 600 participants will walk through a trellis of the 18 national flags holding signs of their university. The students will be officially welcomed by the president of the Leibniz Universität Hannover, Prof. Dr. Volker Epping. Besides raising the EUSA-flag and playing the EUSA-hymn, the hosts will preen and posture with a varied entertainment programme. A mix of show and live music will be pre-sented. Among others, the Big Band of Leibniz Universität Hannover will strike up.

The teams meet for the entrance of the teams at 16:30 h at the mo-nument of the torchbearer next to the finish tower.
