Environmental trends and perspectives in the western Balkans: future production and consumption patterns

EEA Report No 1/2010

This study looks at the forces shaping the future of the environment in the western Balkans, and in particular at the role of consumption and production patterns. It then analyses the drivers — such as social, political and economic forces — that are shaping production and consumption patterns. Changes in these patterns will directly influence the region’s environment.

It concludes by looking at how different actors in the region can act to shape environmental futures.

The factory of life Why soil biodiversity is so important

Biodiversity loss and climate change are two of the most pressing challenges of our time, and soil biodiversity is part of the solution to both. Yet it is under constant threat, largely from human activities that we can control. It is our responsibility, therefore, to preserve the quality of soil before it is too late, and before its resident species and their fragile habitats are lost. That is why, at the European Commission, we have put soil at the heart of our thinking.

Women in scienceToday, women are actively participating in science, while the number of women among the world’s top scientists is growing. In fact, the face of modern science would be unrecognisable without the major contributions made by women. This volume shows that, despite the invisibility of women in the historical narrative of mainstream science, science was not always exclusively a man’s world.

Experience of discrimination, social marginalisation and violence A comparative study of Muslim and non-Muslim youth in three EU Member States

Social marginalisation and discrimination have severe consequences for any society and both need to be addressed as a priority, as they are linked to violent behaviour in young people. This research shows a high degree of overlap between three EU Member States when considering explanatory factors for violent attitudes or acts of violence committed by young people.

EU-MIDIS European Union minorities and discrimination survey Main results report

This is the first-ever EU-wide survey of immigrant and ethnic minority groups’ experiences of discrimination and victimisation in everyday life. Addressing the lack of reliable and comparable data on minorities in many EU countries, it examines experiences of discriminatory treatment, racist crime victimisation, awareness of rights and reporting of complaints.

EU-MIDIS involved face-to-face interviews with 23 500 persons from selected immigrant and ethnic minority groups in all 27 Member States of the European Union. Some 5 000 persons from the majority population were also interviewed to compare the results.

More information on the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights is available through its website (http://fra.europa.eu).

Workplace violence and harassment: a European pictureConcern about the effects of workplace violence and harassment on the health and safety of workers has been growing over the last decade. Both third-party violence and harassment may have extremely negative consequences for the individuals affected and their families, co-workers and organisations, as well as society as a whole.

The report concludes that there is a clear need to promote and disseminate good practice and prevention measures that are sensitive to the national context. Some measures proposed by the European Union, ILO, WHO and national experts are presented in the report.

European guidelines for quality assurance in colorectal cancer screening and diagnosis First edition

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common newly diagnosed cancer in Europe and the second most common cause of cancer deaths. In the 27 Member States of the EU, approximately 330 000 new cases and 150 000 deaths occur each year. Many of these deaths could be avoided through early detection, by making effective use of screening tests followed by appropriate treatment.

These guidelines aim to point out the need for appropriate quality assurance at all levels when performing CRC screening.

eur-lex.europa.eu — The gateway to European Union lawEUR-Lex combines an elaborate tool for professional users and an information source easily accessible to all.

The EUR-Lex website provides entirely free access to the world’s largest documentary repository on European Union law. It is designed for those who are interested in EU law and exists in all the official languages of the European Union. It gives users access to EU documents in PDF, HTML, TIFF or DOC format.

The content of the site dates back to 1951 and amounts to some 2 300 000 documents. The database is updated daily and every year some 15 000 documents are added.

You can:

consult the Official Journal of the European Union online;

access EU legislation and other documents by: — searching for documents, — browsing through collections and directories.

Official Journal of the European Union

The L (Legislation) and C (Information and Notices) series of the Official Journal of the European Union are loaded on to the EUR-Lex site early each working day. This allows the EUR-Lex user to follow the latest developments in EU law. The Official Journal has been available online in PDF format since 1 January 1998. Texts published in the Official Journal before 1998 can be consulted in HTML format or downloaded in TIFF format from an optical archive.

New features

New features have been added to EUR-Lex. Browsing through COM documents was added to the ‘Preparatory acts’ collection. The options of searching for SEC documents and national execution measures were made available in ‘Search by natural number’. To facilitate access to selected documents, permanent links have been added to each bibliographic notice.
