ACROSSING (Advanced TeChnologies and PlatfoRm fOr Smarter ASsisted LivING)

1. DMU ESR Recruitment

ESR recruitment in DMU has been conducted by strictly following UK national regulations, EU recommendations and the recruitment strategy in the ACROSSING proposal. The process includes the following steps, namely 1) the creation of ESR positions based on the University’s internal procedures; 2) specify the responsibilities and duties of the post holders in the Job Specification and the capabilities, expertise and skills of the expected post holder in the Personal Specifications, based on the ACROSSING proposal and the proposed individual projects; 3) decide the advertisement text and advertisement channels based on EU H2020 MSCA rules aiming to cover as wider as possible regions; 4) coordinate and circulate the recruitment advertisement on explicit open and closing dates; 5) collect all applications on the closing date; 6) conduct shortlisting within two weeks after the closing date by a shortlisting panel; 7) conduct interview for shortlisted applicants with three weeks, and applicants will be ranked based on the criteria described in the ACROSSING proposal; 8) appoint ESRs based on the ranks.

If there is no enough number of high-quality eligible applications, steps 3 to 6 will be repeated to have another round of recruitment. If there is no enough number of appointable applicants, step 3 to 7 will be repeated to have another round of recruitment.

Each step of this process follows relevant, rules, either internal, UK national or EU level, guidelines and good practices.

The UPM’s Telecommunications Engineering School, is looking for TWO self-motivated Early Stage Researchers (ESR) to undertake research and development on active ageing and assisted living within the EU H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN ACROSSING project. These posts are open to all nationalities all over the world.

ACROSSING combines the efforts of a multi-disciplinary network of 26 leading European research groups, industry partners, and user organisations, to develop an open SH technology infrastructure and train 15 ESRs across sectors on concepts and methodologies of SHs towards the PhD. To achieve this, ACROSSING designs 15 topically complementary research projects covering the four core SH research areas, i.e. sensing, context inference, human system interaction and service based infrastructure, and four main SH application categories, i.e. independent living with cognitive impairments, self-management of chronic diseases, wellbeing and empowerment of the elderly.

Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) is the oldest and largest Spanish technological university as well as a renowned European institution. The dynamism of R+D+I activity at the UPM, together with the transfer of knowledge to society, is among its lines of strategy. Under FP7, UPM currently holds 51 Marie Curie projects and has employed 48 fellow researchers. Life Supporting Technologies (LifeSTech), where the 2 ESRs will be based, is a research, development and innovation group at UPM’s Telecommunications Engineering School (ETSIT). The group is part of Madrid’s Moncloa Campus of International Excellence. It is one of the main Spanish research groups in the field of e-Health.

The 2 ESRs hosted in Universidad Politecnica de Madrid will be responsible for developing novel approaches, architectures, technologies and tools to enable and support active aging, wellbeing and independent living. They will each undertake research in a well-defined individual research project – refer to the individual project descriptions, ESR06 and ESR07 in the ACROSSING website – and will be integrated to an experienced research and innovation group. In addition to this, they will also contribute to network-level research activities, technology and system integration, deliverables, event organisation and public engagement for dissemination and impact.

The ESRs will be required to undertake PhD studies and must fulfil the requirements of the university's doctoral training programme. They will have opportunities to visit other network partners for secondments, and attend the research and training events of the network. All costs will be fully funded by the EU MSCA programme which also offers highly competitive and attractive salary and working conditions.

Project Title Development of a modular platform and universal services for efficient recognition of human behaviour

Objectives

For real world problems in human behavior detection modular frameworks with universal interfaces are required. The aim of this work is to provide a modular concept for a framework for multi-modal and multi-hierarchical detection of human behavior. Among

others, the two key approaches used will be particle filtering methods and detection of temporal-spatial patterns in streams of data.

Particle filtering methods are a very general and useful framework for estimating the dynamic internal state of a complex, nonlinear stochastic system when the parameters are known.

For practical applications running on non-specialized machines, the optimal usage of resources is essential for computationally intensive applications. One approach is the use of OpenCL to gain access to hundreds or thousands of additional processing units already present on many graphics cards.

The behavior pattern recognition framework shall be built upon an existing Smart Home framework. The implementation will be evaluated on use cases based on ACROSSING application areas and embedded into a modular platform which is itself embedded into a cloud based architecture supporting the web of modular platforms concept.

Expected Results

A reference implementation of a MCMC framework using OpenCL

Implementation of reference real-world scenarios

Evaluation and demonstration of the above.

round In progress

During the 1st round of the selection process, six candidates applied for the ESR13 position, as shown in the

table above. All candidates were contacted so as to be interviewed, however, two applicants informed that they were not interested in the position because of the selection of another position and therefore did not attend an interview. The rest of applicants were interviewed through teleconference so as to provide further information on their activities and knowledge on the issues of signal processing, information retrieval with data mining & machine learning, Knowledge on sensor data acquisition, Experience working with IoT techniques.

Following the interviews, the candidates were ranked as shown in the table above, on the basis of their documented experience and its relevance to the position requirements. The first two candidates (#1 and #2) had a research background relevant to the ESR13 position requirements and therefore formulated the final suitable candidates list of the process, given the limited relative experience of the rest two candidates. Following the ranking of the candidates #1 and #2, candidate #1 was selected to be offered the ESR13 position. However, due to personal reasons, the candidate did not accept the position. Due to the withdrawal of the first applicant, the second one was selected according to its provided experience (publications, C/C++ experience, etc.) in the ESR13 topic. However, the second applicant refused to sign the offered contract. CERTH was informed on this by the applicant in September 2016.

The selection process was executed by a Committee formulated by two internal members from CERTH and two external members (two professors from two Greek Universities).

Following the above, CERTH initiated a second round for the selection process, which is currently in progress. The 2

nd round advertisement has been circulated and the deadline for applications on this is on the

7th of October 2016.
