Introduction

Invasive alien plant species (IAPs) are introduced accidentally, non-

native, spread rapidly and outcompete with the indigenous plants.

IAPs are destructive to the ecosystem, and cause threat to the

environment.

Uses of invasive alien plant species:

Medicine

Ornamentals

Fire wood

Food

Investigate the use of invasive alien plants for medicinal purpose by

traditional healers in Capricorn district, Limpopo Province.

Ethnobotanical survey

The permit was obtained from traditional councils.

Snowball method (Convenience sampling method) resulting in 30healers being interviewed.

Data collected via a semi-structured questionnaire and guided fieldwork with traditional healers. .

Plant collection

Collected invasive plants were identified using literature andspecimens at Larry Leach Herbarium.

Voucher specimen of the plants were prepared and depositedat the university herbarium.

Data analysis

Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the data.

Conclusions

Traditional healers use invasive plant species in the study area tocombat various ailments.

Antifungal activity and phytochemical studies.

Awareness of invasive alien plant species for the traditional healers inthe study area.

Therefore, there is a need for careful consideration of IAPs that areused medicinally as they face eradication measures as part of SouthAfrican management strategy.
