INTRAREGIONAL MIGRATION: EXPANSION OF GHETTO

• African American immigrants of the 20th century clustered with the small number from the 19th century● Neighborhoods became known as ghettos

• After living conditions from those of the Jews● 1/2 million African Americans packed into a 3 square mile of

Chicago known as the South Side ghetto

● Densities• Ghetto’s- 100,000/square-mile• Suburbs- 5,000/square-mile
