Pastoral Letter Dear loving members of the family of God. Greetings to you in the Holy name of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is such a privilege and joy to serve the Lord along with you all. Our Lord has been faith-ful in every way. His love, grace and mercy are abounding in our lives. I praise God for your love, support and your partnership in the ministry at BMC & WMC. Days are passing by and there are vibrant programs and activities in our church that are planned with the passion to extend God’s kingdom on earth. The Tamil camp which was held in the “Claret Nivas”, Carmelaram, resulted in the sowing of the seed in the lives of campers and we had the Tamil congregation & Hindi speaking people of our churches. The response was overwhelming and the testimonies were heart touching, faith increasing and transforming. It is visible affirmation that the church is catering to the holistic development, and the confirmation for the same was the questions raised in the interactive and informal sessions. The camp was meticulously

planned and executed, and I want to praise and thank God for the dedicated team who worked tirelessly. The love for the nation and patriotism was exhibited by Flag Hosting on the Republic Day. I urge all our members to take ownership of our church activities for the Glory of God in establishing God’s reign among individuals, families and communities. Henry Martyn quoted thus on missions: “The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions. The nearer we get to Him, the more intensely missionary we become”. How true the quote is, and every Christian from the depths of one’s heart should be a missionary. The ‘Missions’ wing of our Church is going to observe ‘Missions Sunday’ on 24th February, 2019 and the theme is “Neighbourhood Evangelism.” Prior to that there will be programs to reach out to our neighbours and your participation will be highly appreciated and it is our Christian responsibility. In the month of January we mediated on the theme “Renewal by the Spirit” and in our mediations we were enriched with challenges to inculcate Christian virtues in our daily living from the Epistle of I Peter. In continuation, during this month, we shall be mediating on the theme “Our identity in Christ” primarily based on I Peter 2:9. The identity of individuals and communities as the world sees them could for some be an advantage and for many sadly becomes a disadvantage. In contrast, our Christian identity which is divinely ordained and invisible and which will be revealed in glory are… You are God’s “Chosen Generation” His “Royal Priest-hood” His “Holy nation”, His “Peculiar people”, all the old titles of God’s peo-ple now belong to us. Praise be to our God!

May the Lord richly bless you in this new month.

Yours in His service Rev. D Joshua Das

You are God’s elect - Rev. Joshua Das

Introduction I Peter 1:1-2, Election is one of the fundamental and central realities of the Old Testament. Even though it is less mentioned than covenant, creation, exodus etc., it is believed to have been the initial act by which Yahweh; the God of Israel came into relation with the people of Israel. Election involves a much wider appreciation of how Israel related to other people. It is used in Biblical Theological discourse to refer to the idea that God chooses a people or individuals to belong to him in a unique way.

Etymology The Hebrew root bhr means a careful choice occasioned by actual needs and thus a very conscious choice and one that can be examined in the light of certain criteria in contrast perhaps to making a selection, to deciding as an act of an especially intimate relationship. The terms “love:” and “hate” in Genesis 29:31 and Malachi 1:2-3 are election terms.

    Purpose of election

The Old Testament claims that God chose Israel as God’s special people. Some portions of the Old Testament seem to leave the answer to the ques-tion, why God chose Israel, in the realm of mystery, and modern scholars have pondered the mystery of election. Some part of the Old Testament an-swer that Israel was chosen to be a blessing to the nations. Scholars give different answer to this question.

    Characteristics of God’s election

    1) Election is a creative – redemptive action of God in the Historical process 2) The elect are assured a special blessing or a close relationship with Yah-

weh but election obligates the elect to carry out a specific function. 3) Not only Israel but Yahweh elects other people for his purpose.

Election in the History of Israel

Israel was elected as the people of God by the call of Abraham, but it is re-vealed through Moses. Exodus was an important event in the election of Isra-el. God elected individuals as Judges to lead the people of Israel them in wars and protect them from their enemies. God appointed Prophets among Israel, to bring them in God’s people whenever they went away from God. God also

  • Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 7

selected kings to rule over them when they rejected Yahweh as their ruler. God also chose the other people even to punish Israel and to give them free-dom (Cyrus). God selects place for his dwelling among the people.

Election and prophets Pre-exilic prophets almost did not talk anything about election of Israel. Only Amos and Jeremiah use such terminology. Zimmerly suggest that this silence was not because the pre-exilic prophets did not know the election tradition. Instead their silence shows how critical the prophets are of all self-satisfied claims on the part of Israel to be a chosen people.

Theology of election For a long time, the concept of election played an important role in the theol-ogy of Old Testament. It designated the entirety of God’s action concerning Israel the most striking affirmation of theology of election is found in Deuter-onomy 7:6-8. The theology of election given here, with the assertion that Yahweh has chosen Israel marks a very prominent feature of the teaching of the book of Deuteronomy. The whole tradition concerning Abraham and oth-er patriarchs of the nation is viewed in the perspective of belief in election. The promise made to Abraham that his descendants would become a nation, possess the land of Canaan, and be blessing to other nations conveys most of the ideas implicit in the theology of election. There are three institutions namely kingship, the center of sanctuary and the land which served as a visi-ble sign of Israel’s elect status.

Election and rejection God elects and rejects at the same time; God makes demands and supplies what is lacking in humane. God elects by reason of his free and sovereign will. In the view of Law God rejects sinners. God rejected Esau because of his unwarrantable attitude towards his right of primogeniture. The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart, an act of God, is due to the guilt of Pharaoh; that God pun-ishes sin with sin. Rejection is somehow practically always placed in an ethi-cal and religious light. The fact that Cain’s sacrifice is not accepted is given an ethical aspect in Gen. 4:7

Conclusion In Old Testament Israel is called to be the light of the nations, at present age the Church is called to be the light of the Whole world. Most of the time Isra-el failed in it call; God has given special privilege to the Church to be a part in God’s saving action of the whole world. It should witness itself by serving all people irrespective of all the barriers and in being an agent of promoting just order in the world.

    உன் சிருஷ்டிகபே நிபன” பிேசங்கி 12:1 Youth feedback - Priyankanagar

The Youth camp during the Annual Tamil Camp held during 25-27 January 2019 was very useful to us. We learnt a lot of things that help us to maintain good relation between God and us. It was a good experience to me. I learnt more about my spiritual life and specially on how to lead a Christian life. From the learnings, we are going to be useful for God’s minis-try. Thanks to all the speakers for their many teachings and the things we could learn from them. Some of the decisions that I made in this camp are: I will start reading Bible regularly, I will apply the learnings from camp to grow in my spiritual life and take steps to live as God’s child. I can say that this camp has transformed life and I am going to start my life afresh.

Annual Camp – Experience – Mrs Angelin Stephen

Tamil Annual Camp conducted during 25-27th January was very use-ful Group-wise sessions arranged for Adults, Youth and kids were helpful for the Spiritual growth. It was glad to see people talking in multiple lan-guages joining together in Praise and Worship sessions. It enabled fellow-ship with various people groups. Informal talk and combined Q&A session were helpful for individuals to get clarified about their individual / personal doubts. The greenery and pollution-free environment helped our mind to be peaceful. Facilities such as accommodation and food were very good.

    Children’s Camp 2019 - Mas. Charles

The Children’s camp in the Annual Tamil camp this year was an event in which God talked into our hearts. I am so glad that I was able to be a part of it and learn from it. A team led by Robin anna from HIKIDS minis-tries taught us how to live a life for Jesus. There were about 55 children in the camp. We enjoyed this time of two days learning about living for Jesus. We learnt about the missionary Stephen Lungo. We had a lot of fun-filled activities. We were separated into 3 groups and had individual group activi-ties. We learnt many new songs. In the final session, we committed our lives to Jesus and decided to follow him and live as children of God. These two days of learning gave us the motivation to live for Jesus. We have learnt a lot from this camp. Everyone had something to take home back and none returned empty-handed.

Small Mercies - Ms Ruth Christopher Small mercies, as my Mother would call these tiny unexpected de-

tails that God takes care for us. These are not top priority details but small

unmentioned desires and dreams that are made real because Jesus is a

God who knows the heart of every one of us. It doesn’t matter to Him

whether it is the basic things of life or greater necessities. This is a simple

thing in the sight of the Lord–IIKings3:18a.

Well, I did have a chance to experience plenty of these small mercies of

God. I would like to share them with you and hope the Lord will bless them

    to you.

    Love’s Depiction [2005-2006]

Back in my school days I used to look for a very famous wall-hanger which

has a cross on it and a question of a human asking God, “How much do

You love me?”. Though it was a famous depiction, it was still hard to find

one and if I ever did, it was too costly. So, then I asked God to give it to me

if it was His will. And as days went by, it was about that time of the year

when we had our Sunday School Final Exams. Faring well, we were called

to the altar for an appreciation and this time they gave us all wall hangers

with verses on it but guess what, when I unwrapped mine, I had a lovely ques-

tion on it answered beautifully saying, “This much”, then He stretched out

    His arms and died.

    Cushions [2008-2010]

We (my sister and me) used to accompany our parents to the programs in

various places. This time it was for a camp in Erode. During the evening

games time, the camp organizers took us out for shopping. A wholesale

home utility shop in which as I looked around, I found a pack of tiny heart

shaped cushions in various colours. I asked mom if I can get those, but due

to the pack being costly, I was denied a yes. Half-heartedly as walked out

of the shop I just said, “Jesus, I liked those, if only I could have them…”. The

day ended and I forgot about the cushions. The next day afternoon, during

the closing session of the camp, the organizers, gave us a gift. Well yes,

your guess is right, it was the pack of heart shaped cushions. Yesterday

desire became today’s reality, proving that God knew my heart. Auto-ride [2013-2014]

Staying at a distance of 1.3 kms from office, this day I decided to take an

auto and did get an auto to office. On the way I opened my bag to fetch 25

rupees and found my purse missing. I then realized that I had taken it out

and never left it back in again. I was so scared of how this auto-man will re-

act, so I started looking inside my bag if I had money anywhere and just

found a 5-rupee coin. I got all terrified thinking, what would I tell him?

Should I ask him to come and collect the money later? Should I leave him

with my mobile number so that he can collect the money later? Is that safe?

God please help! As my mind boggled through, we were getting close to

the destination and he stopped there. Then I mustered up some courage to

tell him that, this is all I had and handed the 5-rupee coin to him, I also told

him I left my purse home. He looked at me, took the 5rupee coin and said

it’s alright and went his way. When God intervenes in my mess there is al-

    ways a message.

    Rains and Clothes [2014-2015]

It was the early rainy season and Bangalore being famous for its specific

location rains, it had not affected my office area but when I got out of the

bus, I found the area where my PG was, soaked in rain. To my dismay I had

dried clothes on the terrace and my mind was so disturbed as I walked to my

PG. I was talking to God saying, “You knew my clothes are up there and

they need to dry, yet You sent the rains”, then God reminded me that there

are so many people dependent on this rain and He provided for them. So,

then I said, God, if it is so, I will want my clothes dry when I go and collect

them. I went directly to the terrace and yes, the floor was completely wet

while the clothes were dry. Well, “NOTHING IS TOO DIFFI-

CULT FOR HIM”, and He did it again!

    Sermon Day [Mar2016]

Given a chance to preach during the Lenten days in church, I was preparing

for it and in the corner of heart I had a desire to have a new clothing for the

maiden occasion. The time was too short for an online delivery and for me

  • Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 13

to go shopping as well. Just a couple of days before I had to share the ser-

mon, my team in office had planned for my birthday celebration. Usually, it

used to be just a cake and an office desk décor, but when I unwrapped my

gift, it was a beautiful Kurti, which I indeed wore for my debut in church.

Even my unsaid never did go unnoticed.

    Health Supplements [20thJuly2017]

Reclining on my bed that evening, I was keying in the daily devotional mes-

sage, while I found some symptoms of anaemia on my fingers. My mind was

immediately carried away with thoughts about this. As I continued keying

in, I realized my mind worried about something. I then recalled my worry and

thought to myself-all that I need now is a big bowl of boiled beetroot, which

I used to get in my previous PG, though it was tasteless, I still had some-

thing to keep me healthy. Here in this PG for hundreds of people, they will

not choose to make it, due to the cost. My mind suggested, why not ask

someone in office to bring beetroot but later contradicted thinking how

they will feel about it. I re-focused my attention in sending the message and

forgot about this big situation that I dramatized in my head. Eventually,

after sending the message, I rushed down for dinner to find a big vessel full

of beetroot. I brought my food up to my room and thanked God for every

    single mouth of food.

As The Almighty Father’s sons and daughters when we rely on Him, we

can be sure that He can take care of not just the greater (planned & pre-

pared) but even the smaller/ Insignificant detail which is discussed in secret

or even unsaid. In case you have mountains that stand as the greatest yet

the worst reminder, remember His small mercies, and that will break your

mountain down to ground zero, reinforcing that our God is able.

Now to Him who is able to [carryout His purpose and] do supera-bundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us. To Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus through-out all generations forever and ever. Amen (Ephesians 3:20,21).

The Discipline of Prayer - (Part-4, Continued from January issue) D.C. Frankin and Noel Tomas Important characteristics of Prayer 3. Prayer is adoration and worship Adoration means deep love with deep respect. God called us to love Him with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind and with all our strength (Deuteronomy 6:5 and Mark 12:30-31). Love can never be forced. It comes by knowing and experiencing the amazing goodness of our God. He is our creator, sustainer, saviour and King. He sent His only begotten Son to die

for our sins. We read in Ephisians 2: 4, 5 “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved”. How can we not respond to Him in love if we had tasted this abundant Grace? Prayer is love for God; choosing to be with Him in His presence, adoring and worshiping Him, starting the day alone in his presence, and continue along the entire day with the fragrance of His presence. Jesus’ love for His Father is the best example for us. The gospel of Luke offers us many glimpses into the prayer life of Jesus as he sought to spend time alone with God the Father. One of them is Luke 5:16 “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed”. We read in Mark 1: 35 “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed”. Also in Matthew 14: 23 “After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone”. There are plenty of examples of people worshiping Jesus with deep adora-tion. Out of the ten lepers who were healed, one came back and fell at His feet to worship and adore Him for the goodness shown to him by the Lord (Luke 17: 11 – 19). To the Lady in Luke 7: 36 - 50, what mattered was the Lord's sweet presence; the scorn of Simon the Pharisee did not matter, nor the objection of Judas to Mary in John 12: 2 - 8; they poured out their love on Him with the best they had in adoration and worship. Christ accepted their love and appreciated them. Since He is our Heavenly Father we go first to Him for any and every need; any trouble, small or big, being sure that he will answer us according to his goodness, in his time and in his way, which is best for us. When we sin, we go to Him in repentance seeking His forgiveness; and our Gracious God who is rich in mercy forgives us and continues to love us with His everlasting love. So let us seek the Lord’s help to pray in love. Further – Do you have a “prayer closet”? ie. A quiet and secret place to get away and pray. Find a place to pray and before long you will begin to feel God’s pleasure at having made Him a sole priority. Of course, we can pray anytime and any-where but… We will find a special intimacy with God when we come aside to/with Him in our own quiet/secret place. May the Holy Spirit help us to grow in endearing fellowship with God our Heavenly Father through a consistent prayer life, as did our Lord Jesus!
