ETHEKWINI ELECTRICITY TRAINING CENTRE Address: 17 Supply Road, Springfield, Durban Ward: 25 Client: eThekwini Electricity Contract Period: February 2016 – November 2017 Contract Value: R15,9 million (ex. VAT) 17 Supply Road, Springfield, is already home to the award-winning Electricity Training Centre designed by McCaffery Wilkinson and Little Architects. Due to a demand for more technical training space and offices eThekwini Electricity commissioned an investigation into, either an extension of the existing building, or a new building in-keeping with the character and scale of the original building. The scale, character and sensitive contextual response of the original training centre has been the main design informant for the new facility throughout the design process. As far as possible, the new building responds to and reflects the original design to assist in making the transition from old to new as seamless and considerate as possible. The new building will work hand-in-hand with the existing facility and will provide three new training workshops on the ground floor, staff offices and training rooms above and a spill-out area for staff and trainees on the southern side of the building.
