This enthusiasm was due to the popularity gained by Stephanie Meyer’s books. The movie was the second in the Twilight Saga, yet the first movie in which the director worked closely with the author, Stephanie Meyer. This allowed the movies scenes to depict more accurate chapters from the book, which in turn pleased “Twilight” fanatics that had complained about how the first movie was inaccurate. Some die-hard fans have seen the movie multiple times. “I have seen “New Moon” twice, it’s my phone background. I love it and I would see it again,” said senior Caroline Pierce. Even waitresses at Strawn’s say the movie was beautifully done. Whether someone is team Edward or team Jacob, it does not matter; the fans are all different ages, but all completely devoted.

History of the “Enterprise”

Captain Henry Miller Shreve, steamboat pilot of the1800s and namesake of our high school, is famous for hisefforts in opening the inland waterways of America. Not sofamous, however, is Shreve’s first steamboat, the“Enterprise,” and its role in American history.

Wary of the Fulton-Livingston monopoly over tradeon the Mississippi River, Shreve realized the necessity ofbuilding a superior steam vessel. As a result, Shreve formeda partnership with entrepreneur Daniel French to design sucha boat. The result of their work was the steamboat“Enterprise.” On Dec. 1, 1814, she left on her maiden voy-age with 29-year-old Shreve as her captain.

This first voyage was no leisurely trip. A preciouscargo of munitions and supplies was desperately needed byGeneral Andrew Jackson’s troops in New Orleans. The longtrip down the Mississippi was a success, and within twoweeks the cargo was safely delivered to Jackson’s camp.Shreve’s fearless attitude and the dependability of the“Enterprise” were crucial factors in the victory at the Battleof New Orleans in the War of 1812.

Now, as the student newspaper of Captain ShreveHigh School, The Enterprise strives to emulate the fearless-ness and dependability of Shreve and his ship in reporting thenews important to you, the students of Captain Shreve.

Late testing inconvenientSince the 2008-2009

school year, Caddo Parishhas had a policy of havingmidterm after break. However, this policy hassome students andteachers questioning theirmethods.

The rule was put intoplace because the SchoolBoard wanted to delay thestart of the school yearuntil it was less hot, so inorder to finish out thenine-weeks, they delayedstarting school by oneweek, thus pushing backthe midterms one, orrather three, weeks.

Many argue that this isa terrible idea, due to thefact that most students willnot study over the two-week break. It’s supposedto be two weeks awayfrom the stresses ofschool but instead it’sturned into something else– a stress-filled, extendedstudy hour.

Many students, like

those in history classes, have dozens, if notpossibly over 100 pages ofnotes to pore over. Someteachers, like historyteacher Tiffanie Langdon, have already passed outstudy guides for themidterms because theyknow their students wouldbe overwhelmed.

Also, after two weeks ofnot studying, studentscome back to study guidesfor 6 classes to cram for intwo to 4 days. This seemslike an unfair burden onstudents, and teachers aswell.

Students will most likelyforget any new informationthey learned before thebreak during the twoweeks of low brain activity. Therefore, even thoughthey cram during thoselast two days beforetesting, they will make alower grade than theywould have had the testbeen at a more convenient

time.Teachers have to come

back and rush to gradetests, lobbying for space atthe Scantron machine andspeed reading overdiscussion questions andshort answers. Who knowswhat kind of mistakes aremade due to lack of timeand attention.

It makes sense to havethe first semester examswhile the first semester isactually still being taught.

The best option to fixthis problem would be tostart the school year aweek earlier, like inBossier Parish, whosestudents take their examsbefore Christmas break.

Students would comeback from break feelingless lethargic and go intobreak feeling morerelieved. After all, isn’t theSchool Board supposed tomake decisions based onthe students’ bestinterests?

President BarackObama’s new health careplan, which was presentedto Congress on September8, 2009, has been in thepublic eye for quite sometime now. Although somedo not agree entirely, others feel it is time forsome change to takeplace.

There are many newideas being proposed.Under the current healthcare system, numerousAmericans are not able toget proper health care. Some people have beenturned down to get care bytheir insurance companyfor having a pre-existinghealth condition.

The two main goals ofthe new plan includemaking health care moreavailable and lowering thecost so more people canafford doctor visits andother health related needs.

About 60 percent of thecountry gets health care

through their work. Inhopes of broadeningcoverage, Obama’s plansays that large employersthat do not offer some sortof health care coverage forits workers may have topay higher taxes.

To help people who haveto buy insurance on theirown, the plan creates anexchange, a virtualmarketplace whereindividuals and smallbusinesses cancomparison shop. Peoplewill no longer be turneddown by insurancecompanies for pre-existingmedical conditions.

One of the options onthe exchange will be apublic option, run by thegovernment, that offersbasic coverage.

This new plan alsocreates competitionbetween insurancecompanies in order to keepthem in line.

In order to reach outand give more coverage tothe poor, the plan expandseligibility for programs like

Medicaid and the StateChildren’s Health InsuranceProgram.

Under this proposaleveryone will be covered, either through theiremployer or through theexchange. Those who don’tbuy insurance will have topay a penalty on theirtaxes.

To reduce inefficiencyand duplication of services, the government will investin electronic health records,so doctors can see whichtests and procedurespatients have already had.

More scientific researchwill be done to find thetreatments that are mosteffective. The governmenthopes easy-to-accessinformation for doctors, patients and insurancecompanies will reduceprocedures and treatmentsthat do not really work.

The new rulesestablished by the healthcare plan also aim to paydoctors for good patientoutcomes instead of payingthem per procedure.

Wrecking Havoc: The Lucky OneMeghan Zanmiller

October 8, 2005

Katelyn awoke to the sounds of beeping monitors and doctors andnurses in the hallways discussing patient cases, but louder than anythingelse she heard the sound of her father snoring in the armchair to the sideof the bed. She opened her mouth to talk but the words would not comeout. She cleared her throat to try again.

“Dad,” she managed to whisper. Though her dad was usually a heavy sleeper the one word was enough

to wake him. He flew to Katelyn's side and grabbed her hand and took onthe fatherly role. Katelyn looked at him, a blank expression stamped onher face.

“Hey,” her father cooed, “Thank God you’re awake. Do you have anyidea how scared out of our minds we were?”

Katelyn shook her head which was suddenly throbbing in pain. “Katelyn,” he asked, his voice suddenly thickening to a more somber

tone,”Do you remember what happened?” Katelyn closed her eyes trying to shake off the pain in her head. As

soon as her eyelids shut she saw flashes of light and the sound of glassshattering and skidding tires. She opened her eyes with a gasp.

“Where’s Hayden?” She demanded, tears forming in her eyes. She wassuddenly very aware of why she was in the hospital and it scared her.“Where is he, Dad? I need to see him!”

Her dad looked at her, tears in his eyes too. He shook his head asKatelyn had done before.

“He’s gone Katelyn,” and that was enough. Katelyn crumpled intoherself, the pain taking over as she remembered every little detail as theevents of the crash unfolded in her mind. Her dad took her into his armsand she cried into his shirt, drowning the cotton in her tears. Five minuteslater the door opened and her mom entered the room, her eyes red andsmall from crying and lack of sleep. She took her place at Katelyn’s sideand assured her everything would be okay. As she said it however, shewasn’t sure who she was trying to convince. October 10, 2005

After a few tests Katelyn was told she was able to go home. “You’re a lucky girl,” the doctor told her as she was leaving. “Be careful,

okay?” On the way home Katelyn’s parents tried to strike up casual

conversation, but Katelyn wasn’t paying any attention to them and kepther eyes focused on the window and the scenery that was flashing by waytoo fast. Katelyn kept tossing what the doctor had said in her mind. Shethought his word choice was ironic. Who would consider somebody wholost a family member, whose life would never again be the same, lucky?

“So?” her mom asked, “What do you think?”“That sounds good mom,” Katelyn responded completely unenthused

and removed from the situation. After that the car fell silent, which for thefirst time since finding out about Hayden, felt completely normal.

When the Toyota pulled into the driveway her parents were met by Mrs.Connor, their neighbor, who wanted to give her commiseration. Katelynsaid hello solemnly before walking up to the house. Her heart skipped abeat or two as she walked inside. She knew she would have to face herbrother’s absence eventually and felt that instead of baby steps to justleap into it. It was for that reason that Katelyn turned left at the top of thestairs towards Hayden’s newly deserted room instead of to the righttowards her own. She grasped the doorknob, her hands clammy and cold.

She counted to three and when the door popped open she felt more alonethan ever before and lay on the floor in tears. October 11, 2005

Katelyn woke up as a hand brushed through her hair and a kiss wasplanted on her forehead. When she finally opened her eyes she saw hermom sitting on the ground next to her tears streaming down her cheeks. When she realized Katelyn was awake she wiped her eyes. Katelynnoticed the way she was dressed and realized that today was the day ofthe funeral. She got up and walked down the hall to her room and took ashower before getting dressed in a dress her mother had bought while shewas in the hospital.

The Harts arrived at the church first so that as everyone else showedup to offer their condolences they could thank them for coming. At teno’clock the church was filled with numerous family members and friends. The ceremony was closed casket which made Katelyn hope that maybe itwas a mistake, maybe Hayden wasn’t the one they were burying and hewas at home wondering where everyone was. Katelyn knew that this wasimpossible, but she still liked to hope.

After the service everyone drove to the Cemetery for the burial. Aseveryone else left Katelyn had asked to stay back a minute. She wipedthe fallen tears that were growing cold as the wind picked up. She cried asshe said goodbye, then ran down to the car to head back to the home thatwould never feel the same.

Katelyn wasn’t feeling particularly social when they arrived back at thehouse. The mass of people from the funeral arrived to once again offertheir condolences and enjoy the food Mrs. Hart had made. As they walkedin the door, they were greeted by her dad’s boss.

“Lauren, Aaron I am so sorry. If there is anything you need please letme know.”

“May I be excused, please?” Katelyn asked her father. “Yeah, sweetheart, that’s fine.” her father said, hugging her. “Do you

want anything to eat first? Mom made that taco dip you like.” “I’m not really that hungry right now,” she replied, already beginning to

walk away. Instead of going upstairs however, she walked out the frontdoor feeling the need to get some fresh air. She walked down the walkwayand when she got to the driveway she spotted a little brown ball stickingout of the shrub by the garage.

Katelyn walked over and retrieved the football from its hiding spot. Sheturned it in her hands, the ball heavy with memories and tradition. Katelynfelt tears coming but tried to avoid them by turning her face up to the skyand blinking them back. She took a deep breath before walking, ball inhand, back to the house. She ascended the stairs once again turning leftat the top.

As the door opened this time Katelyn could feel her heart race but didn’twant the tears that were urging to break free overcome her. She walkedover to his dresser and placed the ball on top of it. She opened thedrawers and looked at the shirts, taking the one on top. She walked back down the hall, past the stairs, to her room and grabbedher iPod off of her desk. She walked over to the bed and took a pillowcaseoff of one of her pillows, replacing it with her brother’s shirt. Her friendBrittany had done it once when her boyfriend had moved away in order toremember him. Katelyn had laughed at the idea but now was hoping ithelped. As she heard a roar of laughter from downstairs she turned up theiPod volume, the music so loud her ears were beginning to hurt. As she laid her head down on the pillow and tried to catch even theslightest hint of the Axe cologne her brother used to wear she couldn’thelp but mumble, “Lucky me.”

Mass Effect is an FPSRPG (First Person ShooterRole Playing Game)designed by Bioware, thecreators of Bioshock, andStar Wars: Knights of theOld Republic . LikeBioware’s other games,Mass Effect incorporatesskill updates, but alsoincorporates a team of AI(Artificial Intelligence) withexperience points you candesignate to certain skills.

In the beginning of MassEffect you start asCommander Shepard, ahigh ranking officer inEarth’s military. You start bychoosing one of threeclasses: the soldier, theengineer, or the biotic user.Hybrids of each class areavailable. As a soldier you’llbe playing the brute force“shoot first ask questionslater” manly man. Theengineer is speciallydesigned to take out themany robotic adversaries inthe game. Thoughspecifying one type ofenemy seems like a

disadvantage, if you’reagainst biotics you canboost your teams ability totake out other enemies. Finally, the biotic group isbasically a magician.

The game play itself isvery diverse dependingupon which class youchoose and whether or notyou choose good or evil.Certain missions can onlybe done when enoughexperience has beenallocated to good or eviland battle for soldiers vs.engineers or biotics isdifferent.

Your team’s AI in MassEffect is above average.Your team consists ofdifferent people you pick upalong the way, each withhis own specialty. You canhave two team memberswith you at a time. Bychoosing which membersyou bring along, youchoose whether or notyou’re going to have bruteforce, biotic powers, engineers or a mixture.

Mass Effect is in no waya game you can goof off in.You constantly must thinkabout experience allocation,

weapons, weaponupgrades (both for betterweapons and specialbullets that do differenttypes of DOM (damageover time), armor upgradesand then doing all the samethings for your team.

The main objective inMass Effect is a series ofmissions. There are 2 typesof missions: those thatfollow the main story lineand side missions. Themain story takes about 15-20 hours to complete butwith all the side missionsthe full game takes 80-100hours.

Mass Effect can beplayed several times withvarying difficulty and gameplay. The game is notendless but gives youenough options to makeeach separate playingunique. Though at times thegame seems to drag on theoverall pace is good andwill keep your attention.Mass Effect, though notflawless, is an exceptionallygood game and I wouldsuggest it to anyone thathas a bit of time on theirhands and a 360.
