What are Virtual Volumes?

VM consists of LUN(VVOL) on VVOL Datastore.

Datastore = Pool

VMDK = LUN

VM based storage management is possible.

VM consists of files (VMDK Files) on VMFS Datastore.

Datastore = LUN

VMDK != LUN

Advantages of VVOLs

Allocation and consumption of storage is faster with fewer step → less likely to encounter manual errors

Deployment process is well suited to automation

Each VM can be managed individually resulting in more optimization options for performance and protection

Easy scalability through extendibility of existing vvol datastores by adding additional drives/RAID groups

Automated backup/snapshot configurable via vCenter

Advantages of VVOLs

Only VMware administrator’s operations required on management phase.

No storage administrator operations required.

Simplified virtual machine creating operation

① Asking VM’s requirements

② Creating LUNs

③ Setting affinities

Advantages of VVOLs

The policy can manage a combination of QoS & AST feature.

Applying this policy improves I/O performance for each VM.

It reduces performance design and tuning costs.

Technical implementation of VVOL for ETERNUS

Storage Management → ETERNUS SF > 16.2

Storage Cruiser Standard License is required

AST needs Optimization Option

ACM Local Copy License is needed for Clone Backup

QoS Service Option is required for Automated QoS

Communication via VASA Provider

VMware vSphere API for Storage Awareness

Only available for Windows → requires Windows based ESF installation

Information about disc array functions

• Snapshot, replication status, RAID level, thick/thin provisioning

Virtual Machine Management → VMware vSphere > 6.0

Starting from Standard Edition

Essentials Edition is not supported

Technical implementation of VVOL for ETERNUS

VASA Provider provides Protocol Endpoints (PE) to vSphere

PEs are replacing LUNs und mount points

They are handling the administration of paths und policies

Can be connected via FC, iSCSI und NFS

ETERNUS DX only supports FC and iSCSI

All connected host from a cluster can access them simultaneously

The maximum number of virtual machines that could be stored using virtual volumes is limited by the number of supported volumes of the ETERNUS

The number of needed volumes for virtual machines is made up of
