Chapter 3 Notes

P

Note the following issues when connecting the ETERNUS Disk storage system to a server.

3.1 Connection Notes for Windows Server® 2008 R2 and Windows Server® 2008

Before the ETERNUS Disk storage system is connected to a server running Windows Server®2008 R2 or Windows Server® 2008, the ETERNUS Disk storage system firmware should beupgraded to a version that is Windows Server® 2008 R2 or Windows Server® 2008 compatible.Refer to the "Server Support Matrix" for a list of usable ETERNUS Disk storage system firmwareversions.

3.2 Connection Notes for PRIMERGY

3.2.1 Connection Notes

The following operation conditions are recommended to maintain storage system reliability:

• Multiple paths• Use of drivers for ETERNUS Disk storage systems which support path redundancy control

Configure a multipath environment, and select a driver for ETERNUS Disk storage systems which supports path redundancy control to increase redundancy and reliability of the connection between the ETERNUS Disk storage systems and the server.

3.2.2 When Installing Multiple Converged Network Adapter Cards

Only the same type of Converged Network Adapter cards can be installed together. Differenttypes of Converged Network Adapter cards cannot be mixed.

Chapter 3 Notes > 3.3 ETERNUS Disk Storage System Driver Notes

P

3.3 ETERNUS Disk Storage System Driver Notes

When connecting the server to the ETERNUS Disk storage system with multipath configuration, using the path redundancy control (path fail-over) function with a driver for ETERNUS Diskstorage systems, one of the following drivers is required by the server:

For product information, refer to the following URL:http://www.fujitsu.com/global/services/computing/storage/eternus/products/diskstorage/soft-ware/eternusmpd/

When single-path connection is used between the ETERNUS Disk storage system and server,an ETERNUS Disk storage system compatible driver (ETERNUS Multipath Driver) is notrequired.

3.4 Standard Multipath Drivers (msdsm) for Windows Server® 2008 R2 or Windows Server® 2008 Notes

Various settings, such as the load balance policy and retry count, can be adjusted by using thestandard multipath drivers (msdsm) for Windows Server® 2008 R2 or Windows Server® 2008.However the following settings should not be changed from their default values.

3.5 Fibre Channel Switch and CEE/FCoE Switch Notes

• Check the "Server Support Matrix for Windows FCoE connection" and "Server Support Matrix for FC-SWITCH" for which CEE/FCoE switches and Fibre Channel switches are supported by each server OS and ETERNUS Disk storage system model.

• When using a Fibre Channel switch and a CEE/FCoE switch between the server and ETERNUS Disk storage systems, it is necessary to prepare and set the Fibre Channel switch and the CEE/FCoE switch in advance. When using a Fibre Channel switch and a CEE/FCoE switch, be sure to read the "ETERNUS Disk storage systems Server Connection Guide (Fibre Channel) Fibre Channel Switch Settings", "Fabric OS Administrator's Guide", and "Converged Enhanced Ethernet Administrator's Guide".

Chapter 3 Notes > 3.6 Server Startup and Power Supply Control Notes

P

3.6 Server Startup and Power Supply Control Notes

Before turning the server on, check that the ETERNUS Disk storage systems, Fibre Channelswitches, and CEE/FCoE switches are all "Ready". If the server is turned on and they are not"Ready", the server will not be able to recognize the ETERNUS Disk storage systems. Also, when the ETERNUS Disk storage system power supply is being controlled by a connectedserver, make sure that the ETERNUS Disk storage system does not shut down before the con-nected servers. Similarly, the Fibre Channel switches and the CEE/FCoE switches must also beturned off after the connected servers have been shut down.If turned off, data writes from the running server cannot be saved to the ETERNUS Disk storagesystems, and already saved data may also be affected.

3.7 Notes on WWN Instance Management Table for the Server

The WWN instance management table for the server is a worksheet that helps make the processof installing an ETERNUS Disk storage system easy.It is important to save the current environment after first installing the system and also after eachpost-installation system modification, addition, or maintenance operation. Creating a WWNinstance management table for the server makes installation and maintenance of the systemeasy.WWN instance management table templates may be found in the "ETERNUS Disk storage sys-tems Server Connection Guide (FCoE) for WIndows® Driver Settings" for the Converged Net-work Adapter card being used.

3.8 System Design Sheet Notes

The system design sheet is a spreadsheet program work sheet that is used to simplify the pro-cess of installing the ETERNUS Disk storage system. It is important to save the current environment after first installing the system and also after eachpost-installation system modification, addition, or maintenance operation. Creating a systemdesign sheet makes installation and maintenance of the system easy.

9.3 Checking the ETERNUS Disk Storage Systems' Connection Status

The following items can be set and displayed in the "ETERNUS Multipath Manager" main win-dow when "ETERNUS Multipath Driver" is used.

• ETERNUS Disk storage systems' connection status• Connected LUNs• Path status• Path restoration or release

The following are example uses of "ETERNUS Multipath Driver".These describe ETERNUS Disk storage systems' connection status and the checking of paths.

Procedure

1 Start up ETERNUS Disk storage systems (assuming that LUNs are already set up), and check that it is "Ready" before starting up the server.

2 After the server starts up, start up "ETERNUS Multipath Manager".

3 The main window will appear. The status of the ETERNUS Disk storage systems connected to the server (connection status, path status) can be checked.

End of procedure

For details on "ETERNUS Multipath Manager" operations, refer to the manual provided with the"ETERNUS Multipath Driver".

For multipath configuration with Windows Server® 2008 R2 orWindows Server® 2008, each ETERNUS Disk storage system LUNshows as a single "Multi-Path Disk Device".For multipath configuration with Windows Server® 2003 Server, thenumber of LUNs shown will be the same as the number of pathswhich connect to each ETERNUS Disk storage system LUN.
