Hot spots in data protection

IT challenges – what business requirements dictate Enterprise data is one of the most valuable assets in any company. Only an effective data protection strategy can prevent data losses that can threaten the competitiveness or even the very existence of an enterprise.

In almost every company, IT managers are confronted with enormous data growth. On average about 75% of the data in a company is classified as backup data. At the same time, the available backup windows are shrinking, as are IT budgets. To cope with these chal-lenges, IT managers are asking questions, like: Is it possible to replace traditional backup solutions with new replication and snapshot functions, high availability concepts, or just by introducing a disk-only or a deduplication solution?

The answer to this question is clear – such technologies may be good solutions for specific requirements, but they alone will not be able to provide a comprehensive data protection solution which is vital to fulfilling business requirements. High availability does not protect data against corruption, snapshots cover only short time periods, disk-only solutions will not meet budget restraints and deduplication does not offer 24/7 availability.

In addition to burgeoning data and declining IT budgets, there is another challenge to consider, namely the significance data has in specific business processes. Today data requires higher protection levels that only a disaster recovery solution can provide. And some kinds of data require trustworthy long-term storage in order to fulfill compliance regulations.

All these challenges become even more difficult if there is too much complexity in data protection environments.

In the past there was a very easy solution for coping with data growth or limited system performance – a new storage system was simply added to the environment. But can challenges like budget restraints, disaster recovery or trusted long-term storage be met just by adding another storage system? And what can be done about the rapid pace of data growth in today’s backup environments?

A look at how data protection infrastructures are evolving provides some insight. The typical backup environment was relatively simple at first. A backup application was installed, and traditionally this software provided backup copies that were sent to the backup target system in tape format. A tape library was installed to act as the backup target. Then the environment grew. More and more servers created more and more data. Thus more tape libraries and drives had to be installed.

This growth still continues and due to specific requirements, like fast recovery of single files, disks have been integrated as an optional backup storage or staging target. Today disks are very prevalent in backup infrastructures, especially in form of backup appliances. But tape is still often used in larger organizations as well.

The critical point is the limited scalability of capacity and performance as seen in the appliances themselves. Multiple storage systems have to be deployed and appear as individual island solutions. This has a fatal effect on the management of the entire environment, which becomes extremely inflexible and requires manual intervention, not to mention the skyrocketing costs of maintenance.

Complexity increases dramatically if different platforms – like open systems and mainframes – are run together in a data center. A disaster recovery solution typically requires an elaborate setup, whereas traditional concepts do not offer any automatic failover. If there is an outage at one site, manual reconfiguration tasks are necessary – and system administrators do not always have key commands at their fingertips.

All the interdependencies between the backup software and target systems make even a simple change in the environment extremely difficult. For example, in many cases the replacement of an outdated tape library will be anything but easy. And the risk of failures will also increase. Due to this complexity, challenges like data growth, budget constraints and the importance of the IT itself are issues that become even more serious.

Data growth and complexity A simple solution for a complex problem

1. Virtualize target systems The first step to resolve the issues is to virtualize the target systems. The virtualization of the target system must put an end to the interdependencies between the applications and the target systems. This will open the door for the second step, namely consolidation.

2. Consolidate target systems Provide one consolidated storage pool to the applications. Better system utilization will lead to a reduction in the number of storage systems needed.

3. Separate the data management on target systems from the backup software The separation of the data management from the backup software results in less complexity and reduces the loads on net-work resources. The software is only responsible for the process between the server and the virtualized storage pool. It is the task of the virtualization layer to govern the target systems.

4. Automate data availability and disaster recovery The virtualization solution must have automation functions to take care of data availability and disaster recovery.

5. Introduce a future-proof concept The solution has to be future-proof. This can be achieved with a concept that provides the flexibility needed for easy adaptation, e.g. for the constant change of different media and technologies.

Fujitsu ETERNUS CS High End ETERNUS CS High End, the unified data protection appliance from Fujitsu, provides the answers to the challenges in complex backup and archive environments in a most economical way.

Different from other appliances, ETERNUS CS High End does much more than just providing storage capacity. It transforms entire data protection infrastructures into one virtual target system, with unified and standardized management.

The application tasks remain the same, namely to manage the backup and restore process between the production environment and the target systems. However, ETERNUS CS High End acts as the only virtual target system for all the applications and the entire server environment.

Thus it enables the complete consolidation of heterogeneous infra-structures and provides unified management of disk, deduplication disk and tape technologies.

ETERNUS CS High End offers comprehensive high availability and disaster recovery, plus support for 24/7 operations – all of which makes it second to none on the market.

The appliance itself provides market-leading scalability for performance and capacity. What’s more, the virtualization layer adds flexibility to the infrastructure for easy adaptation to future changes.

Proven for 14 years worldwide ETERNUS CS High End has been the first choice to drive efficient data protection since 1999. The Fujitsu appliance is used around the world by the largest data centers in data-intensive segments such as financial services, insurance companies, telecommunications, public administration agencies, industry, and IT service provisioning.

This is due in large part to the unique performance delivered by ETERNUS CS High End, plus the fact that it is a platform designed on the basis of real-world best practices. Its ongoing development has continued for many years in collaboration with a well-established user group. That translates into optimal support from customers and keen awareness of the demands arising from daily system use.

ETERNUS CS High End, the unified data protection applianceETERNUS CS High End is the solution to consolidate complex and heterogeneous data protection environments on a large scale. It is the only solution capable of consolidating backup and archive infra-structures into one system. To provide full consolidation, the unified data protection appliance can connect to all well-known platforms at the front end – including mainframes, together with open systems at the same time. ETERNUS CS High End is the only solution of its kind in the world that can do this.

Similar to the openness at the front end, ETERNUS CS High End supports a wide range of tape libraries and tape drives at the back end to consolidate the target systems. Even if the libraries or the drives are different, the unified data protection appliance can connect them in parallel. Disk libraries and deduplication appliances can also be connected. ETERNUS CS High End thus creates a black box of target systems.

Reasons for having a media mix When optimizing the cost-effectiveness of a storage infrastructure, the focus is not just on the purchase price – other factors such as energy consumption and cooling must also be taken into account, as well as the required floor space. Tape has many advantages in this regard: Once data has arrived on tape it does not consume any energy. It still offers the lowest price per terabyte. Data is safe for 30 years or more. Tape media can be removed from the storage system and locked in a safe, thus supporting vaulting concepts.

However, managing tape can be complex and time-consuming. It is also difficult to manage random access patterns which require a start-stop usage. Additional drives are required for parallel transactions. That is why disk technology is becoming more widespread in data protection environments, but the cost of storage on disks is quite high. Deduplication appliances were introduced in order to reduce the amount of data stored on disk and thereby reduce the cost of disk storage. It is a great enabling technology for replication, as it decreases the required bandwidth. But in upper medium-sized and large enter-prise environments, this technology does have some disadvantages. For example, the deduplication process requires considerable resources and negatively impacts the performance of the appliance. The weak points of deduplication appliances are very evident in mission-critical business environments. Due to the internal reorganization that is required, which may take 24 hours per week, running 24/7 operations is not possible.

Most data protection scenarios today resemble a collection of individual target system islands that have little or no synergies among them. In addition to the reasons for mixing different technologies like tape, disk and deduplication, there is limited capacity or performance scalability in the storage systems, and that results in the formation of islands.

Complete consolidation is only possible with a solution like ETERNUS CS High End that supports a wide range of hardware systems, platforms and backup, not to mention archive applications. This solution can cope with the tremendous load that is created by this kind of consol-idation.

6

How ETERNUS CS High End works For the backup applications the unified data protection appliance appears traditionally as a virtual tape library, for the archive applica-tions as a NAS storage system. At the back end, ETERNUS CS High End is connected with the physical target systems.

The unified data protection platform provides intelligent management of the media mix – known as automated Information Lifecycle Management (ILM). It combines the strengths of disk and tape with rule-based management: The data received from the applications is written to the internal disks of ETERNUS CS High End. This provides the full benefit of disk technology, for example, to provide the highest levels of performance, in optimum cases more than 25,000 MB/s, which is more than 90 TB/h.

Many transactions can be handled in parallel to overcome the limita-tions of tape. Up to 1,280 virtual tape drives are supported. All data received via the VTL interface is automatically compressed before being saved on disk. This reduces the amount of storage space re-quired, without any loss in performance.

As the backup is “just a kind of insurance,” the entire solution should come at the lowest price possible. Data which does not require the highest levels of restore performance can be migrated to an attached target system to relieve the high performance disk storage for business-critical data. The back-end management is transparent for the appli-cations to avoid any interdependencies.

As soon as ETERNUS CS High End receives the data, the job for the application is done and the appliance takes care of further data management. The applications are neither involved in the manage-ment process, nor are they aware of the different target systems at the back end.

Many use cases are possible. The internal disk storage can serve as the final target or the data can be moved to the connected target systems. This enables the flexible use of different media to balance speed, capacity and costs, and this also leverages the benefits of tape.

The complete process is automated by ETERNUS CS High End to keep it simple and efficient. Being able to provide the right media for the right kind of data significantly reduces the cost of data protection and enables long retention periods.

The results ETERNUS CS High End enables enterprises to simplify the structure and the operation of heterogeneous environments and leverages existing systems. It combines the strength of tape and disk technologies in one integrated media stack to not only fulfill defined service levels, but also to reach the lowest price point possible. The result is comprehensive consolidation of target systems.

Without any additional administration effort, ETERNUS CS High End enables reductions in infrastructure costs – while improving the service capabilities and availability of IT environments at the same time.

PreviewWith the next generation of ETERNUS CS High End, optional dedupli-cation technology will be directly integrated in the internal disk storage. Upgrade options for current ETERNUS CS High End appliances will be provided. This will increase the capabilities of the unified data protec-tion appliance in further optimizing the media mix.

Enrich ILM with the SLA dimension Most backup environments today create additional data copies of the backup images, sometimes also referred to as clones, which need to be managed on a backup application level. This can create significant overheads. All data needs to be read and written a second time, thereby requiring significant bandwidth of the backup network.

To avoid this ETERNUS CS High End enriches the ILM process with the SLA dimension, providing different levels of data availability. The application has to send just one data image to ETERNUS CS High End. Based on predefined policies, the unified data protection appliance saves this data image on the internal disk and can create multiple copies, which can be written to local and to remote targets. This pro-vides an easy way to introduce disaster resiliency with a remote copy.

This function is managed automatically. The backup application is no longer involved in the management process of the clones, and the backup network is not burdened with the workload.

Management of the tape infrastructure The management of tape media can be complex and time-consuming. Therefore, ETERNUS CS High End takes over the management of all the target systems and provides a highly available virtualized tape robot. The redundant architecture enables reception of the backup data, even if a component should fail. If the write process to the physical tape fails, then the data will automatically be directed to another target system to ensure that the data is safe.

Step 1: Redirect Step 2: Self-healing

ETERNUS CS High End

Self-healingDue to the defined policies, it can happen that the data is no longer physically available in the disk storage. In such a case ETERNUS CS High End provides the data sourced from the target system at its back end. If the data copy is corrupt or not available for some reason, then the request is automatically redirected to the second copy. Of course, this presupposes that the data was at least written in a dual-copy service level. The copy will be provided and the job for the backup application is done.

Now an automated self-healing mechanism is initiated by ETERNUS CS High End that will recover the failed copy. Thus the level of redundancy is restored. This guarantees the defined service levels with an always available self-healing backup copy.

Tape reorganization One purpose of the reorganization function of ETERNUS CS High End is to effectively utilize the tape capacity available. Furthermore, regular reorganization of tape media (that have not been accessed for a long time) refreshes the magnetization of the tapes and prevents age-related loss of the magnetization.

This can be initiated by the administrator, or be defined as a regularly occurring automatic process. It can automatically make quality checks of duplicate copies. If an error occurs on the tape media, the self-healing functionality recovers the inaccessible information from the other copy. This ensures the availability of data even over the very long-term.

8

Robustness with ETERNUS CS High End A manual setup of disaster recovery scenarios often entails additional costs for the replication software, hardware and a lot of extra effort. ETERNUS CS High End adds robustness and disaster resilience to the data protection environment that simplifies operation by avoiding complex policies and administration tasks.

Remote tape library ETERNUS CS High End can write data to both local and remote tape libraries. This provides an easy way to introduce disaster resiliency with a remote copy on tape.

Asynchronous (cascading) data replication With asynchronous replication of data, one ETERNUS CS High End system writes the data to another system and vice versa. Data pro-tection can be implemented among multiple sites, especially for long-distance replication in the range of thousands of kilometers.

Comprehensive disaster resilience for business continuity

Automatic continuation with split-site configurations The core element of the most disaster resilient architecture is one logical ETERNUS CS High End system which is deployed over two geographically separated sites, the so called “split-site configuration” with cache mirror. The internal infrastructure is thereby extended to a second site which can be 100 km away. The connected applications from the production environment still see one logical setup, without even being aware of the geographical location.

The advantage is obvious: Although distributed across two sites, there is still only one single system. Data can be written to or read from both sites.

In case of a failure at one site, i.e. in a disaster scenario, traditional systems require a classical failover which is difficult to set up. Even more difficult and very error-prone are the manual actions which have to be taken in stress situations when disaster strikes. The split-site configuration of ETERNUS CS High End provides the solution. If one site goes down, the workload is automatically routed to the other site. The applications are not aware of this process. The second site even gets the same IP address as the former active site. Backup processes continue as before, without requiring any action from the IT team. We call this automated continuation.

This dramatically increases the availability of data and thereby secures business processes – while also reducing administration costs. This ETERNUS CS High End architecture represents the best in disaster protection for all mission-critical data, and can even cope with worst–case scenarios such as complete on-site outages.

9

Backup vs. archive The basic idea of a backup is to create copies of the original data from the production systems. The only reason for making a backup is to be able to recover data when necessary. Typically many versions will be stored. The retention time for each copy is in the range of several weeks.

The big difference of the archive is that no copies are created – instead, the original data which is stored on the production system is moved to a separate storage infrastructure, i.e. the archive target. Generally there is only the one version of the data, the final one, which is stored in the archive. The intention is also different from that of the backup: The archive must preserve information for a dedicated retention period which may often be years or even decades.

Whereas backup is about making copies of data for a short-term period in order to enable quick recovery if data is lost, archiving is about the trusted long-term conservation of original data.

ETERNUS CS High End integrates the archive To provide a revolutionary solution to easily bring archive infrastruc-tures to the next level and dramatically reduce costs, ETERNUS CS High End can be enhanced for archive purposes. For the first time, backup and archive infrastructures can be consolidated.

Best archiving support With the ViNS (Virtual Network Storage) functionality, ETERNUS CS High End provides standard NAS interfaces for archiving purposes. It supports up to two billion files and can serve as an archive target as well as a secondary storage target to reduce loads on the production storage systems. The internal disk storage basically acts as the final target for the data.

Furthermore, the direct integration with tape enhances the unified data protection appliance for Hierarchical Storage Management to automatically save data on disk and tape, according to defined migration policies and retention periods.

Archives need to be protected because the data moved from the productive environment to an archive target is no longer in the backup process, which typically embraces the productive systems only. Therefore, with ETERNUS CS High End, tape copies, a cache mirror with a split-system, as well as asynchronous replication for disaster protection of the archive, are supported to safeguard the archive against data loss.

Enable legally compliant archivingLegal directives call for solid strategies that must be followed to prevent data loss that could eventually result in serious penalties. And the evidentiary value of data has to be maintained for many years.

ETERNUS CS High End ensures that the files are stored in a secure way, making them revision-proof for a defined retention period to fulfill specific requirements like compliance regulations. This is possible with the integrated WORM functionality. ETERNUS CS High End enforces the WORM protection, as well as the retention period, based on the parameters provided by the archive software.

KPMG AG has confirmed that ETERNUS CS High End enables storage and retrieval of electronic documents based on the Generally Accepted German Accounting Principles.

Better backup operations and production systemsIf data, which is inactive or less important for business processes, is moved from the production storage to an archive, this will free up a lot of production storage capacity. Furthermore, the amount of backup data will be reduced dramatically. In addition to better utilization of storage space, faster backups and a faster recovery process will be possible.

10

Flexibility to adapt to individual requirementsTo provide a made-to-measure solution that satisfies individual requirements, the modular ETERNUS CS High End grid architecture differs from other data protection solutions due to its outstanding flexibility and scalability.

It allows for seamless increases in capacity and performance. An initial project can be started with a very small configuration which can grow step-by-step. At the heart of the system is a scalable disk cache, with an internal disk capacity ranging from 5 terabytes up to 3.6 petabytes. Several tape libraries can be consolidated at the back end to manage data volumes in the exabyte range. For backup processes a maximum of three million virtual tape drives and, for archive usage a maximum of two billion files, are supported.

Independent of capacity, the performance of ETERNUS CS High End is extremely scalable. Individual front-end and back-end processor nodes can be added to avoid bottlenecks in the transfer of data between servers and ETERNUS CS High End, and from there to the target system.

ETERNUS CS High End is the largest scale-out data protection appliance on the market with up to 22 processor nodes and 16 storage nodes. All processor nodes and storage nodes are connected via a redundant high-speed internal SAN. It enables all components to share the data. For example, this provides a great way to increase performance, without having to add unnecessary capacity or even a complete new system.

Flexible SLA – the third dimension of scalability Furthermore, ETERNUS CS High End adds a third dimension to scalabili-ty, i.e. the availability level of the data, to provide flexible SLAs. Data can be categorized according to the application from which it comes. It can be written to a clearly defined target, and the unified data protection appliance automatically manages the data. There is the option of deciding when to use disks, tape or even a mix of both in order to keep the performance in balance with the media cost.

This can be combined with comprehensive high-availability and disaster recovery capabilities. Data can be mirrored between two sites, replicated over very long distances and saved as multiple copies. There is almost zero management effort after setup, and yet different service levels for different applications will be supported – at the lowest possible cost per service.

Flexibility and investment protection for the data center ETERNUS CS High End decouples target systems from the backup and archive applications. Therefore, it is very easy to make changes in the target infrastructure – for example to introduce a new generation of tape library. No changes are necessary in the backup or archive process because the application is not aware of the modification. ETERNUS CS High End also takes care of data migration, for example, from the old tape library to the new one. Changes in the infrastructure can be made quite easily.

ETERNUS CS High End adds flexibility to data protection landscapes. It enables the reshaping of complete data protection environments. Enterprises are not “locked” in a specific or complex environment, and they can easily adapt to future requirements and benefit from long-term value.

Reliable service for solution availabilityThe ETERNUS CS High End SolutionContract provides proactive and reactive maintenance and support services according to customer’s needs. The proative service elements enable the early identification of critical system conditions and the initiation of preventive measures, for example a System Health Check to ensure sustaining the required performance and high availability of the solution infrastructure. A dedicated Technical Account Manager is responsible to ensure sustained service quality.

Flexibility and scalabilityJust pay for what you need

“ Fujitsu’s ETERNUS CS High End offers enterprise customers some highly beneficial features in data protection. The unified secondary data management platform across open and mainframe networks, backup and archive functions, and the simultaneous and auto-mated support for disk and tape media are highly differentiated against the competition, most of which offer a set of different products to address all these needs. Moreover, not only can it take over the management of data protection and centralize disaster recovery, but it also allows customers to keep using any of their existing disk and tape systems, as ETERNUS CS High End can act as a front end for those secondary storage systems. Invest-ments in PBBAs or tape libraries are protected and the return improved. IDC believes that the combination of these features and benefits is unique.”

Efficient data protection to improve theeconomics of your storage operations

Virtualize target systems ETERNUS CS High End is a really unique concept on the market. It virtualizes all target systems creating one logical data protection platform. It functions as the single virtual target system for the whole environment. As soon as ETERNUS CS High End receives the data, the job for the application is done. This disbands the interdependencies of applications and target systems.

Consolidate target systems The applications only see ETERNUS CS High End as their target. Thus the physical storage infrastructure is transformed into a black box. It allows for a radical consolidation of storage systems, even in heterogeneous environments. The unified data protection appliance consolidates backup and archiving infrastructures from open systems and mainframes, and copes with data volumes well into the exabyte range.

Separate the data management on target systems from the backup software An automated ILM combines the strengths of disk and tape with the rule-based management of various technologies like disk, deduplication and tape. This provides the full benefit of maximum disk performance and leverages the cost- effectiveness of tape media.

Automate data availability and disaster recovery ETERNUS CS High End offers comprehensive high availability and disaster recovery capabilities, even providing 24/7 operations, which makes it second to none on the market. Automated functions take care of multiple copies and also ensure the fulfillment of service levels.

Introduce a future-proof concept ETERNUS CS High End itself comes with remarkable flexibility and scalability. It also makes the infrastructure more flexible. The virtualization layer allows for easy changing of target systems. Automatic data migration enables the migration of data without interrupting operations, for example, when a library is replaced by newer model.
