I have heard over the years that all preachers want to talk about is “money.” The truth is... most all preachers and pastors I know would rather preach about anything else than giving. This is somewhat ironic and unfaithful on our part because Jesus spoke more about money than he did prayer. In fact, of the 40 recorded parables of Jesus nearly half spoke in some way about stewardship of resources. So why is money so important? (Do I really need to answer this?) How we spend our money gives an indication to the priorities we have made, even if we have not consciously made those value decisions. How many of us drive an older car or stay in a smaller house because we have chosen to send our children to a private school? How many of us have packed our lunches, instead of eating out when we are saving for that down payment on the first house. How many of us as parents wear last year’s and for that matter a decade ago’s fashions, so our children might play soccer or take dance lessons? We make value judgments everyday in regard to our finances. How we use our money indicates our priorities. This is why tithing and giving to the church is so important as followers of Jesus. I want to share why Robin and I give to the work of our church. When we tithe and give we are saying “we are not controlled by money.” Jesus said you cannot serve both God and money.” When we freely and joyfully give our income to the work of the church we are proclaiming consistently that we will not be ruled by money. We serve God first and foremost. Giving also reminds us that all we have is from God. Although the Bible instructs us to tithe or give to the church 10% of our income, this act only reminds us that all we have actually belongs to God and should ultimately for God’s use. Giving also allows us to practice putting others before ourselves. When we freely give to the church and allow the church to determine how it will be spent, we are giving up our preferences and desires to the greater good of the congregation. This is a way of assuming the role of a servant. When we freely give and make no demands in return, we learn humility and trust. In this simple way we release our will to the greater will of the church and ultimately to God. This past Sunday was a great example of why Robin and I freely and joyfully give to our church. As we watched 26 first graders receive a Bible from the church, I knew that I was a part of purchasing those Bibles for these children. This brought me joy. When I listened to our magnificent choir sing in praise to God “Fairest Lord Jesus ruler of all nature” I knew

This coming Sunday, I will be sharing with you about the joy of giving. that what I had given had purchased music, provided the instruments and the salaries to those who lead and accompany these talented singers. When six individuals joined our congregation at the end of the service, I knew that my giving had made a difference. One of those who joined was a freshman in high school and when I asked her why she was ready to make her professions of faith, she said that the recent student retreat ended with the question of “what was going to be your next step?” She said she knew at the moment it was time for her to profess Christ and be baptized. I joyfully knew that my giving had helped to pay for that retreat and the ongoing ministry to our students. As I passed the bulletin board in the Narthex, I was reminded of our Disaster Relief ministry that is preparing to go and help those in South Carolina. These are but a few examples of the joy Robin and I receive on a weekly basis when we give to our church’s ministry out of obedience to God.

I hope you are experiencing the same joy that I am when it comes to giving. You and I can be a part of something much more important than ourselves when we give to our church’s work. We can join others in truly making an eternal significance. How does your giving or not giving reflect your priorities? I invite you to discover the freedom and joy that comes from giving.

Did You Know… Trinity spends around $55,000 per year to insure the physical building, contents, vehicles, and various liability policies. This serves to protect us in the event of natural disasters or other damages.

The Stewardship Committee wanted to call your attention to this as part of our initiative to keep members informed about how our monetary gifts are used.

Be a part of Trinity’s traditional Hanging of the Greens by purchasing a beautiful poinsettia from one of our Flower Committee members, who are now selling poinsettias for $10 in honor of a special family member or loved one that you would like to remember. Purchases can be made each Sunday, thru November 11 in the Narthex. Each poinsettia purchased for a memorial or will be recognized in a special holiday bulletin.

Trinity Baptist believes that children are a gift from God. We rejoice when a new child enters a family. It is a holy and exciting moment in any young family’s life. In these joyful times, we want to acknowledge support and allow a family to express appreciation to God and help them seek the spiritual guidance they need to raise their children.

Twice a year we offer a service for families to dedicate their newest born. Child Dedication is a public commitment a family makes

before God and their church and their family. The dedication service provides the parent(s) opportunity to express publically their desire to lead and spiritually nurture their child in cooperation with the Holy Spirit, so their child will develop a desire to love God and love others.

This service also reminds a congregation of their responsibility to families by providing ways to help and encourage the parents as together we provide avenues for the child’s spiritual development. We must never forget our covenant as a church to undergird and support fellow members. This includes sharing in the faith development of our young. Join us on November 22 for this time of commitment and covenanting together in the body of Christ.

The graded children’s choirs did a fine job singing in the worship services this past Sunday morning. The children have prepared since September to sing in worship as well as rehearse for Hanging of the Greens and their Christmas music later in the season. I referred to them as “worship leaders” Sunday morning after they sang. It is really important that they learn this concept in the early years of choir ministry because whenever we step up into a worship role, we become prompters to those who come to be inspired. Our children, through the years of choir ministry, will hear this concept in each choir division at Trinity. When you speak to them, thank them for their worship leadership. The music is one thing, but the more we reinforce their leadership, we begin a journey for them that what they do really matters in the kingdom of God.

Joy Earp, our program director, will prepare them for this service. It is important that your child be present. There is no other rehearsal for this event, and there is not time on the day of the service to teach students who’ve missed the dress rehearsal. Please protect this date and contact your director immediately if your child will not be participating.
