Kabelo Sebolai had an article published in the journal, Language Matters, in May of this year. The
title is: Distinguishing between English proficiency and academic literacy in English and it appears in
volume 47, issue 1 of the journal.

Media and Communications An email was sent out to more than 3000 high schools in February this year,
alerting educators to the upcoming cycle of NBTs. Two follow-up emails have
since been sent, one informing them about an article directed at educators
and published on Stoogle, and another to clarify our position on NBT prepa-
ration classes and materials.
As part of our strategy to also reach schools that do not have access to
email or the internet, over 450 Zulu NBT brochures were distributed to
Quintile 1 and 2 schools in KwaZulu-Natal.
As part of a Department of Higher Education and
Training initiative, we were invited to participate in
interviews about the NBT on SABC radio. Janine Dun-
lop was interviewed by Lesedi FM on the 28th of April at 16h15.
On the 19th July, CETAP held a collaborative Teaching and Learning Workshop for the Department of Applied Science at the CPUT Wellington campus. The workshop focussed on the Agricultural Science Programme at CPUT but dealt with many issues that are generic to the Applied Science Department. It was hugely successful and sparked some lively debate around how the NBT testing of the student intake provided invaluable information, allowing appropriate and targeted responses in terms of addi-tional academic support and placement of students in Extended Curriculum programmes. The workshop served to address some of the challenges faced by CPUT which were highlighted by the analysis pre-sented by Robert Prince and Kabelo Sebolai. The success of the workshop served to reinvigorate CPUT’s use of the NBT and further cemented the close relationship between our two Universities. Naziema Jappie presented a paper at the International Testing Commission Conference in Vancouver, Canada:
The conference was attended by delegates from all over the world, giving insights and best practices about assess-
ments and testing in their country. There were informative sessions on the advancement of psychometric modelling,
technological developments and testing for employment and credentialing.

Naziema Jappie and Emlyn Balarin recently completed a successful visit to the University of Venda to discuss the future use of the NBT for admissions and placement.
They had a very productive meeting with the UniVen Registrar, Prof. Edward Nesamvuni and his team, which had the outcome of CETAP being invited to participate in a review workshop on their Admis-sions and Placement Policy. This should pave the way for CETAP to introduce a pilot programme demonstrating the utility of NBT testing for first time applicants to UniVen and hopefully lead to a more comprehensive use of NBTs in the future at the university.
Naziema Jappie recently visited Education Testing Services (ETS) in Princeton. New Jersey,
USA:
“ETS is a non-profit organization employing approximately 4000 workers across the United
States. It provides assessments worldwide, from kindergarten to Higher Education, based on
rigorous research. In addition to assessments, they have customized training at the ETS
Global Institute for test developers, research personnel, managers, psychometricians and
many others. I was very impressed with the level and standards of the training sessions:
quite intense and interactive. “
