    Description

    The Delphi Ammonia Sensor uses aunique Delphi technology to directlymeasure ammonia levels in the exhaustof diesel vehicles equipped with aselective catalytic reduction (SCR)aftertreatment system. The sensoroutput can be used to provide feedbackto the SCR system helpingprovide optimal reduction of NOxemissions.

    In a diesel engine SCR system, theammonia sensor is typically situatedbehind the SCR catalyst. The SCR systemhelps reduce NOx emissions in dieselpowertrain systems through a chemical

    reaction in which ammonia reacts withNOx to produce nitrogen and water.Ammonia is typically introduced into the exhaust stream upstream from the SCR in theform of liquid urea. The ammonia sensor detects excess ammonia in the exhaust gasallowing for more precise dosing of urea. This added precision allows for optimal SCRsystem efficiency and prevents the release of excess ammonia into the atmosphere.

    The Delphi Ammonia Sensor can detect ammonia within a range of 0 to 100 ppm. Ifthe sensor detects too much ammonia, it signals the system to reduce the amount ofthe urea injection. The planar alumina substrate in the Delphi Ammonia Sensorcombines an integral temperature sensor with a thick-film heater for optimumperformance. The Delphi Ammonia Sensor provides measurement of ammonia withoutinterference from carbon monoxide and NOx.

    Typical Applications

    The Delphi Ammonia Sensor is intended for use in vehicles equipped with an SCRconverter system including light-duty, medium-duty and heavy-duty diesel vehicles tohelp manufacturers meet increasingly stringent NOx emissions regulations.

    Availability

    The Delphi Ammonia Sensor is currently in development and targeted for production in2010. Engineering samples available upon request. Contact Delphi for further information.
