Support Headquarters

As your chapter collects dues this fall, please consider collecting and contributing $2 or $3 per member for Headquarters.

Eta State Headquarters, centrally located in Asheboro, houses official documents for our state organi-zation, provides a place for meetings of chapters and committees, and provides limited lodging for members who are at-tending official business there.

Chapters are asked to support Head-quarters with a $2 contribution per member. The donation helps meet basic expenses of maintaining Head-quarters but does not cover all the costs each year.

Send donations to Eta State Treasurer Ruth Jones at 3607 Wyneston Road, Greenville, NC 27858 and denote Headquarters on the check.

Treasurer’s Reports Due Nov. 10

Fall chapter meetings are in full swing and dues are being collected, which results in retaining or reinstating members. Please work with your chapter treasurer to get dues paid by the end of October. The membership forms 18 (report of dues and fees) and 18A (report of members dropped), plus the dues check, are due to Eta State Treasurer Ruth Jones by November 10. Eta State EEC Project

Wonders of Water

Have you bought your LifeStraw? (http://lifestraw.com/) Have you watched the “Follow the Liters” video on the Lifestraw organization website? (http://lifestraw.com/follow-the-liters/) Have you visited the CTAUN (Committee on Teaching About the United Nations) link on the DKG/UN Relation-ship site on the DKG International website? (http://www.teachun.org/) Have you tried a tip from the “water use it wisely” website? (http://wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/)

EEC would love to see how chapters and members are acting on the Eta State Wellness Initiative: EEC Project - Wonders of Water. Share with the EEC Chair Dr. Teresa H. Cowan at [email protected] the ways in which your chapter and/or members are venturing into areas of leadership, growing personally and professionally, and being global through local actions (EEC goals for 2017-2018) in an effort to promote wellness.

Tips to promote Eta State EEC Project - Wonders of Water: • Look to save energy and water in your own home or

business and share with others • Check your electric water heater: it is the second-largest

energy expense in your home. Therefore, saving water means saving energy and $$$$. Visit https://www.duke-energy.com/home/products/save-water See if you qualify for a free “Save Energy and Water

Kit” Install the FREE items and start saving water, energy

and $$$ Hints to Editors: Each month, EEC will share items about the Water Project. Please share these in your newsletters to keep your members informed about the state project—and about saving water.

Dropped Members

Presidents Take Note: Remember that if mem-bers are dropped from your chapter, those names should be a part of the chapter minutes or the chapter executive board minutes. Please share this information with your treasurer and work

with her to know which members have paid their dues and who might need encouragement to retain them.

Eta State Vision: “Voices of Influence Empowering NC Women Educators”

Homework Assignment from the

ELP Committee By: Susan Phipps, Chair, Educational Law & Policy Committee

All chapter presidents are urged to set up the groundwork for instant action by members when the NC Legislature goes back into session next May and important education-related issues are being considered during the “short session” of the General Assembly. To prepare, all members are encouraged to make use of the time lawmakers are back home in their districts between now and May to build relationships with them. Inspire chapter members to meet with Senators and Representatives to discuss school issues such as testing, class size, vouchers, educator salaries and benefits, per pupil funding, teacher shortages, equal accountability for any and all schools that receive taxpayer dollars, etc.

The other action chapter presidents need to take at this time is to make sure the chapter has sent in the name, non-school email address, and phone number of a Chapter Legislative Contact person to ELP Chair Susan Phipps at phippss@

charter.net. From time to time the committee will contact these Chapter Legislative Contacts when important educational issues are in the news.

Thank you, Chapter Presidents, for making these preparations now so we will be ready next spring, no matter what Raleigh has in store for us!

Constitution? Bylaws? Rules?

Do the terms Constitution, Bylaws and Rules confuse you? Do you know when it is possible to amend or make incremental changes to these governing documents?

The Constitution is one of DKG’s governing documents at the International level. The Constitution is subject to proposals to amend every four years— in even-numbered years. The North Carolina state organization governing documents are aligned with the Constitution. Eta State Bylaws are open to amendment every two years— in odd-numbered years. At the chapter level in DKG, the governing document for the chapter is referred to as “Rules.” Within its chapter rules, each DKG chapter identi-fies the amendment process and how often proposals to amend are possible.

Standing Rules are also governing documents at the internation-al and state organization levels; these provide details for carry-ing out the mandates of the Constitution and state organization bylaws. The International Standing Rules are open to amend-ment every two years—at each International convention. At the North Carolina state organization level, the Standing Rules are open for amendment each year at convention.

Now is the time for proposals to amend the Eta State Standing Rules. The form for submitting proposed amendments is online at http://www.ncdkg.org/uploads/8/0/8/5/80859646/2018 form_proposed_sr_ changes.pdf. The form should be submitted to Rules Committee Chair Tammy Collum by December 15, 2017 at [email protected].

Hints to Editors: Members might appreciate the reminder of the levels of our governing documents, especially since we are asking for proposals for our state Standing Rules.

Use the Recruitment Ideas Online

Mary Beth Dailey, Membership Committee Chair, reminds chapters to use the recruitment information under the Resources tab (must be logged in) on the DKG Interna-tional website for ideas to grow and retain members.

The recruitment information includes a sample recruit-ment card and letter plus a detailed step by step plan. Remember a former member can reinstate with no vote and no extra fee.

There is honor in being a DKG sister.

Let’s Sparkle! One of my goals this year is to encourage savvy leadership. What does it mean to be a “savvy leader?” According to Google Dictionary, it is someone who is knowledgeable as well as someone who has common sense and has the ability to make good judgments. As we approach the 2017-2019 biennium where nominating committees across North Carolina will be seeking officers, I am certain they can identify many “savvy leaders” within their chapters. After all, DKG members are “key women educators” who were invited because of their leadership potential.

The challenge for each nominating committee is to encourage its members to believe they are not only worthy, but capable of holding positions requested. Eta State provides many opportunities for members to develop their leadership potential and it is my hope that every position is filled; that everyone who accepts will be supported and nurtured, and that each one will lead with confidence. Yes, my goal this year is to encourage savvy leadership and YOU are invited to

Sparkle along with me to make this happen!

Connie Connie Phifer Savell

Eta State NC President 2017-2019
