Did You Know:

*The St Thomas Episcopal Church Endowment Fund Trust was established in 2011 to further the missions and ministries of the church. It is an exempt organization under IRS Section 501(c) (3) and classified as a publically supported charity. It is a perfect vehicle through which members (and others) may provide long term, lasting contributions, legacies, bequests etc. that will benefit St Thomas for the long term. Endowment Trustees are Dick Haar, Ray Bergin and myself. We would be happy to discuss any questions, possibilities, or opportunities for participating in the activities of the endowment.

Rector’s Column — by Diane+ I want to use my column in this edition to update everyone as to what is happening in the diocese regarding the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. Many of you have expressed the desire to help those who were affected. How is St. Thomas helping the residents of North Carolina is the question I hear. At October’s Diocesan Executive Council Meeting it was discussed in depth what has been done and what still needs to be done in regard to aid and rebuilding. We were reminded by Canon Sonny Browne, the Lumberton area was still recovering from Matthew when Florence hit in September. It takes, as we have learned, years for an area to rebuild homes and businesses; we are no different. As some of you may know, the Outreach Committee set aside $5000 for disaster relief which is currently in the Endowment. The question I am asked is what in particular are we going to do about our funds? What I learned is the diocese is still working with area church’s to assess damage to property. At the

present time, everything is on hold while insurance claims are filed and funds received. The monies we have set aside to help others are for now not needed. The suggestion is to keep our funds available for when and if we are called upon to help. What also became apparent to each of us on Executive Council is hurricanes affecting the coastal regions of North Carolina are going to be a regular occurrence and it is vital we maintain disaster funds for years to come. It is heartening to hear from so many who want to assist others in this natural disaster. But recovery as we well know takes years. We may be called upon at some future date to help those who are unable to fund repairs for buildings, until then our monies are best kept in the endowment. It was said the crisis is over, now comes the long slow process of rebuilding. St. Thomas’ vestry is committed to spending the money set aside wisely. We stand ready to assist. Thank you to all who are committed to helping our neighbors in need. Diane+

Tuesday Book Study

Begins November 13th at 3:30 pm in Diane’s office. Former President Carter presents ideas about faith through a multifaceted lens with the hope of leading all readers into a better awareness of God. Can the God of Abraham can be the God not only of Christians and Jews but perhaps all religions espousing a belief in one God? Carter does not go that far but he does compare and contrast the three main religions affecting the lives of four billion people on our planet. While weaving quotes of other biblical scholars into a tapestry of his faith, Carter reminds Americans old and young of where he has been, who influenced him along his journeys and how he wound up teaching Sunday school in a town of 700 people. amazon.com

Christmas Outreach Initiatives

2018 Christmas Angel Tree Again this year our “Christmas Angel” event will address an important unmet need among adults in Beaufort County who have either mental or physical disabilities and who have no one who is able or willing to support them. The Department of Social Services has provided a list of 36 adults ranging in age from 21 to 94 along with their Christmas wish list.

St. Thomas' Christmas tree with “Angels” will be in the Noe Building by November 17th. Most of their wishes are quite small so some St. Thomas families may choose to take more than one angel. To protect their privacy, there will not be a name on the Angel tag, only the recipient’s initials, gender and age. Gifts do not need to be wrapped. Just place them in a bag (does not need to be Christmas) with initials clearly marked on the bag. The deadline for leaving bags with gifts in the Noe Building is December 6th.

Through this outreach we will be able to make a big difference for each one of our “Angels” on Christmas Day and beyond.

If you would like to ring bells for the Salvation Army, please sign up in the Noe Building.
