ESTIMATION OF HEMOGLOBIN CONCENTRATIONBy: khulood Hussein
• Hemoglobin (HB) is the conjugated protein present in red blood cells. It gives the blood its characteristic red color.
• The main function of hemoglobin is gas transport from the tissue to the lung and visa versa.
NORMAL LEVEL
• average range is:•Adult Female 12-16 Gram/dL.•Adult male 14-18. Gram/dL.
SAHLI’S hemoglobinometer
Materials
• Sahli’s hemoglobinometer.• HCL.• Distilled water.• Dropper.• Stirrer.• Equipment for sterile finger prick.
• Hemoglobin is converted to acid hematin by the action of HCL. The acid hematin solution is further diluted until its color matches exactly with the standard of the comparator block, the hemoglobin concentration is read directly from the calibration tube.
Low HB concentration
• Pregnancy• Anemia• Women• Children
High HB concentration
• Polycythemia• Hypoxia• Hemoconcentration• Infants &newborns
