Attendance/Participation Students are expected to have completed all assigned activities prior to class so they are prepared to participate in in-class activities and discussions. Students are allowed to miss a maximum of three (3) EMS2601C class. Students are allowed a maximum total of three (3) tardies to/early departures from all EMS 2601C classes. Additional information about attendance requirements is included in the Syllabus Supplement. Students exceeding the maximum allowances will be withdrawn from the program. Students missing any portion of class are responsible for any information, material, or assignments covered during that time and must work with a fellow group/squad/class member to obtain that information. Students/groups/squads may be required to attend additional open labs if the instructors feel the students/groups/squads need additional practice. Skill/Scenario Signoffs & Validations The Lead Instructor and/or Lab Facilitators will provide deadlines for skill/scenario signoffs. Students are expected to work together as much as possible to progress through the skills and scenarios. Specific lab sessions will be designated as Skills Validation days during which skill/scenario lab exams will be conducted. To be eligible for lab exams, all skills signoffs related to the respective exam must be completed. Any failed exam must be passed before the scheduled final psychomotor lab exam. Examination Guidelines To be eligible to take cognitive unit exams, students may be required to complete preparatory assignments. Failure to complete the preparatory assignment will limit students to a maximum of half credit for the exam. Cognitive examinations will be graded as pass/fail based on pre-established national cut scores. Students passing the exam on the initial attempt will earn five (5) points toward their overall course grade. Any student that fails an exam may retake the exam. Retakes will generally be available in the IRSC Assessment Centers for a period of one week starting one week after the original exam date (i.e., the retake will be available Monday through Friday the following week). Students passing the exam on the retake will earn half credit for the exam. Additional remedial/review work may be required prior to retaking the exam. Students must attend all scheduled exams. Unless the instructor is notified BEFORE the exam date and grants an opportunity for the student to take the exam at a different time, missing an exam will be considered an initial attempt failure and limit students to a maximum of half credit for the exam. The instructor is not required to grant a different testing opportunity.

In-Class Quizzes In-class quizzes, based on all course material including reading assignments, may occur with or without notice. Missed in-class quizzes (for any reason) will result in a score of 0 for the missed quiz no matter the reason for absence. No quiz makeups are provided. Assignments Most assignments will be completed in the Blackboard, Navigate 2, McGraw-Hill Connect, or LC-Ready systems. Each assignment will have a designated location for submission. All assignments will have due dates, and unless otherwise announced, will be considered due 1 hour before the start of class on the due date. Students are responsible for all material and assignments. Students missing class must contact a fellow class member for any missed information. Unless the instructor is notified BEFORE the assignment is due and due to extreme circumstances provides an opportunity for the student to submit his/her assignment late, late assignments will result in a grade of 0. Avoid waiting until the last minute to complete assignments to allow adequate time in case of any issues with technology resources. Fisdap Entries All lab shift skills signoffs and validations must be logged into Fisdap and confirmed by a lab facilitator prior to leaving the lab shift, unless otherwise directed by the Lead Instructor or Lead Lab Facilitator. Scenario entries in Fisdap must be completed within 72 hours of the end of the lab session or sooner if specified by the Lead Instructor or Lab Facilitator. When completed, lock the lab shift. Any skills not documented in Fisdap as noted here will not be counted as completed. EVERY skill and scenario attempt must be logged, including failed attempts. Not listing failed attempts will be grounds for the student to be placed on academic probation which can ultimately lead to program dismissal. Minimums listed in the system are minimum successful attempts so that means you will likely need to enter more attempts than the minimum. If there are no failed attempts as you’re learning a skill, the validity of your peer reviews may be questioned and you may be assigned additional lab shifts/skills/scenarios as well as a research paper on the science behind skill acquisition. Grades Official course grades will be posted in Blackboard. Students should check their grade on a regular basis. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all grades are properly recorded in the Blackboard gradebook. Past students have had occasional issues with

EMS2601C 20191 2018-08-16

8

Navigate 2 or Connect assignment grades not posting properly in the Navigate 2 and Connect gradebooks, respectively, which will be transferred to Blackboard. If this occurs, it is the student’s responsibility to bring proof of a grade and on-time completion to the lead instructor. Subject to Change Notice All material, assignments, and deadlines are subject to change with prior notice. It is your responsibility to stay in touch with your instructor, review the course site regularly, and communicate with other students to adjust as needed if there is any change in the course.

Writing Expectations All students should write at college level in all course discussions and assignments. Citation and Reference Style Students should use the APA citation style unless otherwise directed by their instructor.

Course Specific Technology Requirements Both academia and the EMS industry have become more reliant on technology, and the EMS Program has been progressively integrating more technology into its courses. The EMS Program requires all students to access online resources including instructor resources on Blackboard; publisher resources on Navigate 2; review and study materials on LC-Ready; classroom testing and lab, clinical, and field scheduling and skills tracking on Fisdap; email on Office 365; and classroom attendance tracking on AccuClass. Additionally, students may use Office 365 for writing assignments and other work within their courses. All students are required to possess an iPad and are required to bring the iPad with them to all lecture, lab, clinical, and field class sessions, including the first day on August 21, 2017. The college does not have any devices available for student use during class sessions, and failure to have a device on a given day may result in consequences such as grades of 0 on work completed in class or the inability to get skills signed off in the lab. The table below lists the minimum and recommended specifications for the device:

Minimum Recommended iOS 9.3^ iOS 10.x^ 7.9” Display 9.7” Display 32 GB Capacity Wi-Fi 802.11g/n Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Working Camera 8-Hour Battery 9-10 Hour Battery Bluetooth Keyboard (Pro: Smart Keyboard) Stylus (Pro: Pencil) Cellular Service Option Protective Case

syllabus to any of the apps may require a higher minimum iOS version so students are recommended to use the most current version of iOS available.) Students should download and install the following apps from the Apple App Store in advance of class:

AccuClass (Engineerica Systems) Adobe Acrobat Reader Bb Student by Blackboard Blackboard Collaborate™ Mobile Chrome (Google) Echo360 Epocrates Reference Tools for Healthcare Providers Fisdap (Headwaters Software) LC-Ready (Limmer Creative) McGraw-Hill SmartBook Microsoft Excel# Microsoft OneDrive# Microsoft OneNote# Microsoft Outlook# Microsoft PowerPoint# Microsoft Word# Navigate eReader (Informed Publishing) (NOTE: Not 2.0) Office Lens# (Microsoft)

(#Subscription access to these apps should be available as an included part of the student’s IRSC Microsoft Office 365 account.) Other apps that are not required but that students may find useful include:

Dropbox Evernote Google Docs Google Drive One Drive

Students may choose to also bring a laptop, but a laptop may not take the place of having the iPad available. To ensure the greatest compatibility with Program systems, the recommended minimum notebook (PC or Mac) specifications include: Wi-Fi connectivity, Display of at least 1024x768 or greater, 1 GHz or faster processor, 2 GB RAM (4 GB or greater recommended), 20 GB free hard drive space, Battery life of at least 4 hours (students should ensure batteries are charged prior to coming to class because outlets are limited and/or not easily accessible), Windows 7 or later (occasional issues reported with Windows 8) or Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10) or later, and access to Office 365. Blackboard system can be found at http://virtualcampus.irsc.edu/computer-requirements-for-online-learning.html. Browser compatibility with the above systems is critical. Non-IRSC systems such as Navigate 2, Connect, and Fisdap should work on similar browsers/versions as IRSC’s Blackboard system. Free Internet access is available on all IRSC campuses, and student access computers are available in the libraries. The college does not require that students have Internet access outside of the college; however, students are required to utilize all the Program’s online resources, check their Office 365 RiverMail and Blackboard at least once daily, and meet assignment and documentation submission deadlines. Computer or Internet issues at home are not an excuse. IRSC Computer Requirements Students must have a reliable computer and Internet connection throughout the course.
