ABOUT “A CHORUS LINE” From the moment that the lights rose on the first public performance of A Chorus Line at Joe Papp’s Public Theatre, it was clear that this show about the lives of Broadway dancers was a phenomenon! No one had ever seen anything like it. The musical used a simple concept; a group of dancers auditioning for a bullying director, to unmask the misogyny, homophobia and ethnic stereotypes lurking at the heart of the culture. Sparely designed yet emotionally complex, A Chorus Line holds up a mirror to the here and now. Two dancers, Tony Stevens and Michon Peacock, originally had the idea for the musical. The show was formed from sever-al taped workshop sessions with Broadway dancers, known as “gypsies,” including eight who eventually appeared in the original cast. Michael Bennett, who had just worked with Peacock on Seesaw, was invited to join these “encounter” sessions. Bennett asked the dancers to speak candidly about their beginnings, professional and personal. He wanted to get to the core of the personalities, their memories and the reasons they began dancing. The stories he heard clicked with the idea he also had rattling around in his head of a musical about dancers. He was inspired, believe it or not, by the Watergate hearings, and the “falsehood and apathy” that gripped the country in those days. From these sessions, a musical libretto was pieced together. Playwright/novelist James

Kirkwood and former dancer Nicholas Dante assembled the book. Marvin Hamlish and Ed Kleban supplied the vibrant, rhyth-mical score. A Chorus Line opened Off-Broadway at The Public Theater on April 15, 1975. At the time, the Public did not have enough money to finance the production so it borrowed $1.6 million to produce the show. The show was directed and co-choreographed (with Bob Avian) by Michael Bennett. The entire run sold out immediately. Producer Joseph Papp moved the production to Broadway, and July 25, 1975, it opened at the Shubert Theatre, where it ran for 6,137 performances until April 28, 1990. For some time, it held the record as the longest-running musical in history. A Chorus Line won seven Drama Desk Awards, the New York Critic’s Circle Award, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and 9 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Score, Book, Lighting, Direction & Choreography (Bennett), and Donna McKechnie (Best Actress), Sammy Williams (Best Featured Actor) and Kelly Bishop (Best Featured Actress). The show has something powerful and important to say about vulnerability and cour-age, regret and resilience, love and loss. In the messy dance of life, not everyone will make the cut, but we can put on our biggest smile and give it that old show-business try. Finally affirming that, win or lose, life goes on.

WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE 3

Prior to the first performance of A Chorus Line at the Public Theatre in 1975, the origi-nal company collectively appeared in 72 Broadway Shows, 17 national companies and 9 bus and truck tours in which they gave a total of 37,095 performances. Collectively they had 612 years of dance training with 748 teachers – counting duplications. They spent approximately $894 a month on dance lessons. While performing they sustained 30 back, 26 knee and 36 ankle injuries. The characters portrayed in A Chorus Line are, for the most part, based upon the lives and experiences of Broadway dancers. The show is dedicated to anyone who has ever danced in a chorus or marched in step…anywhere.

County Business Hall of Fame,” pioneered the Dinner Theatre concept in Westchester when they opened An Evening Dinner Theatre on July 9, 1974. Having designed and built An Evening from the ground up as a theatre that serves dinner and lunch, they established their operation as a cultural mainstay in the tri-state area. The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the only year round theatre in Westchester where Broadway performers, directors and designers gather to create the best in Musical Theatre. (They have produced more shows than most Broadway producers. A Chorus Line, we are proud to say, is their 204th Production!) The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the longest running, 52 week a year Equity theatre in the State of New York. Each show is produced exclu-sively for the theatre and each is approached in the same manner as Broadway Productions: casting Broadway performers at auditions in New York City, and hiring the creative staff (Directors, Choreographers, Musical Directors, Set, Costume and Lighting Designers). On the dark nights of the musicals, Bill and Bob have presented over 900 Monday and Tuesday night specials and, in 1997, inaugurated the Gold Star Series of Concerts presenting Jackie Mason to a sold-out house. Other great performers in the Gold Star series have been Tom Jones, George Carlin, Paul Anka, Wayne Newton, and Harry Belafonte. With the continued support of the people of the tri-state area, we pledge to contin-ue to present the best in theatre and dining.
