A moment with Sal Higgins; Research Midwife
Training last year to become a Supervisor of Midwives at Brighton University reinforced the
importance of evidence-based pracce specically within the context of paent safety. For so much
of our pracce in Maternity Services there is a paucity of high-quality quantave and qualitave
research evidence hence working in a team to redress this seems a meaningful soluon. My passion
is to enquire to reveal facts which will improve outcomes for women and babies.
I look forward to developing as a research midwife and thanks to the paence and generosity of the
Royal London/QM team I think I have made a good start.
I have been a clinical midwife for ten years working in a variety of sengs including
a couple of unforgeable trips to Ethiopia. There I taught obstetric emergency skills
and drills in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 to reduce
child (perinatal) mortality and improve maternal health in Sub-Saharan Africa. The
sense of perspecve this has given me cannot be underesmated. I returned each
me with renewed enthusiasm for the value of our NHS and the commitment and
energy its principles demand.
