The government is building dams andreservoirs throughout the nation. Meanwhile, itis building more lakes and embankments whileimplementing river water pumping andunderground water tapping projects. As a result, the entire nation is now enjoying an adequatesupply of irrigation and drinking water.

Khabaung Diversion Weir wasconstructed with the aim of irrigating farmlandsnearby. Situated near Shwelaung Village, OttwinTownship, Bago Division, the diversion wirewas opened on 28 June.

The diversion weir, which is the 46th of itskind in Bago Division, will be able to benefit100,000 acres of farmland in Toungoo and OttwinTownships. Nowadays, three million acres havebeen put under monsoon paddy, therebycontributing to meeting the target of cultivating400,000 acres of summer paddy.

With the emergence of 212 dams andreservoirs including Khabaung Diversion Weir, farmers are now able to engage in extendedcultivation of monsoon and summer paddy aswell as in double and mixed cropping.

The increase in the irrigated areas hasresulted in the boost in the yield of crops. Of thenet sown acreage of over 28 million in the nation, the irrigated acreage is over 5 million.

The agriculture sector has been able toproduce over 1,500 million baskets of paddymaking better use of irrigation water.

Recently, some farmlands in Ayeyawadyand Yangon Divisions were damaged in thestorm. Farmers in the storm-hit regions are tostrive for boosting production and ensuring foodsecurity making the most of land and waterresources.

At a time when more irrigation projectsare being implemented across the nation farmersare to try their utmost for boosting productionof monsoon and summer paddy as well as edibleoil crops. Only then, will they be able to exceedthe target of crop production.

NARRAGANSETT BAY, 30June—Global warminghas caused dramatic shiftsin some aquatic com-munities in which fishpopulations die off andlobsters, crabs and squidmove in.

The finding comes froma new analysis of 50 yearsworth of fish-trawling datacollected in NarragansettBay and adjacent Rhode

Resident fish com-munities have pro-gressively shifted fromvertebrate species (fish) tothe invertebrates (lobstersand crabs); from bottom-feeders to species that findtheir food higher up in thewater column; and fromlarger, cool-water species

to smaller, warm-waterdwellers.

“This is a prettydramatic change, and it’sa pattern that is being seenin other ecosystems ... butwe’re in the relativelyunique position of beingable to document it,” saidJeremy Collie of theUniversity of RhodeIsland, leader of the newstudy.—Internet

So, I put her on my shoulderprostrate and pressed herback gently several times.By good fortune, the blouseI wore at that time was aflannel one. I took it off andwrapped my daughter withit. The wind and the rainwere striking my back asthough I were beaten with awhip. I had to showresilience the whole nightand the whole morning. Inthe meantime, I wasbreastfeeding her. I tookgreat care in case I didn’tdrop her.

“I had to try my bestfor my daughter’s survival.I might die, but it didn’tmatter. What was the mostimportant was that mydaughter was not injuredand she continued tosurvive. My daughter is mywhole life. The injuries inmy back were not serious atall if compared with the casefor her survival. I dared tomake sacrifice my life ifnecessary.”

(C)“Hi, friend, come on

and take a seat. I’m gettingbetter. The doctor said thatmy leg will turn to normal.I can translate your look atme. Now, my mind is stillin normal conditions, KhinLay. I have a word with youwhen we are alone. When Iwitnessed my husband’stragic end, I felt as though Iwere deranged. I wished tosacrifice my life if thatwould save the lives of myfamily members. As youknow, I am a teacher andmy husband and I lived indifferent townships. Duringsummer vacation, I washelping him with his workat the factory. We did notgo back home. At the nightthe storm took place, therewas no one but our familymembers in the factory. Iheard a lot of noise becausethe storm was blowing thecorrugated iron sheets offthe roof and downing thetrees outside the factory. Isuggested Ko Kyaw Maungthat we go back home. Hewas worried about thefactory, and said that therewas no difference betweenstaying at home and stayingin the factory. I heard thesnap of the factory’s roof,

cemetery. When we got onthe public rest-house, hiswhole body was icy cold. So, I gave him a massageon his whole body, especially on the centre ofthe soles of his feet thewhole night. He wasshivering, so I tried to keephim warm. The sole of thefoot is the centre of nerves, isn’t it? I had been recitingthe verses of the SupremeAttributes of the ThreeGems and saying prayersfor his recovering from theillness the whole night. Thefollowing morning, Iplucked the sprouts ofnearby watercress andkanaphawt and chewedthem, and then I put thepaste into his mouth to puthim right.

“I even didn’t take awink. If I fell asleep, or if Iwasn’t resilient enough, that would cost myhusband’s life. We hadearned our living togethersince our marriage. We hada son, but he died ofsnakebite. Our family hadonly two members—he andme. So, I had to take care ofhim. You know, there is asaying that goes ‘Treat sonas master, and husband asGod’. My concept was thatif we could not survive, Iwanted to be the one whowould die first. I wanted tosee him survive as a resultof my treatment to him. Iwas desperate to continueto treat and take care ofhim. I tended cattle. I alsoplucked fruit andvegetables and sold them. The medical team put himon a drip, and now, as yousee he is able to speak well.

but I did not think the roofwould collapse to theground. As soon as I heardthe sound of the roofdropping to the ground, Irushed to my two daughtersand covered them. Then, oneof my legs was under thecross beams. Ko KyawMaung and my youngerbrother faced grave danger.I had to harden my heart andhug my elder daughter. Shewas shivering out of fear.My younger daughter wasbrave. I explained thesituations to her. I asked herto run to the village and askwhoever she would meetfirst for help. I said that thecross beams on her fathercould be removed to rescuehim only when she got help.

Khin Lay, my daughter, ran as fast as she could tothe village. But, I realized

that it was late to rescuemy husband. When mydaughter arrived backtogether with somepeople, she was too tiredto speak. I have notreceived any treatment formy injured legs. But, I ampleased because I carriedout funeral services for myhusband and youngerbrother. Do you think Ihave no feelings abouttheir deaths? No, my heartis completely filled withsorrows for their deaths. Ihave to show resiliencebecause I have to take careof the future of my twodaughters. What I will doall must be for them, notfor me.(This article is written inhonour of MyanmarWomen’s Day.)

A single person

from 5 May to date.

In taking

rehabilitation measures

in Labutta, Bogale and

Hainggyikyun, the

Defence Services

(Navy) mobilized the

vessels to repair wells

and lakes for supply of

potable water to the local

Indeed, relief and

been carried out in all

aspects.

The Tatmadawmen

constructed earth roads

stretching altogether

3,990 feet long in

with local farmers

ploughed 70 acres of

Damage and losses

were also caused in the

Ayeyawady Division. As

part of contributions, the

Defence Services (Navy)

distributed 1,000 gallons

of diesel, 55 fishing boats

and 31 fibre fishing boats

measuring 21 feet by four

feet to storm victim

fishermen of Bogale and

Labutta townships.

In addition, the

Defence Services (Navy)

undertook rehabilitation

tasks of the storm-hit

regions with might and

vessels transported

972.23 tons of foodstuffs,

260.99 tons of personal

goods and 697.15 tons of

construction materials

totalling 2,555.84 tons to

necessary areas.

Moreover, the vessels

transported 7,624.475

tons of agricultural inputs

including salty water

the storm-hit regions. The

naval vessels could serve

the transport duty along a

lot of rivers and creeks in

undertaking rehabi-

In Aukpyunwa

were destroyed in the

storm. Therefore, the

huts for 120 families of

the village. Actually, they

performed the tasks to

fulfil the shelter needs of

120 households by

moving them from the

before the rainy season.

Likewise, construction of

LONDON, 30 June—Another item to add to the list ofrising expenses faced by Britons: the royal family.

Queen Elizabeth and her family cost Britain 40million pounds (nearly 80 million US dollars) in thepast fiscal year, about 66 pence per person and a rise oftwo million pounds, or 5.3 per cent.

Palace officials said a drive to conserve energy atpalaces had helped to keep cost rises in check.

The Queen used 7.3 per cent less electricity in 2007-08, helped by the introduction of low-energy lightbulbs. Water from a borehole in Buckingham Palacewas used to cool the wine cellars and water thegardens. But maintenance, utility bills and travel costswent up in a year in which she made state visits to theUnited States, Uganda, Belgium, France and theNetherlands, had 440 engagements across Britain andentertained 38,000 guests at garden parties.

China hails Ouyang ban asbeacon for clean Olympics

BEIJING, 30 June — Chinese officials say a life-timeban on top swimmer Ouyang Kunpeng for a dopingoffence demonstrates the country's determination topresent a clean Beijing Olympics in August.

China’s top backstroker tested positive for the ana-bolic agent clenbuterol last month, dealing the coun-try an embarrassing setback before the August 8-24Games.

“Ouyang’s ban proves nothing but our determina-tion to weed out dope cheats among Chinese athletes,”Yuan Hong, head of the Chinese Olympic Commit-tee’s anti-doping commission, told the Xinhua newsagency.

“No matter how excellent an athlete is, he or she willbe severely punished if they test positive. We willcontinue our zero-tolerance policy in the fight againstdoping in order to send a clean team to the OlympicGames.”

Chinese officials announced Ouyang's ban on Fri-day. First-time offenders usually receive a two-yearban but Ouyang’s tough sentence sent a clear warningto other would-be Chinese offenders.

Chinese swimmers were embroiled in a series ofdoping scandals in the 1990s and the country’s sport-ing authorities have pledged to crack down on drugcheats before the Beijing Games.
