They presented sports gear and stationery to them.At Paw Khant Oil Mill on Pyidaungsu Road in the

township, they viewed production of edible oil withthe use of paddy husk fired generator.

The oil mill can crush 900 baskets of groundnutand 340 viss of groundnut oil per day.

At Mongyai Basic Education High School, theymet departmental officials, social organization mem-bers and townselders.

Hlaing said that there are a lot of cultivable lands in thestate. He stressed the need to extend agriculture andlivestock breeding tasks for economic development oflocal national people.

He said that emphasis is to be placed on cultivationof tea and rubber on a commercial scale. Departmentalpersonnel are to join hands with the local people inundertaking rural development tasks, he added. Hepointed out that efforts are to be made for extension ofacreage of edible oil crops in Shan State (North) tobecome oil bowl of the State.

He presented stationery, medicines and sportsequipment for the township through officials.

At Hoya Village, they viewed thriving groundnutplantations.

In Kyaukme, they looked into sanitation and beau-tifying tasks of the township and development work.

At the hall of Kyaukme Station, Maj-Gen MinAung Hlaing met servicemen and family members andpresented sports gear and stationery to the families.

At Kyaukme District Gymnasium, they met ath-letes of sports teams of the district and gave words ofencouragement. Later, Maj-Gen Min Aung Hlaingpresented sports equipment to the sports teams throughChairman of the District PDC U Kyaw Than.

The government has been striving forthe progress of national races by undertakingborder and rural area development projects.

In the past the border regions laggedbehind others in development as they hadbeen ignored by the imperialists due to theirgeographical barriers while Myanmar wasunder colonial rule.

With peace and stability prevailing inthose border regions in the time of theTatmadaw government, national racedevelopment projects have been implementedsince 1989, and the national people haveenjoyed fruits of political, economic and socialimprovements.

Now is the time when these developmentprojects have reached the second year of thefourth five-year plan. The government hasspent over 231,113 million kyats on theprogress of border areas since 1989.

Nowadays, the State is nurturing theyouth to become intellectuals andintelligentsia who are familiar with modernscience and technology. In doing so, measuresare also being taken for the young nationalraces from the border regions by openingtraining schools for the development ofnationalities youth.

All in all, the State has seen peace andstability in the whole Union including theborder areas with sound economic and socialfoundations. All the national people,therefore, are urged to strive to achieve moredevelopment the length and breadth of thenation.

Work together to keep schoolchildren healthy and fit

School health activities are of paramount

importance for the health of schoolchildren that

constitute an important force of the nation.

World Health Organization said that investment

in school health activities yielded much benefit with

low costs for health and fitness of the people. Since

1995, the WHO has launched Global School Health

Initiative, calling on all member countries to pursue

the common goal to improve the school health

around the world.

National discipline and health originates at

schools. With the aim of improving the health of

schoolchildren, the programme “School Health

Activities”, part of the national health plan and

community health care plan, is being implemented

by the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the

Ministry of Education, school health committees,

and congenial organizations.

The two ministries designated the month of

August for the School Health Activities Week. The

School Health Activities Week for this year is from

11 to 15 August.

The purposes of school health activities are: (a)

to improve the health and fitness of the

schoolchildren, (b) to help schoolchildren understand

and practise school health education and behaviours

and enjoy healthy living lifestyle, (c) to address

health problems of schoolchildren in the early stages,

(d) to create healthy and pleasant schools and

environments, (e) to nurture schoolchildren into an

all-round younger generation, (f) to improve the

health standard of schoolchildren and their family

members, wards, townships and entire people through

effective school health activities.

Under the plan to establish schools with high

health standard, previous methods of school health

activities are upgraded and school health activities

course for principals is conducted in every township.

Functions being carried out by health staff of township

school health departments or township Health

Departments in schools region-wise include (1) giving

school health talks, (2) sanitation tasks, (3) disease

control measures, (4) improving schoolchildren’s

nutrition and ensuring hygienic foods, (5) school health

care, (6) spreading of healthy living lifestyle from

schools to the public, (7) consolation and social welfare

tasks, (8) training courses and research, and (9) school

sport.

The plan to establish schools with high health

standard covers establishment of tobacco free schools,

aedes free schools, rubbish free schools, and model

schools.

Under the programme of the World Health

Organization, a school health delegation from Maldives

observed measures for implementation of the plan to

establish schools with high health standard in Myanmar

in August 2006.

In order to achieve the goal, measures are being

taken in collaboration with the Education Planning and

Training Department, the Development Affairs

Department, the Myanmar Women’s Affairs

Federation, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare

Association, Union Solidarity and Development

Association, parent-teacher associations, school

boards of trustees, World Vision, WFP, AMI, WHO

and UNICEF.

Now, the plan for keeping schools free from

aedes is in progress for protecting schoolchildren

from dengue hemorrhage fever. DHF cases are

common in all the states and divisions exclusive of

Chin State. So, teachers and students have to

participate all-year round in preventive measures

against aedes.

During the school health activities week, state/

division and township Health Departments under the

Ministry of Health and school health committees are

carrying out five school health tasks namely (a)

cleanliness of school and environments, (b) medical

check-up and treatment, (c) disease control measures,

(d) health education talks, and (e) improvement of

schoolchildren’s nutrition.

With the contribution of the Nutrition Department

and UNICEF, about five million primary

schoolchildren are being given medicines against

worms for the first time in the townships in states and

divisions from July 2008 to the school health activities

week. The plan will go for two more years.

Since last year’s school health activities week,

the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education

have launched the Global School-based student health

survey with the assistance of the WHO. The survey

will be conducted over 2806 students aged between

13 and 15 (seventh to tenth standards) in 50 selected

schools in states and divisions in relation to personal

hygiene, consumption of nutritious food, physical

exercise, use of alcohol and tobacco-based products,

mental health conditions and disease preventive

measures. The survey has proved successful.

Related ministries, departments, social

organizations and the people are urged to work together

as a national duty for sustainable achievement of

school health activities.

Hiking and mountaineering uplift the spiritual

and physical fitness.

Regarding the recent journey to Kelatha and

Weponla mountain ranges, an interview was

conducted with Chairman U Myo Thant of

Universities’ Hiking and Mountaineering Asso-

ciation.

In the interview, U Myo Thant said, “The journey

was aimed at enabling new members of the hiking

and mountaineering team to participate in the team

work, sharpen diligence, perseverance, courage and

tenacity, nurture obedience and enhance the esprit de

corps, uplift national health and fitness by hiking and

mountaineering and possess the courage to overcome

difficulties in life.”

Members of the hiking and mountaineering team

led by U Myo Thant scaled Mount Weponla and

Mount Kelatha between Yekkanthema and Winka

villages in Bilin Township of Mon State from 17 to

20 July this year.

He recounted his experiences to the news

practice of endurance, arrangements were made to go

on the journey because the area was accessible and it

would save money. In addition, the mountains in the

area have appropriate heights for the beginner

mountaineers.”

The Universities’ Hiking and Mountaineering

Team left Yangon by train at 7 am on 17 July and

arrived at Mayangon Station beyond Kyaikto of Mon

State. In the afternoon, they proceeded to Weponla Hill

from Mayangon Statioon on foot. Although Weponla

Hill is about 1,000 feet high, the team members passed

through ridges and hillocks along the route. At 5 pm on

Myanmar Affairs Studies Department of the Library

of Yangon University.

On 19 July, they went down Weponla Hill and

passed through Winka Village to scale about 2,000

feet high Kelapha Hill. After that, members of the

team continued climbing Kelatha Hill. It was learnt

that Kelatha Hill is over 2,000 feet high and the team

members climbed up the hill without tiredness.

After taking a break on Kelatha Hill, they went

up Myathabeik Hill in the afternoon. It was a mountain

of about 1,500 feet high. On the hill, they took a break

and then went back to Weponla Hill where they set up

their camp. In the evening, they arrived back at

Weponla Hill.

On 20 July, the team members proceeded to

Mayangon Station from Weponla Hill. They left the

station for Yangon by train and arrived back in

Yangon in the evening.

U Myo Thant said, “Such journey made the new

members to take interest in hiking and mountaineering

trips. Moreover, they gained the first-hand experience

of mountaineering.”

As a result, “the journey to Kelatha and

Weponla mountain ranges” of members of

Universities’ Hiking and Mountaineering Association

was a trip that refreshed the youth.

Airways flight landed safely Wednesday night after aproblem with one of its engines on a flight fromAustralia to New Zealand, the company said, the latestin a series of mechanical incidents for the airline.

One of four engines on a Boeing 747-300 fromMelbourne was “reduced to idle” speed while theairplane approached Auckland Airport on Wednesdaynight, Qantas spokeswoman Holly Williams said.

Unknown disease killsnine in western Uganda

KAMPALA, 14 Aug—Nine people out of 27 caseshave so far died of an unidentified epidemic that has hitthe western Ugandan district of Kasese in recent weeks,a district official has said.

Peter Mukobi, the district health officer, told Xinhuaby telephone on Wednesday that preliminaryinvestigations show that the outbreak may be typhoidbut he is awaiting confirmatory results from thecountry’s central public laboratory.

He said that the victims showed signs and symptomsof fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea and later constipation.

A medical team from the health ministry is alreadyin the district carrying out various tests and promotingproper hygiene and sanitation as one of the measures tocontain the spread of the disease, he said.

“We are advising people to drink boiled water, washhands after going to the toilet, dispose off fecal matterproperly and generally maintain proper hygiene,” saidMukobi.

Dairy is recognized as akey component of ahealthy, balanced diet.However, until now it wasunclear how long-termdairy intake contributes tothe many aspects of bone

health in children,including bone density,bone mineral content, andbone area.

In the study, researchersfrom Boston Universitygathered information from106 children, 3 to 5 yearsof age at the beginning ofthe study, over a 12-yearperiod. The familiesenrolled in the study weregiven food diaries tocomplete for the child andwere asked to recordeverything the child ate anddrank for several days eachyear. The researchers usedthese diaries, along withother standard information,to calculate the children’saverage daily intake ofdairy and other foods.

At the end of the 12-

year period, the authorsassessed the bone health ofthe now-adolescent studyparticipants. They foundthat the adolescents whohad consumed 2 or moreservings of dairy per dayas children had higherlevels of bone mineralcontent and bone density.

Even after adjusting forfactors that affect normalbone development,including the child’sgrowth, body size,and activity level, theauthors found that theseadolescents’ average bonemineral content was 175grams higher than theadolescents who hadconsumed less than 2servings of dairy perday.—Internet

China raises tax on bigcars to cut pollution

SHANGHAI, 14 Aug—China is raising its sales taxon big cars to as high as 40 percent, and drasticallycutting taxes on small cars, in its latest attempt tocombat emissions that contribute to heavy blanketsof smog over most of its cities.

The tax on passenger vehicles with enginesbigger than 4 liters will be doubled to 40 percentfrom 20 percent, effective Sept. 1, the FinanceMinistry said Wednesday in a statement on itsWeb site.

Those buying vehicles with engines sized from 2liters up to 4 liters will have to pay a 25 percent tax, upfrom the current 15 percent, it said.

“Autos are the giants of energy consumption andpollution emissions and this is a major part of the effortto conserve resources and reduce emissions,” theministry said.

The sales tax for cars with engines at or smaller than1 liter would drop to 1 percent from the current 3percent, the Finance Ministry said.

Tax rates of 5 percent to 9 percent for vehicles withother-sized engines remain unchanged.

10,000 gallons of cruderesidues spill in Ecuador

QUITO, 14 Aug—At least 10,000 gallons (37,854litres) of petroleum residues were spilled into a river inEcuador along the border with Colombia, local mediareported on Wednesday.

The accident occurred when a tanker travellingfrom the industrial region of Shushufindi to theEcuadoran capital Quito tipped over in the AguaricoRiver, local TV Ecuavisa reported.

The crude spilled over an area of 800 squaremetres contaminating both the water and the tidelandalong the river. The possible consequences for thecommunities living in the area were not mentioned.

The Environment Protection Management ofPetroproduction, a subsidiary of the national oilcompany Petroecuador, activated an emergency planand sent two cleaning groups to set restraint barriersand absorbent materials to prevent the crude fromfurther expanding and to minimize the environmentalimpact.

Last June, a petroleum leakage affected an area of4,000 square metres in the Amazonia River when a oilpipe broke some 190 kilometres east of Quito,Petroecuador said.—MNA/Xinhua

Oil prices rebound on USinventory drop

NEW YORK, 14 Aug— Crude oil rebound nearlythree US dollars Wednesday after a report showed abigger-than-expected decline in the US gasoline andcrude supplies.

Light, sweet crude for September delivery jumped2.99 US dollars to settle at 116.00 dollars a barrel afterrising to as high as 117.46 dollars on the New YorkMercantile Exchange.

The US Energy Department’s Energy InformationAdministration (EIA) said in its weekly report thatgasoline stockpiles fell by 6.4 million barrels to 202.8million barrels for the week ended August 8, muchmore than analysts had expected.
