A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE
Today’s gospel guarantees if we “ask” we will “receive,”
perhaps not what we wanted but what our Heavenly
Father knows is best for us. All the love we have for our
children, God has for us and more. As our children trust
us, we must trust “Our Father.”

Jesus told his disciples that we are to pray often.
Sometimes, however, when we pray, God doesn't give
us the answer that we want. That's when we find out
our level of spiritual maturity.
The extremely immature Christian will react as if his
prayer wasn't heard at all. He will become angry and
resentful at God. In order to justify that anger, he may
even start trying to convince himself that God doesn't
exist. This is a familiar pattern in contemporary
philosophy, art, literature, and entertainment. And yet, it
is fundamentally self-centered.
The only time we doubt whether God hears our
prayers, is when we don't get what we want right when
we want it. If we say a prayer of thanksgiving or praise,
for example, we never doubt that God hears it.
Uncontrolled frustration at supposedly unanswered
prayer, then, is a sign of spiritual immaturity. More
mature Christians know that God hears and answers
every prayer. But that answer can come in three
different forms, as St Augustine taught long ago.
If we ask God for something in prayer, God can say
one of three things in response:
First, he can say OK, and give us what we ask for.
Second, he can simply say no, which means that
what we are asking for is not good for us. This too is an
answer to prayer, and, as every parent knows,
sometimes it's the most loving answer of all.
Third, he can say OK, but not now.
Yes, No, and Not Now - these are the three answers
that God has to choose from in responding to our
petitions, and he always chooses one of them.
Keeping this in mind can help us overcome the
temptation to throw spiritual temper tantrums when God
doesn't give us exactly what we want.

STUDENTS FOR LIFE PROJECT
FIRST NEWS RELEASE
The future lies in the heart of the young. It is for this reason that a local group of concerned citizens decided to form a
committee and initiate the Students for Life Project.
Students for Life is a means for bringing high school students together to be educated on the human rights
issue of abortion and to learn to debate the issue in a reasoned and civil manner. It is our young who will
shape the culture of the future. The hope is that it will be a culture that embraces life.
Mary Meyer, coordinator for the project, stated, “Given the state of our nation regarding abortion, the issue calls for
action now more than ever.” Meyer reached out to superintendents in area school districts to tell them of the
committee’s desire to initiate Student for Life groups in area school districts. She invited them to collaborate on the
project. The school districts contacted were Bradford, Brockway, Cameron, Clearfield, Dubois, Johnsonburg, Kane,
Punxsutawney, Ridgway and St. Marys. Also contacted were Dubois Central Catholic High School, Penn State
Dubois, and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Early response has been positive. Dr. James Wortman,
assistant superintendent of the St. Marys Area School District, agreed to be on the committee and is welcoming
inquiry about the project from other superintendents and directors of student affairs.
The Students for Life Project is hosting a gathering on the morning of August 9 to bring together any and all from
our area who want to learn more about the human rights issue of abortion and the project itself. Community leaders,
youth ministers and others who work with high school students, school administrators and staff, pastors, parents,
students, pro-life volunteers are all welcome and encouraged to bring others. Details on the agenda for the program
will be forthcoming. Lunch will be served compliments of Life Matters, the parent group of concerned citizens of which
the Students for Life Project is a sub-committee.
For more information about the project or to make reservations for the August 9 event, please contact Mary
Meyer, 335-8019, or Mary Bea Maloney, 834-3834.
