CHAPTER 1 EST3 OPC Server

The Lenel EST3 OPC alarm and events server is an application that interfaces with up to eight EST3 Fire Panels per server. The EST3 OPC Server provides a means for events from EST3 Fire Panels to pass into OnGuard so that data is saved to the OnGuard database and displayed in Alarm Monitoring. In this scenario, OnGuard is the OPC Client, although other OPC Clients are also compatible with the Lenel EST3 OPC Server.

Note: In order to use the OnGuard software as a client and monitor status updates from the EST3 Fire Panel, OnGuard 7.0 or later is required.

EST3 Fire Panel

The master EST3 Fire Panel communicates to the EST3 OPC server via a connection between the printer port on the EST3 Fire Panel and a serial communication port on the EST3 OPC Server machine. For more information, refer to Configuring the Printer Port for Supervision on page 13.

Note: To provide proper support for the communication status within the integration, the EST3 Fire Panel must support a supervised printer port. This requires firmware version v5.x or later for the CPU and SDU. When used with earlier EST3 Fire Panels, v3.x and v4.x, the integration can still provide annunciation of events into OnGuard, but does not support OPC panel status in Alarm Monitoring (refer to the Panel Settings section in the Configuration Setting Table on page 11) to monitor the communication between OnGuard and the EST3 Fire Panel.

Permissions

The EST3 OPC Server does not require any permissions. However, the OnGuard client requires the standard permissions for OPC Connections and OPC sources for operators to monitor alarms and events from the EST3 OPC Server.

Notes: System Permissions for OPC Connections and Sources are found on the Administration > Users > System Permission Groups > Additional Data Sources sub-tab of the System Administration application.

Refer to the Users Folder chapter in the System Administration User Guide to set the standard permissions.

Licensing

The EST3 OPC Server does not require an OnGuard Fire Panel license. However, to use OnGuard as an OPC Client (necessary to receive events from the EST3 OPC Server) then SWG-1465 - OPC Client Option and OnGuard software licensing are required.


CHAPTER 2 Installation

The EST3 OPC Server can send and receive events from the EST3 Fire Panel, and it can receive status updates from the EST3 Fire Panel.

The EST3 OPC Server cannot send commands to the EST3 Fire Panel.

The following flowchart represents a simple set up using the EST3 Fire Panel, EST3 OPC Server and OnGuard as an OPC Client.

To set up a similar type of configuration you must complete the following procedures:

1. Download the EST3OPCServer.zip file from https://partner.lenel.com/downloads/onguard/7.3/add-ons. (You will need your Lenel login to gain access to this site.)

2. Unzip the file and install the EST3 OPC Server application (EST3OPCServer.exe) on the computer designated as the server.

3. Connect the master EST3 Fire Panel to the EST3 OPC Server via a serial connection.

If OnGuard is the OPC Client:

1. Install OnGuard on the server and any other client computer.

2. In OnGuard, add an OPC Connection.

3. Configure the EST3 OPC Server default parameters, especially if you have more than one fire panel.

Installation Procedures

Install the EST3 OPC Server Application

1. Download the EST3OPCServer.zip file fromhttps://partner.lenel.com/downloads/onguard/7.3/add-ons.

(You will need your Lenel login to gain access to this site.)

2. Unzip the file and double-click the EST3OPCServer.exe file.

3. Follow the prompts to install the EST3 OPC Server application.

Connect the Master Fire Panel to the Server

The master EST3 Fire Panel connects to the EST3 OPC Server through a serial port. Multiple fire panels may be networked together, but only the master fire panel must be directly connected to the server via a serial connection.

Using OnGuard as an OPC Client

OnGuard Installation Prerequisites

Different OnGuard applications and services will be installed on different computers based on the purpose of the computer. The following components must be installed on any computer with an OnGuard application prior to installing the OnGuard software. These components are found on the Supplemental Materials disc.

• DirectX

• Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1

• Windows Server 2012

• Windows Server 2012 R2

• Windows 7 with Service Pack 1

• Windows 8

• Windows 8.1

• Adobe Acrobat Reader (not required to install OnGuard, but needed to open the documentation)

OnGuard Installation Requirements

If OnGuard is not already installed, refer to the Installation Guide.

EST3 OPC Server Requirements

• A Communication Server needs to run for any EST3 OPC Server to communicate to the OnGuard client. Typically the Communication Server is installed on the same computer as the EST3 OPC Server, although it can be installed on a separate computer.





Note: One Communication Server communicates with multiple EST3 OPC Servers. You do not need to install a separate Communication Server for each EST3 OPC Server.

OnGuard Client Requirements

• Install the Alarm Monitoring application on any alarm monitoring station.

• At least OnGuard version 7.3 is required to use OnGuard as a client.

• Install the software license on the License Server.

• At least one computer anywhere in the system needs the System Administration application installed in order to configure the OnGuard system. Use the System Administration application to:

– Add an OPC Connection to the workstation running the Communication Server. This allows alarms and data to be sent from the EST3 OPC Server to alarm monitoring stations and to the OnGuard database.

– Add the OPC Connection to a monitor zone if the monitor zone was created after the OPC Connection was added.

Note: By default the EST3 OPC Connection is added to every monitor zone when the OPC Connection is added.

• Add alarm monitoring users and their internal accounts, passwords, system permissions and monitoring permissions.

Add an OPC Connection

In order to obtain data from an EST3 OPC Server, OnGuard must establish a connection to the server. This is accomplished in the OPC Connections folder in the System Administration application.

Note: Users must have the correct permissions to view, add, modify or delete the OPC Connection. These permissions are located on the Administration > Users > System Permission Groups > Additional Data Sources sub-tab of the System Administration application.

For your convenience the instructions to add an OPC Connection are included. These instructions apply to OnGuard version 7.3 and may change with future OnGuard versions.

1. Start the System Administration application. From the Additional Hardware menu, select OPC Connections. The OPC Connections folder opens.

2. On the OPC Connections tab, click [Add].

3. If segmentation is not enabled, skip this step. If segmentation is enabled:

a. The Segment Membership window opens. Select the segment that this OPC Connection will be assigned to.

b. Click [OK].

4. In the Name field, type a name for the OPC Connection.

5. Select whether the OPC Connection will be online.

6. Select the workstation the Communication Server is running on.

7. Using the [Browse] button, browse all available OPC Servers on the network and select the appropriate Program ID. The Host Name automatically populates.

8. Click [Test OPC Connection] to verify the OPC Connection is successful and to view the current OPC Server status.

9. Click [OK].

Configure EST3 OPC Server Parameters

The EST3 OPC Server parameter file (LNLEST3OPC.INI).is located in the Windows directory. The default parameters for the EST3 OPC Server assume there is only one EST3 Fire Panel on the unit directly connected to the EST3 OPC Server. If your setup includes several EST3 Fire Panels you must modify the NumPanels=X field such that X equals the total number of fire panels on the unit directly connected to the EST3 OPC Server. You also need to add the baud rate and COM port setting for each fire panel.

Required Parameters

When you add a fire panel, three fields are required.

• NumPanels=

• BaudRateX=

• ComPortX=

where X equals any one of the fire panels 1 through 8

The following example shows there are two fire panels. Notice there are BaudRate1, ComPort1, BaudRate2 and ComPort2 settings.

Optional Parameters

There are also a wide variety of optional parameters that can be modified. Refer to the Configuration Setting Table for a comprehensive list of parameters.



Note: The X in the Setting column should be replaced with the value 1–8 depending on which panel the setting refers to.

Using Any OPC Client

Using Any OPC Client

The Lenel EST3 OPC Server can be connected to any OPC Client locally or remotely. Locally the client can be on the same machine as the server. Remotely the client connects to server by means of DCOM.

• OPC Clients connect to the server using standard COM object installation routines.

• Clients set up two-way communication using connection point interfaces. This communication can be turned off by clients at any time.

• Clients disconnect from the server by releasing all the server COM objects, which manage their own lifetime through reference counting as required by COM specification.

• Performance when communicating with external systems is highly dependent on network conditions, external system performance and the usefulness of external server APIs.

Automated Server Start Up

Starting the EST3 OPC Server does not require any operator intervention at the workstation where the server is located. The underlying COM technology automates the start upon the initial request from a client application.

After launching, the presence of the server is shown only in the Windows Task Manager. The EST3 OPC Server does not have a graphical interface.

Configuring the Printer Port for Supervision

The printer connection between the EST3 Fire Panel and the OnGuard communication server machine can be supervised.

To configure supervision for the printer port on the EST3 Fire Panel:

1. In the EST3 SDU 5.2 software, open the Cabinet Configuration window and configure Port 1 as follows:

• From the Port 1 Type menu, select Supervised Printer.

• In the Port 1 Enabled field, check the desired boxes.

Refer to the following example:

2. Using a DB9 connection, connect the printer port on the EST3 Fire Panel to the serial port on the OnGuard communication server machine as follows:

• Pin 2 to TXD of panel 232 port

• Pin 3 to RXD of panel 232 port

• Pin 5 to COM of panel 232 port

Note: For complete installation and configuration of the EST3 Fire Panel, refer to the documentation supplied with the panel.


CHAPTER 3 Alarm Monitoring

Where EST3 Fire Panel Events Display in Alarm Monitoring

There are two main windows in the Alarm Monitoring application where EST3 Fire Panel information displays: Main Alarm Monitor window and System Hardware window.

Main Alarm Monitor Window

The Main Alarm Monitor window displays information about individual alarms and events as they occur. Operators can specify which event types to monitor as well as what information about the events displays (by selecting which columns display).

Note: Refer to the Alarm Monitoring User Guide for information on operator procedures and viewing preferences.

OnGuard Event Types to Monitor

All EST3 Fire Panel Events are considered Generic events in Alarm Monitoring. Therefore the Generic event type must be selected to view EST3 Fire Panel Events. Event types are selected in the Alarm Filter for Main Alarm Monitor window located by selecting the Configure > Alarm Filter menu option.

Columns to Display in Main Alarm Monitor Window

Information about each alarm and event is broken down into columns. Operators can adjust the order these columns display as well as chose which columns display at all. To display the most information you can about EST3 Fire Panel alarms and events the following columns should be displayed:

• Alarm Description

• Time/Date

• Controller

• Device

Note: The Controller column displays the name of the OPC Connection configured in System Administration application.


Alarm Monitoring

Monitor Panel Status

If the EST3 Fire Panel loses communication, the panel goes offline in Alarm Monitoring and a red “X” appears in the System Hardware Tree. If the panel has been added to a map, it will also show as offline on the map. If the EST3 Fire Panel goes offline, a “Communication Lost” alarm occurs in Alarm Monitoring.

Note: Device Status in Alarm Monitoring for the EST3 Fire Panel applies only to the panel, not to any downstream points or sensors.

System Hardware Window

The System Hardware window displays hardware information in a hierarchical fashion:

1. Monitor zone

2. OPC Connection

3. OPC Source

When the OPC Connection is added, it is added to every monitor zone available in OnGuard. Operators can right-click an icon in the System Hardware window to trace alarms, update the hardware status, view maps and launch video.

The update hardware status right-click option helps you determine if the Communication Server is communicating with the OPC Server. If a red “X” displays through OPC Connection or OPC Source icon then the Communication Server is not communicating to the OPC Server.

Which EST3 Fire Panel Events Display in Alarm Monitoring

Three categories of events are sent from the EST3 Server to OnGuard:

• Off Normal Conditions

• Operator Commands

• Acknowledgments

Off Normal Conditions

Off normal conditions are messages reported for unusual (off normal) conditions as well as restore messages. The following is an example of an off normal message (common trouble restore).



Refer to the following table to identify which column in the Main Alarm Monitor window specific parts of an Off Normal Condition display.

Operator Commands

There are two types of operator commands issued from the EST3 Fire Panel: System Commands and Device Commands.

System Commands

System commands apply to the entire system. Refer to the example that follows.

Device commands operate devices.

The information displayed in the Device column in Alarm Monitoring depends on the type of command. With Device commands, the Device column represents the device the operator command applied to. With System Commands, the Device column represents the device the command was executed from.
