DECEMBER 16, 2018 3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Third Sunday of Advent

My Olympic sport is worrying. I’m the best who ever played the game. What makes me particularly versa-tile is that, the very second one worry is resolved, I can leap immediately to the next one, and the next one. It’s an arrogant way to live, if you think about it.

I never stop to give thanks when the first worry turns up solved. I call up the next one in the queue and begin massaging it, marinating it, simmering it over an endlessly warm burner. I look at every possible way things can go fatally awry. I’m pretty sure it’s up to me to keep the planets in their fixed orbits. When turbu-lence bounces the plane around I think I need to get up there and take over.

Have no anxiety about anything, says Paul. Easy for him to say? Well, let’s see. Prior to his imprisonment in Rome (the location of this letter, probably around the year 62), Paul had been shipwrecked, snake-bit, stoned with rocks, and left to languish in prisons in Caesarea and Ephesus. Then, the grossly unstable Em-peror Nero of Rome started his persecution of the ear-ly church two years after Paul was imprisoned there.

One day—or was it night?—the Roman guards took Paul from his cell, and led him to the beheading block. Had he trembled in fear of this moment? Had he wor-ried it to death all the years before it happened? We know this: while in chains in Rome, St. Paul ex-horted us to pray, and offer thanks, and tell God what we need. And then, he promised, the peace of Christ will guard us. I’ll bet it guarded him.

How is anxiety stealing my peace?

Original Olive Wood Handicrafts from Bethlehem

December 29th & 30th after all Masses

Olive Wood Statues: Jesus, Virgin Mary, Holy Family, Angels & Saints

Nativity Scenes - Christmas Ornaments - Crosses and Crucifixes

Rosaries & Bracelets - Kitchen Utensils - Church Supplies -Wall Hangings & more!

Bethlehem Handicrafts will be at our church presenting Holy figurines from Christian hands thousands of miles away to your hands, so that a piece of the Holy Land may bring joy and love to your homes. The Bannoura family, some of whom are the artists in Bethlehem, have been blessed to be able to present the work of those 1 percent Christians to our Parish.

Grace your home with handcrafted quality olive wood crafts, meticulously and patiently crafted by Christians from the Holy Land. The hands do the labor, but the tex-ture and color of the grains convey a mellow intrinsic tone.

This art is considered the bread and butter to hundreds of Christian families in the Holy Land and is very detrimental to the existence of the one percent Christian minority in the region, a bracket of society who have weathered the storm to remain as the guardians and pillars of the Holy sites.

The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 8:30 Sundays before the 9 am Mass

LIVE THE LITURGY - This Gaudete Sunday calls us to rejoice because the Lord is near. Does your heart rejoice and sing, or are the pressures and burdens of life weighing you down? We can easily become overwhelmed. The weaknesses and sins of life, indeed our own weakness and sin, eat away at the joy and hope God wants us to know. Those who are grounded in their faith and possess deep spiritual lives know that God is near. Realizing this puts life into perspective. We really want to be free from our bur-dens but do not always know how to achieve this. We keep stumbling and falling. Advent is a time when we can learn to "do life differently," just like John the Baptist instructed the crowds. Joy and hope are the gifts God offers, not anxiety and despair.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - I wish I were a better steward. I would like to think I am a pretty generous person, and I do work hard to cultivate the characteristics of a good Everyday Steward in my life. However, stewardship is about more than giving. It is also about pru-dence and wise planning. It is about storing up grain for the lean years and making sure there is enough oil to light your lamps when the power goes out. If I were a better steward, I would have that $1,000 emergency fund to dip into when I need a car repair. I would save more for retirement and vaca-tion. I would have more food in the garage freezer because I bought more on sale and prepared for when money was a little tighter. In a nutshell, I would be prepared for whatever comes my way, good or bad. Advent is a time of preparation. We not only prepare for Christmas, but for the day when Jesus Christ returns again. Unfortunately, we too often act like this is the only time to prepare for such events. We should be preparing all through-out the year. If we only focus on our spirituality at Advent and Lent, then we are poor stewards of our time the rest of the year. The wise steward is always cultivating their faith and working to im-prove their relationship with God. They know that they need to be prepared for anything at any time. They stand ready, waiting for the call of their God. -- Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
