9/11Anniversary This Tuesday marks the 17th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. We are still searching for an end to violence and terrorism in this world. Here is a prayer that PopeBenedictXVI offered when he visited Ground Zero in 2008: OGodoflove, compassion, andhealing, lookonus, peopleofmanydifferentfaithsandtraditions, whogathertodayatthissite, thesceneofincredibleviolenceandpain. Godofunderstanding,overwhelmedbythemagnitudeofthistragedy,weseekyourlightandguidanceasweconfrontsuchterribleevents.Grantthatthosewhoselivesweresparedmaylivesothattheliveslostheremaynothavebeenlostinvain. Welcome Guests and Visitors. . . We’re so glad that you’re here and invite you to join us in thanksgiving for God’s action in our lives. Our goal is to provide a spiritual home where all are welcome, where the healing, reconciling, liberating love of God flows through us to all people. In this way, we believe that the Church is the sacrament of God’s saving presence in the world.
“Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult (the Mass does not end until the final blessing).
Worship reverently enough not to distract. Dress proudly enough not to offend.”

Kevin Cody, DRE, 630-257-2371, [email protected], www.st-als.org/rel-edu
REGISTRATION FOR 2018-19… IT’S NOT TOO LATE! Application forms had been distributed to students. Contact the RE Office if you can’t locate your form. New families should contact the RE Office to register. We will be happy to assist you in setting your child on a journey with Christ within a supportive faith community. Visit our website, www.st-als.org, for information on our programs.
PRESCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN We have a special program for children ages 3-5, called Little Tykes for Christ. We meet one Wednesday per month from 6:15 – 7:15pm from October through April. CAR WASH
Get your car nice & shiny clean for the weekend while contributing to the Catechist Appreciation Fund!
Saturday 9/15 from Noon – 3:00pm. Car Wash Tokens will be available after Masses next weekend for a goodwill offering.
CHILDREN’S CATECHUMENATE School-aged children who have not been baptized or in 3rd grade or above and have had no formal religious education are invited to see if this journey in faith is for you. This process introduces young people to the person of Jesus and leads them into full membership in his Church. For more information, contact the RE Office.
Several people came along and all saw the child with the sign. She heard them say, “I can’t teach you, I have 5 children… too much work to do and not enough time.” “I can’t teach you either, I have no children and I don’t know how to deal with you… Anyway, isn’t that someone else’s job?” “I don’t know how to teach and I have no experience. But, maybe next year I’ll give it a try.” Then she saw someone carrying a toddler in one arm and a stack of books in the other, went to the child and said: “I’m awfully busy and I’m not a teacher. I have my hands full BUT since you need me, I’ll try to teach you.” We are in need of good people to make some time for our 6th Grade-level children as catechists for the Sunday morning (8:45-10:15) class and the Wednesday evening (6:00 – 7:30) class. If you feel called to join us on our 2018-19 journey by volunteering your time and talents, or would like more information regarding this all important ministry, please contact us by phone or e-mail.

For September we will collect paper products such as paper towels, toilet paper, Kleenex, napkins, etc. Any item that you are able to give is gratefully accepted. The other staples you provide are also necessary. Your kindness and generosity are very much appreciated.

SPRED This is the time of year to consider becoming involved not just in activities required of you or your children, but stretching even your own faith. There are many ways to do this. The SPRED program is one way. The SPRED ministry not only gives you an opportunity to grow in your own faith, but also to reach out to those more vulnerable and guide them as a friend so all grow in faith, trusting in the Lord. We invite parents of people with developmental and intellectual challenges, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and learning problems who live in this community to learn more about this faith development program. We are looking to start a 17-21 age SPRED group at St. Patrick and the current 22+ age group at St. Alphonsus is in need of catechists. Will you consider being one? No experience with those with special needs is required. Join us for a SPRED Informational Gathering on Monday, September 10th 2018 at 6:30pm in the St. Patrick Ministry Building. Our friends with developmental or intellectual disabilities are waiting to be welcomed.
Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time 7 September 9, 2018
SPRED NEWS The St. Alphonsus SPRED group likes to plan an outing during the summer months. We recently enjoyed dinner and a movie. It is always fun to be together! Now we look forward to starting another year!
Are you, or someone you know, drawn to the Catholic Faith?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process by which the Catholic Church welcomes new members into its communal life. RCIA is a living experience of the Church, and not just a series of classes that teach knowledge about the Church. Although there is instruction in the facts of the faith, instruction is but one part of a larger experience of knowing and sharing with other members of the Church.
If you are interested in learning more about our
Tri-Parish RCIA program, please contact Linda at 630-257-2414 or

THANK YOU FOR THE SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Below is a letter from Bethany Lutheran Church expressing their gratitude to St. Alphonsus parishioners for the monetary gifts and school supplies for the children of the Open Pantry. It is a blessing to have parishioners who are thoughtful and caring of fellow community residents. Thank you!

ARE YOU REGISTERED? Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to make a commitment in all its dimensions. It also brings many advantages, recognition and responsibility. Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, or when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor. Registering here is very simple. You can go to our web page, www.st-als.org, look under “Parish Registration,” and fill out the needed information. You can come into the office and fill out a registration form. Forms are also available in the back of the church. If your time is limited, you can take the form home and return it via the collection basket on Sundays or mail it to the office. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. We accept anyone who wants to share in the life of our parish regardless of where they live. Remember that you need to be a registered parishioner to partake in all the services that St. Alphonsus offers. Why not sign up? You are surely welcome.
THOUGHTS The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.
