Pentecost This weekend we celebrate the feast of Pentecost and it marks the end of the Easter season. It also commemorates the moment when the Disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and were inspired to go out and preach the Good News to people in various lands who spoke different languages. We pray that the Holy Spirit guides all of us as individuals, as families and as communities so that we can support one another on our journey of life. End of School Events Even though our world is still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, our St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School was pretty busy with a number of different events for its final week. Earlier in the week, on Monday, May 18th and Tuesday, May 19th our Pre-School and Kindergarten students participated in their “Step Up” prayer service in the school parking lot. On Friday, May 22nd, our 2nd Graders participated in our annual “May Crowning” prayer service with songs and prayers. On Thursday, May 21st, our 8th Graders participated in a graduation ceremony in the school parking lot in which they remained near their family cars/SUVs, wore their caps & gowns, received their diplomas, and took photos with their families. We pray for our young men and women after concluding their journey at our St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick Catholic School. On behalf of Fr. Kurt Boras, Pastor of St. Patrick Church, I would like to thank our St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick Principal, Robert Priest, our interim Principal, Jacki Chiaramonte, our teachers and staff for their dedication and hard work. We also pray for all of our elementary, high school and college graduates as they begin a new chapter of their journey in life. Gradual Re-Opening Plan for St. Alphonsus Church As you may have heard on the news, Cardinal Cupich has announced that he is ready to begin the first phases of reopening the Catholic Churches of the Archdiocese of Chicago on a limited basis. These first phases are for the celebration of the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Funerals and Matrimony. However, those sacraments are limited to only 10 people in the church building and there are a number of guidelines. We are in the process of properly forming and preparing a Parish Re-Opening Leadership Team to organize our efforts. If you would like to assist in the re-opening process, please check out the information page in our bulletin. Renew My Church As I mentioned in previous Pastor Columns, even though we are in the middle of dealing with the challenges imposed by the global pandemic, decisions about the structure for the new parish have to be made. As you may have read in the last few weeks, our new parish name will be decided by Cardinal Cupich in the next few months. The next step that we have to focus on is the Mass Schedule for the new parish. A number of factors will help decide the Mass Schedule including the number of attendees at each Mass, the number of volunteer ministers and the availability of priests to celebrate Mass. Needless to say, the Mass Schedule for the new parish will be presented in a different fashion, especially dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Please be patient as we try to serve the new parish in the best way possible.

Pentecost Sunday 3 May 31, 2020

Welcome Guests and Visitors. . . We’re so glad that you’re here and invite you to join us in thanksgiving for God’s action in our lives. Our goal is to provide a spiritual home where all are welcome, where the healing, reconciling, liberating love of God flows through us to all people. In this way, we believe that the Church is the sacrament of God’s saving presence in the world.

“Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult (the Mass does not end until the final blessing).

Worship reverently enough not to distract. Dress proudly enough not to offend.”

Dear St. Alphonsus Parishioners, I pray that you and your loved ones are healthy. As you may have seen in the news or on our parish website, Cardinal Cupich recently shared a multi-phased plan for reopening churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Specifically, Phase I allows for parishes to reopen for Baptisms, Reconciliation, Weddings and Funerals with a limit of 10 attendees. Phase 1A allows for parishes to possibly reopen for private prayer or adoration with a limit of 10 attendees. Phase II allows for reopening for weekday and weekend Masses for larger groups depending on the guidelines from the state and the capacity of the church building. Our St. Alphonsus Reopening Plan It is important for everyone to understand that our efforts will prioritize the safety and well-being of all while maintaining reverence for the sacraments and liturgical practices. I am assembling a Parish Reopening Leadership Team to lead our efforts. Together, we will attend required training from the Archdiocese to ensure that our parish reopening plan conforms to the guidelines developed by the Archdiocese in collaboration with civil and healthcare authorities. We will also receive a starter kit of protective and cleaning supplies, as well as guidance on purchasing/maintaining supplies on an ongoing basis. Timing for Our Reopening As I mentioned, the Parish Reopening Leadership Team members and I will undergo required training. Once we complete the training, we will need to complete the reopening certification process to be approved by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Following our training and certification approval, we will only open our church once the Reopening Leadership Team and I feel confident that we are totally prepared for the celebration of the sacraments in a safe environment. Volunteers Needed We will need volunteers to assist with various aspects of our parish reopening plan. However, leadership team members and volunteers must not be part of a “vulnerable population” (that is, not over the age of 65; no underlying medical condition such as diabetes; lung disease; undergoing cancer treatment, etc.). I ask that those who are willing to assist are younger than 65 years of age and are healthy (with no underlying health conditions) to consider assisting with one of three reopening teams: Set-up team

Sample duties include: ensuring that all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and physically propped open prior to attendees’ arrival/departure, etc.

Greeting team Sample duties include: assisting in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church; making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask and are reminded not to enter if ill; directing people to appropriate seating/waiting areas; etc.

Cleaning team Sample duties include: maintaining and cleaning essential and trafficked areas of the church before and after celebrations. Masks and gloves will be provided (if you do not have your own) and approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.

The Parish Reopening Leadership Team and I will make sure that all volunteers are properly trained. If you are able and willing to volunteer, please call the Parish Office at (630) 257-2414 or send us a message at [email protected]. May God grant you peace during this difficult time and we pray that we will soon gather together to celebrate our faith as a community of believers! Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Brian Ardagh

CONFIRMATION & FIRST COMMUNION As of May 26th, we have no news related to plans on celebrating these sacraments.

We will send email blasts as soon as we get information.

PENTECOST – HOW CAN WE CELEBRATE IT AS A FAMILY? The Feast of Pentecost celebrates a big moment in the life of the Church… When the Apostles were empowered by the Holy Spirit to go out and create disciples and form the Church. The Sacrament of Confirmation has been described as a “personal Pentecost” because our young people have an encounter with the Holy Spirit to empower them to live their lives as disciples of Christ in his Church. This past week, our confirmandi were invited to take part in a 9-day online retreat entitled “Waiting for the Spirit.” We hope that the experience was fruitful for them. Following are some suggestions on ways that you can make the Feast of Pentecost fruitful for your family. • Teach your kids a prayer to the Holy Spirit. Here is a simple prayer to try: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of this your faithful family and enkindle in us the fire of your love. Just as you strengthened your apostles, please strengthen us to live as your disciples. Amen. • Wear red. When you participate in the Mass on TV, you can make it a special celebration by joining the presider in wearing red…which represents the flames that descended on the disciples of Jesus at the first Pentecost. • Fly a kite, make a windsock, play with balloons. Little kids will enjoy making a tradition of flying kites or making Spirit-themed windsocks on Pentecost. Blow up red & white balloons and play a balloon-catch game or string them together to make a symbol of the Holy Spirit. • Dinner question: What gifts would you ask the Holy Spirit for? Over dinner, ask your older kids and teens: What gifts would you ask the Holy Spirit for? The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord (Catechism 1831). What fruits of the Holy Spirit are most “abundant” in our family? The fruits of the Holy Spirit are charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity(Catechism 1832).

MASS & ME GOSPEL REFLECTION QUESTIONS John 20:19-23: In John’s Gospel the disciples are hiding behind locked doors because of fear of their enemies. When Jesus comes, they are calmed. He gives them the power to give peace to others by forgiving their sins. • The Holy Spirit is like the wind. Wind changes things. What needs changing — in you, in your family, in the world? • Write a family prayer to the Holy Spirit asking for the courage to make changes. • What do you think Jesus is sending you to do at this time in your life? • Pentecost has been called the birthday of the Church. How do you think we should celebrate it?

PRAYER IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC O God of compassion,

your people are anxious in this time of pandemic.

Send your Holy Spirit among us to dispel our fears.

We cry out to you in our confusion; comfort us in our affliction.

Grant our leaders wisdom to guide us. Strengthen and sustain those who are ill,

and be with those who care for them. Help us to travel this road

in solidarity with our neighbors, with our eyes fixed on the salvation

promised us through the death and resurrection

of your Son, who is Lord forever and

ever. Amen.

Pentecost Sunday 8 May 31, 2020

Readings for A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles - Acts 2:1–11 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”

Responsorial Psalm - Ps 104:1, 24, 29–30, 31, 34 R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! How manifold are your works, O LORD! the earth is full of your creatures; R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in his works! Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the LORD. R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

A reading from the Corinthians - 1 Cor 12:3b–7, 12–13 Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John - Jn 20:19–23 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Lemont Clergy Offers Assistance

The Lemont Christian Churches are teaming up to support the needs of our Lemont neighbors. We already have supported our families in need of food assistance through the Lemont Food Pantries. As of now, because of safety concerns, the Lemont Food Pantries are only accepting financial donations. If you would like to donate to the Lemont Food Pantries, you may donate directly to them or drop off a donation at our St. Alphonsus Parish Office. The Lemont Clergy Association also realizes that some families are now in need of financial assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are in need of financial support at this time, you can reach out by emailing [email protected]. If you are able to financially support this fund, please make a donation designated to "Lemont Support”.
