Wikipedia:
A smart device is an electronic device, generally connected to other devices or networks via different wireless protocols such as Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi, LiFi, 3G, etc., that can operate to some extent interactively and autonomously.

Pushing computation out: But also: • Aggregation portals • Citizen science projects
Recap: Eurostat reference architecture
5
Different options: • Direct access: direct from the device • Pushing computation out: indirect (aggregated) data
from device manufacturer • Aggregation portal: indirect from portals where device
manufacturers publishe (aggregated) data • Citizen science: indirect from an open data citizen
science portal
Forseeable types of data access

22 Jan 2019: EU Directive on Open Data and re-use of public sector information: • Extends scope to water, energy,
transport and postal services sectors and those acting as public service operators for the transport of passengers by rail, road, air or maritime carriers
• dynamic data (such as data generated by sensors) will be available for re-use immediately after collection
Directive on public sector data
7
• Smartphones • Smart home devices
speakers, TVs, thermostats, kitchen, smoke/AQ, garden, security, pets • Smart devices for healthcare
diagnosis, glucose, blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen level, pulse, alcohol, asthma, inhalers, bioscarf, smart pills
• Smart devices for fitness jogging, cycling, heart rate, oxygen, sleep, brain, diets
• Smart devices for transport traffic lights, cameras, counters, vehicles, bike sharing
• Smart devices for travel suitcase, tracking, transport cards, hotspots
• Other smart devices: waste, IO-link
The long list so far
8
• Data potential: energy use • Widely used • Increasingly connected wifi and M2M, AI driven
works with private assistents, IFTTT • Privacy sensitivity: medium • Private sector data, API? Closed/open?
Home/Smart thermostats

Health and Diagnosis
• Data potential: Health determinants lifestyles, Alcohol consumption statistics, cardiovascular diseases statistics, population ageing, amenable and preventable death statistics
• Every device usage is very selective • Privacy sensitivity: High • Mode of usage for Statistics:
• Must be used with other sources to generate a global picture – only the alcohol consumption track could be relevant on its own

Health and Treatment
SmartInhaler ID-CAP by Etect RX Dexcom G6 CGM
• Data potential: respiratory diseases statistics, population ageing, amenable and preventable death statistics
• Every device usage is very selective • Privacy sensitivity: High • Mode of usage for Statistics:
• Must be used with other sources to generate a global picture – only the smartInhalers could be relevant on its own
11
• Data potential: time use, quality of life, leisure and social interactions indicators, overweight and obesity statistics, fruit and vegetable consumption statistics
• The Fitness devices are more widely used then the dietary • Most popular applications for fitness: Strava, Endomondo, Garmin Connect,
MapMyRide, TrainingPeaks, Runkeeper, Runtastic, PolarFlow • Privacy sensitivity: medium • Private sector data, API? Closed/open?
Fitness and Well Being
12
• Mode of usage for Statistics: • Can constitute a direct indicator - example: for
sports indicators • Must be used with other sources - example: for
leisure interaction indicators

13
• Data potential: traffic/mobility statistics • Widely used • Features: traffic management, road safety • Privacy sensitivity: medium • Public sector data, API? Closed/open?
Transport/Smart detection cameras
Speed camera with ANPR
14
• Data potential: mobility statistics/ people’s behaviour • Spread: selective • Privacy sensitivity: low • Public sector data, API? Closed/open?
Transport/Smart passengers counter
15
• Data potential: mobility/tourism statistics • Widely used • Privacy sensitivity: medium • Public sector or private sector data, API? Closed/open?
Travel/Smart transport cards
16
• Smart devices versus IOT? • Formatting… • What literature is used? • Combine healthcare with health and fitness? • Two main questions:
• What can it do and what data comes out? • Is the data of use for statistical portfolio?
• Inspirational list also for sensors project • Nice out of the box work • …

Replacement strategy: • Smart devices > Data > Device Base Units > Wrangling
and Processing > Current Statistical Units > Modeling and Interpretation
=> Creative Strategy • Smart devices > Data > Wrangling and Processing >
Modeling and Interpretation > Developing new products
Break the chain – new thinking
18
• Data potential for official statistics 1 (less potential) – 5 (large potential)
• Forseeable types of data access direct / pushing computation out / aggregation portal / citizen science
• Privacy issues low / medium / high
• Market homogeneity few players / regular / many players
• Public/private sector data public / private / public and private
Use new thinking to score the long list
