Cell Types
Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes Animal Cell vs. Plant Cell
Essential Questions (Write on left page)
• What are the similarities and differences in varied cell types?
• How does cell structure fit cell function?
Prokaryotic Cell vs. Eukaryotic Cell Prokaryote Cell• No organelles (small
structures inside cells that do specific jobs)
• No Nucleus (has DNA) • Very Small • Single celled organisms. • Ex) Bacteria
Eukaryote Cells
• Have organelles • Have a nucleus • Very large • Can form multicellular
organisms. !• Ex) Plants, Animals,
Fungi and Protists
Plant Cells – have 3 organelles that are not found in animal cells.
• Plants have: - Chloroplasts - Cell Walls - large Vacuole.
Specialized Cells
• Systems of specialized cells help an organism perform the essential functions of life.
Specialized Structure Fits Function
• Nerve Cell – Long thin branches
• Sends/Receives info to other cells all over the body
Specialized Structure Fits Function
• Skin cell – flat, generally circular
• Covering larger areas of the body to provide protection
Specialized Structure Fits Function• Muscle cells – oval,
elongated, lots of mitochondria
• Pull and push other cells and structures of the body
Cell Differentiation
• Differentiation: Cells developing into different cell types – DNA determines what the cell will be
Notes Summary & BrainworkRight Page
The two basic cell types are ________ and _______. Prokaryotic cells are different than Eukaryotic cells because _______________________. Cells are specialized because ________________. Cells become specialized by going through a process called __________.
Left page• Answer the essential
questions – What are the similarities and
differences in varied cell types (Eukaryote & prokaryote, plant & animal)?
– How does cell structure fit cell function?
!*You may do this by putting them
in venn diagrams if you wish.
