An introduction to---Our Lady Africa Group (Catholic

    Charistimatic Renewal)

Who and What are we? Our name says it all:

    PRAYER GROUP

By prayer we mean primarily prayer of praise and thanks to God. As one of Our

songs puts it ,We come together to sing Gods praise-alleluia! .This is our

basic purpose-as indeed it is for every human who ,in the words of St. Ignatius

Loyola, is created to praise ,reverence, and serve God our Lord. This is also the

primary purpose of the great central act of our religion, the Eucharistic Liturgy, this

sacrifice of praise (Roman Canon). Just as Christians generally do on Sundays, wemeet once a week to celebrate the work of our salvation, not by getting drunk with

bear, but filled with the Spirit, addressing one another with psalms and hymns and

spiritual songs, sing and making melody to the Lord with all your hearts, always and

in everything giving thanks to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

    (Eph.5:18)

From this basic function of regular communal praise and thanks giving, we find that

the Lords knits us together into Christian community of Love and service of one

another and of the world in which we live. Of high importance in our group is ourprayer ministry, which includes praying with or over those who come to seek

spiritual or physical or inner (emotional) healing at our hands. Declare your sins to

one another and pray for one another, that you may find healing.(James 5:16)

In our fellowship in-the-Lord, we support one another in many other ways; in

simple friendship, in instruction and counsel, in encouragement and brotherly

correction if needed be in the Holy Spirit, in sincere love, with the message of

truth and the power of God (2Cor.6:6)

    CHARISTIMATIC

In our prayer together and in our personal lives, we expressly seek the gifts (In

Greek, charismata) that the father has lavished upon His people through the

reconciliation affected by the Blood of Jesus Christ. The basic gift is the Holy spirit,

sent by Jesus Christ from the Father as His first Gift to those who believe, to

complete His work on earth and bring us the fullness of Grace .As the Spirit

Himself the very personification of divine love, this first and fundamental Gift to usis, in effect, the love of God poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who

has been given to us (Rom 5:5),that same love (Greek, agape) which St. Paul

describes so beautifully in 1 Cor.13

Along with this basic gift of love, the fruits of which ought to become apparent in

our everyday lives (Gal.5:22),there are special gifts of charisms which the Spirit

bestows not so much for ones own spiritual growth as for the growth, the

strengthening, and the healing of the community. The best list of such gifts is found

in 1 Cor.12:7.but there are other charism mentioned elsewhere in the New

Testament that are given to some to one person, some to another according to the

need. To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common

good..But it is one and the same Spirit who produces all these gifts, distributing

them to each as he wills (Cor.7:11).As Charistimatic Christians, we take to heart

Pauls injunction to seek eagerly after love; and set your hearts on the spiritual

gifts above all, the gift of prophecy (1Cor.14:1)
