About the Demo
l Extended Analytics is 11.1.2.3l Essbase Analytics Link is 11.1.2.2 (there is not 11.1.2.3…yet)
l To ignore HFM, but still get the data.l HFM licenses are not cheap.l The use of Essbase reduces load on the HFM server.
l Planning and Essbase applications need actual data.
Why are we doing this?
l HFM and Essbase store data completely differently.
l HFM applies eliminations and adjustments at upper levels.
l Meta-Data is difficult without Meta-Data management.
Why is this so difficult?
l Relational extract of HFM data into a star schema.
l Included with any HFM license.l Managed via Workspace.l Three Extraction Types:● Standard● Essbase● Data Warehouse
What is Extended Analytics?
l Meta-Data is virtually useless.l Automation can require use of the API or Star Command Center.
l Requires a relational database and possible a DBA.
Extended Analytics Challenges
l EA is definitely free.l EA just works.l If you are on 11.1.2.3…its actually supported.l Everyone already uses it anyway, so if you have questions, there are plenty of answers out there.
l While a DBA may be necessary up front, generally once the build is complete, maintenance is easy.
Extended Analytics Benefits
l Essbase Analytics Link provides several mechanisms for extracting data from HFM● Transparent Essbase Partition● Replicated Essbase Partition● RDBMS Data Extract
l Not just basic extraction, but mapping and translation● Mapping tables in data store
What is Essbase Analytics Link?
l Meta-Data is less useless, but still not great.l May still require a relational database and possibly a DBA.
l Automation options require PowerShell scripting.
l EAL is definitely not free.l EAL is not technically supported on 11.1.2.3…yet.
Essbase Analytics Link Challenges
l Can be easily administered by any Essbase admin.
l Can be as simple or as complex as you would like.
l Excellent at simple replication of HFM.
Essbase Analytics Link Benefits
l Configure a template.l Select a DSN.l Perform the extract.
EA – Getting Data out of HFM
l Multiple extracts● Base Data● Eliminations● Additional top-sides
EA – Getting upper levels out of HFM
l Data● Load rules with views into the HFM extract.● Stub members for upper level data like eliminations or top-side adjustments.
l Meta-Data● DRM is preferred.● EPMA is a back-up.● Parent-Child query back to the extract.
EA – Getting data into Essbase
l Transparent Partitions● Great if you just need to replicate HFM functionality● Provides near real-time updates of data on an easy to modify interval
● Not so great if you need to integrate the HFM data with anything else
EAL - Ways to Extract Data
l Replicated Partitions● Great if you need the data to physically live in Essbase
● Great for Essbase admins that don’t have access to a relational database or the knowledge necessary to maintain one
● Won’t provide real-time updates as quickly● Requires more complex scripts for scheduling (powershell)
EAL - Ways to Extract Data
l Relational Database● Great if you need to move the data to another Essbase database or another type of source altogether
● Again, won’t provide real-time updates as quickly● Again, requires more complex scripts for scheduling● Requires an additional RDBMS and the knowledge to use one
EAL - Ways to Extract Data
l Transparent partitions won’t really work for thisl Replicated partitions are great for Essbase-savvy users● Calc script exports are your friend
l Relational extracts are great for SQL-savvy users
l Data regions are very important
EAL - Integrating HFM Data
l Open discussion.
So Which Should I Pick?
