A warm regards sending by me to the scholarship’s committee who will go to read my essays. My name is Debra Hii Lu Ming, a 21 years old girl from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. I am having my semester 4 of Diploma in nursing course now. I graduated from independent Chinese school and I have both SPM and Unified Examination certificate of independent Chinese schools. My school has trained me the ability to talk trilingual ( Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Cina and English as well). I’ve been chosen as class monitor for 3 years during my secondary school periods. I would like to apply for the scholarship of Yayasan Sime Darby.

First and foremost, I would like to share about the reason I chosen nursing as my future carrier. Honestly, before this, nursing is not the first choice for me after I graduated from secondary school. I think my sister, Eva, who is also studying nursing course now has inspired me a lot as she is the one who wanted to become a nurse. During that time, I refused to become a nurse and even discourage my sister to become a nurse as I think nurses’ job was only cleaning the urine or feces of the patients, assists doctors or administer drugs and blood until I watched a news.

The news is about the earthquake disaster happened at China during 2008. I saw there are so many victims that need to be help, rescue and waiting for treatment in television news but yet there’s not enough of medical team during that time and rehabilitation time for those victims. And that’s the time I have realized that I have the motive to join nursing, I want to become one of the medical team to help in it. Besides this, my hometown, Sabah has lots of people who live in rural areas that lack of medical cares which I found it out when I went for a mission trip to visit those live in rural areas. This is one of the reasons which have pushed me further to choose nursing.

In my religion view, as a Christian, Bible tells us not to love or care others with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. My family, church members and my prayer to God has made me more ensure that I should choose nursing.

Next, I will list out few reasons why I deserve for this scholarship. I’m the eldest for 6 siblings which make me more responsible for what I

have done and what I’m going to do. Same goes to my study, I will try my best to fulfill all the assignments that given by tutors or clinical instructors or even doctors and request from patients. Meanwhile, although I’m not as outstanding as others top students but I’m trying my best to fulfill my objective and tasks for each semester or as a student.

I used to be a serious person when I’m doing something serious but after works or besides works, I’m quite friendly person indeed. In my principle in nursing, I think I have the motive of Sime Darby Medical Centre which is ‘we care, we serve’ while my principle is ‘I care, I serve and I do’. I won’t fix my future carrier only in one specific field now as I think nursing is a wide field for me to explore it. Thus, if I finished my diploma, I won’t stop at there but will prefer to further my knowledge and study if I have the chances to do so.

By the way, I’ve been lost in this carrier, I keep asking myself am I really belong to nursing, but thanks to tutors and clinical instructors as they will always encourage us and give us a lots of advices and brainstorm to think deeply when we’re facing problems. They make me realized that I should not leave the problems aside but challenge it. Don’t be afraid of what we going to do but prepared well of ourselves to face it. (Especially during posting time at hospital, we need to apply our theory into practical but my practical skills are quite weak but I won’t give it up).

Responsible, leadership, ability to talk trilingual, willpower to improve myself, serious but friendly. These are the few reasons that I think why I deserve for this scholarship.

Lastly, nursing has let me know more about the nursing cares for people and the harmful diseases. When my family or friends having any illness, I’m able to give some health educations for them based on the knowledge I’ve learned and I very proud of it. Undeniably, nursing is the great job for me. Do forgive me if I have written any inappropriate words or meanings and thank you for reading my essays.
