    Essay on Orwell

    ~ 1 ~

A strong essay persuades us to consider a new vision of the world.

Show how this statement resonates with a response to at least two essays set for study.

Different essays have been written for different purposes. However, the essays which provide an

influence to the readers are certainly powerful. Such essays offer an idea of what the future world

could be if they were to follow the regulations suggested. George Orwells various essays have

successfully discussed any issues in our current society and hence, begins to persuade us to consider

his vision of the world. Two such essays written by Orwell, Politics and the English Language and

The Sporting Spirit, conveys his ideas of the problems that should be changed. The post-World

War II society has caused questions about the purpose of our culture and created doubts about

whether or not society is being provided with the truth.

The truths in society have started to become concealed and only small pieces of information are

being distributed. Whether it is something as simple as the facts of trivial sport games or the hiding

of information in the news about political events, the truth has become obscured and the actual

reality is unknown. Politics and the English Language (1946) has addressed the masking of the

truth through the misuse of language, such as the overcomplicating of structures or the excessive

use of hackneyed phrases. Through the use of asyndeton, ring the changes on, take up the cudgels

for, toe the line , swan song, hotbed, Orwell has shown how ridiculous some of the other authors

write. It is evident that these metaphors are only used because they are of orthodox, but provide

almost no meaning at all. As a result, the authors using such literary techniques do not provide any

truth behind their text, as it is not used appropriately. Orwell uses effective similes and metaphors

such as tacked together like the sections of a prefabricated hen-houseand language is a natural

growth and not an instrument which we shape for our own purposes, as evidence to prove the

point that Orwell is arguing for. The ideas covered in Politics and the English Language make the

audience aware of the actual truths, of which that they are not being provided with the truth but

    only a fraction of it.

Similarly in The Sporting Spirit (1946), Orwell complains about the lack of truth that is being given

to the society regarding something as insignificant as a sports game. Orwell distances himself from

the truth by referring to information provided by others, in the third person, I am told by someone

who was there, and The Glasgow match, somewhere else informs me, . By doing this, Orwell

shows how little of the facts that are actually known by the public. At the same time, Orwell uses

many assertions, such as people saying that sport creates goodwill, to reinforce how little the

society knows. According to Orwell, people believed that the sports between countries would spark

connections to be regrown, however Orwell proves that it creates more bad than good. There are

not many differences in Orwells essays regarding the lacking truth being revealed to the rest of the

world. Politics and the English Language discusses the media which cover up the truths while The

Sporting Spirit reveals the effects of the deceits being transferred. Orwell wants the truth, and only

the truth to be given to society, language is aninstrument for expressing and not for concealing or

preventing thought, and that is why Orwells essays are strong.

The culture in the society of the time had been thought to be declining, as there has been a shifting

focus for the needs of the people. The changing culture is visible in the language and the interests of

society, but Orwell questions this and wants the nation to keep pure in its original, pure culture.

Politics and the English Languageaddresses the changing uses of the English language and how

each instance will continue wear away at the pure language. The comparison of a paragraph written

by Ecclesiastes, I returned, and saw under the sun time and chance happeneth, with a modern

adaptation of it, Objective consideration of must invariably be taken into account, it is visible how

the language has changed. The prior paragraph is much simpler to understand as it contains diction

which is commonly used, however the latter paragraph has much more complicated language which

many would not understand. Orwell describes the choice of words by authors by the metaphor,

catalogue of swindles and perversions, which implies that all that is written is only to fill space and

not actually describe in detail. Through this text, Orwell shows how unnecessary the language being

used is. Prior to this language was used as a source of information, something that was reliable but

now, its purpose has become to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an

appearance of solidity to pure wind.

Also, in The Sporting Spiritthe purpose of sporting events and its effects on society have been

challenged. Orwell mocks the sporting events, implying that all sport does is create animosities

between countries, And how could it be otherwise?. By doing this, he attacks the culture of sports

and the detrimental effects it has on societies. The use of logical fallacy, People want to see one

side on top and the other side humiliated, shows that the people themselves are forcing the

degrading nature of sporting culture. They encourage the aggressive nature between countries

which occurs as a result of their nationalistic views, or as Orwell describes it, it is war minus the

shooting. Through these texts, Orwell shows that the purpose of culture has started to become less

meaningful, only being upheld because the people are arrogant. Politics and the English Language

talks about the deterioration of the language, whilst The Sporting Spirit discusses the decline in

sports, but both still resonate Orwells belief that the culture in society has become changed for the

    worse.

The views of the world that Orwell provides tell the reader to consider the points and look for a

different future. He argues against the current society, managing to persuade the reader to

contemplate for the ideas that he provides. Orwell exposes to the readers that they are being

hidden from the truth, making them almost demand for a change to happen. He also reveals how

arrogant people can become when it comes to something which should be friendly. In all, by

pointing out the flaws in society Orwell manages to create strong essays which can persuade the

readers to contemplate a new vision of the world.
