Celebrating Wilbur Heldby Nancy Raabe

1

On August 20, 2014, composer and organist Wilbur Held marks his 100th birthday. The signs point to more ahead. Held remains cheerful and is in good health; his sense of humor is as sharp as ever; and he gets around fine, which he attributes in large part to a half-hour workout on the step machine every morning. “It’s good because the arms go this way and the legs go that way, so it gets at both legs and arms,” he says. “I don’t try to kill myself. The weight is on a scale of 0 to 10 and I’m usually at 6 or 7.”2

In our age of increased longevity, turning 100 is not unheard of. But how many continue to practice their art at that age? Held’s newest collection for MorningStar, New Every Morning (MSM-10-618), was published in early 2014 and features quintessentially clean, elegant settings of six morning hymns. He is a regular contributor to Concordia Publish-ing House’s ongoing Hymn Prelude Library. And he can often be found at the organ at the Claremont Manor, where he has resided for many years since retiring to Southern California, either practicing, playing for the Wednesday night Vespers service, or preparing for a memorial service. Of the continuum of life in that gracious retirement community, it has often been said that “first you go to the Care Center [assisted living], and then Wilbur gets you.”

Arguably, no composer of our age has done more for the hardworking church organist who, week in and week out, must find quality repertoire to suit specific seasons, occasions and needs. “His works are indispensable to the church organist,” affirms Held’s longtime friend Maxine Brechbiel, who keeps Held’s personal catalog of works up to date. “There is always something perfect to capture the spirit of each season in the liturgical year.”3

Others concur. “Wilbur has a true gift for writing music that is attractive, relevant, technically accessible yet musically fulfilling,” said organist James Hildreth, who helped organize a major celebration of Held’s music in Columbus, Ohio, in 2007 and conducted an interview with Held on that occasion. “The organist can always find something from Wilbur’s output that will meet the current liturgical need without requiring a great amount of preparation time.”4

Many of Held’s collections are organized around times of the church year or calendar seasons. Others are centered in specific genres, from funerals and memorials to children’s hymns, a particular scripture focus (The Lord Is My Shepherd: Six Hymn Settings on Psalm 23, MorningStar MSM-10-420; 1999), and folk-based sources such as Welsh hymn tunes (two volumes of Those Wonderful Welsh, MorningStar MSM-10-841; 1991, and MSM-10-842; 1992) and Shaker melo-dies (Shaker Tunes for Organ, MorningStar MSM-10-869; 1998). Ideas often come to him in unexpected ways. He got the idea for the Shaker collection, for example, from a chorister at Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbus, Ohio, where he served as organist and choirmaster for many years. “After I came out here [to Southern California], a fellow in my choir who was a little crazy but intelligent in many ways had picked up a book of Shaker tunes in a secondhand store. He sent it to me as a little gift. I was fascinated by the tunes. They do have a different character.”5

Nonetheless, Held is quick to acknowledge that about half of what he writes goes into the wastepaper basket. Every note that makes it into print, like every word he speaks, is carefully considered. “It’s a lot of trial and error,” he admits.6

Hallmarks of Held’s musical style include a harmonic language that reaches back across centuries in its incorporation of fourths and fifths but is also distinctively contemporary; a reverence for the integrity of the hymn tune upon which a setting is based, and the ability to envision it from a variety of perspectives; a deep instinct for lyricism; a gentle playful-ness; the utter absence of sentimentality; and the abiding quality of proclamation. We find the truths of God in Christ revealed to us in the shape of a line, in the content of a harmonic progression, and in the evolution of an idea across a work. In these ways the music is always bearing witness to some aspect of the Gospel. In the popular “Christ Is Alive! Let Christians Sing,” for example (included in the collection Thine the Glory: Accessible Organ Music for Lent and Easter,

1. Nancy Raabe came to know Held well over the past decade during frequent visits to The Claremont Manor, where her mother also resided.2.
