A computer scan is an important part o any antivirus solution.It is used to perorm a scan o the les and olders on your computers disks.

This section contains important inormation about the program updates.It is vitally important or the program to update regularly to provide the maximum level o protection against malware threats.

The ESET Smart Security setup options allow you to adjust the protection levels o your computer.

1. Installation

Beore beginning installation, please close all runningprograms. Since ESET Smart Security contains antivirusand rewall components, we strongly recommend thatyou remove any other antivirus programs or rewallyou might have installed on your computer to preventmutual conicts. You do not need to disable or removethe Windows rewall in Windows XP or Vista, as thisis automatically handled by the ESET Smart Securityinstaller. To take ull advantage o the ESET Smart Securitysystem, you will need an Internet connection during theinstallation process.

You can install ESET Smart Security rom an installation CDor rom a le that you download rom the ESET website:www.eset.com.

1.2. Launching the installation

To launch the installer wizard, either do one o the ollowing:

I you install rom the installation CD, insert the CDinto the CD-ROM drive and the installation should

automatically begin. I you install rom a downloaded le, double-click thele you downloaded to launch the installer.

Ater launching the installer and accepting the licenseagreement, the installer will ofer two types o installation.

Typical the most important parameters will becongured during installation. These will be pre-setto their recommended settings. This mode providescomprehensive protection and is suitable or mostusers.

Custom enables conguration o all advancedparameters during installation.

This guide describes a typical installation.

1.3. Username and Password or updating the program

It is critical that you enter your Username and the

Password or ESET Smart Security automatic updates tounction. I you decide to set the update parameters later,we strongly recommend doing so immediately ater theinstallation is complete, to ensure that your protectionremains current.

1.4. ThreatSense.Net

ThreatSense.Net plays an important role in reporting

proactively captured malware to provide you withbetter protection. We recommend that you leave theThreatSense.Net Early Warning System enabled.

1.5. Detection o potentially unwanted applications

Since some potentially unwanted applications are usedlegitimately, and might not necessarily pose a security risk,the users consent is required to enable detection. Selectthis option i you want to block these types o applications.

1.6. Completing the installation

Once ESET Smart Security has been congured, startthe nal installation by clicking the Install button. Theinstallation progress will be indicated by a progress bar.Ater installation is complete, ESET Smart Security willbe started automatically.A computer restart is not normallyrequired, so you can continue working while ESET SmartSecurity runs in the background, protecting your computerrom malware threats.

Click Next to proceed to the next step.

2. Trusted Zone setup

Ater the installation is complete and a networkconnection is detected, a window allowing you tocongure a trusted zone will appear. The window showsyour computers local subnet (local network). Theseoptions only afect the visibility o your computer in thelocal network, not the Internet. There are two accessmodes available:

Strict protection select this option i you do not wantto share les and olders on your computer and wantyour computer to be invisible to other users on thesame network. This setting is recommended or userswho connect their computer directly to a cable or DSLmodem or use a wireless connection.

Allow sharing select this option i you want to be ableto share les and olders on your computer with otherson the same network. This setting is recommended ortrusted local home or oce networks.

3. Starting ESET Smart Security

ESET Smart Security starts protecting your computerimmediately ater installation. You do not have to start theprogram to activate it. However, at any time you may openESET Smart Security to check your protection status or toperorm various scanning and maintenance tasks.

To open the ESET Smart Security user interace, do one oollowing:

Double-click on the ESET Smart Security icon locatedin the Windows notication area (System tray)

On the Windows taskbar clickStart > All Programs > ESET> ESET Smart Security > ESET Smart Security

A color change in this icon indicates a possible problemwith ESET Smart Security.

I your license has expired and you have received a newUser name and Password ater purchasing a renewal (oryou did not enter them during installation), enter the newUser name and Password in the update setup window.This step is critical in order to receive updates so that yourcomputer is continually protected against newly emergingthreats.

In the let pane o the ESET Smart Security screen, selectSetup and then click Enter User name and Password onthe right.

Enter the data you received in the License details

window and click OK to conrm. Your Username and

Password are both case sensitive. Enter them exactly asthey appear. Copying and pasting rom the license email isrecommended.

4.1. Update

By deault, ESET Smart Security retrieves updatesautomatically. However, i you did not enter your Username and Password during installation, then no automaticupdate would have occcured. We recommend perormingthe update manually as ollows:

Select Update in the let pane o the main ESET SmartSecurity screen

Click Update virus signature database

5. Computer scanning

Ater successul installation and update, we recommendthat you perorm a complete computer scan to check orthreats. To do this, click Computer scan in the main ESETSmart Security screen and select Standard scan. Scanningo all local hard drives will begin. As long as the scancontinues, the status window shows the progress bar, aswell as the current statistics about scanned and inectedles ound. I a threat is detected, ESET Smart Securityquarantines the le and displays an alert in the systemtray area. You should be able to continue working normallyduring the scan.

The update module will connect to the Internet, contact anavailable ESET update server and download digitally signedupdate les. These les contain the most recent malwaresignatures and new denitions or advanced heuristics andother program modules.

As soon as a newer update has been installed, ESET SmartSecurity displays a notication in the system tray areashowing the version number o the installed virus signaturedatabase.

Note: You only need to perorm a manual update once.Aterwards, ESET Smart Security will download the updateles automatically.

ESET Smart Security inorms you about the statuso antivirus protection by means o the ollowing controls:1. The system tray icon indicates activation or

deactivation o the real-time le system protection orrewall by changing color according to the status.

2. A detailed report in the Protection status window.I a particular module is disabled, its name will be displayedalong with a link to enable it in the Protection statuspanel. Protection status is indicated by 3 colors:

1. blue (recommended) Antivirus protection is ullyunctional and your computer is protected against threats

as well as network attacks. In this mode, all modules areenabled and the virus signature database is current.

2. yellow Real-time le system protection is enabled,but at least one o the ollowing events has occurred: the rewall is blocking all network trac an update has ailed (e.g., no Internet connection was

detected, your license has expired, invalid User name orPassword is entered in the update setup, etc.)

3. red Real-time fle system protection or thefrewall is disabled. Since these modules are vital partso your computers protection, we recommend enablingthe inactive module immediately!

ESET Customer Care representatives are ready to assistyou in resolving potential problems. However, beore

contacting Customer Care, we strongly recommend thatyou rst search or a solution on the ESET website. Thisshould help you resolve the problem within a matter ominutes.

6. Protection status indication

A window will appear where you can enter your contactinormation, case type, case issue, as well as yourspecic question or issue. Correctly lling in the contactinormation is crucial or receiving a prompt response to

your question.

In the Subject eld, enter a concise description o the issueor question. Next, type in as detailed a description o theissue as possible in the Question or issue description eld.


7.1 Submitting a Customer Care support request

In the event o a problem, contact ESET Customer Careusing the support request orm integrated in the program.

In the Help and support section, select Customer Caresupport request.

In addition to the issue description, ESET Smart Securityalso supports submission o other important inormationthat can help pinpoint the problem. We stronglyrecommend you leave all options selected. To view the

inormation submitted beore it is sent to ESET, select theDisplay submitted data with confrmation checkbox.

Besides submitting system inormation, you can alsoattach any le i relevant to the issue or question.


Ater you have lled in all necessary inormation, submitthe request to Customer Care by clicking the Finish button.A Customer Care representative will contact you as soon aspossible.
