Message from Bill Eddins, Music Director

I suppose the Music Director of just about every orchestra will boast about “artistic success” at the end of a season. If you ask me, the concept of “artistic success” is pretty darn slippery. Does it mean progressive, adventurous, esoteric programming? And are concerts of progressive, adventurous and esoteric music performed to half-empty halls successful?

Personally, I think the notion of an orchestra’s “artistic success” is defined by consistent excellence in its performances of a wide variety of music and musical genres that appeal to a diverse community with assorted tastes. That sounds hard to do, and I won’t sugarcoat the fact that it IS hard to do. In order to accomplish my definition of “artistic success” as the ESO’s Music Director, I have to be equal parts realistic and idealistic, I have to appreciate what our audience wants and expects to hear their orchestra perform, and yet earn their trust in programming unfamiliar music that challenges and even provokes our loyal patrons. Ultimately, our success depends on our audiences’ enjoyment of what we have to offer. And so we can look at the ESO’s 2010/11 season and take pride in its multitude of artistic successes.

Our Resident Conductor Lucas Waldin had many opportunities to further hone his skills as both a programmer and conductor, rising to the occasion time and again. He is one of the main reasons cited by young audience members as to why they love coming to hear the ESO. The Resident Conductor program, generously supported by Enbridge and the Canada Council for the Arts, continues into its third year with Mr. Waldin in 2011/12.

We welcomed back many colleagues – many dear friends - in 2010/11. Janina Fialkowska, Bonaventura Bottone, Jean-Marie Zeitouni, Corey Cerovsek, Colin Currie, Jens Lindemann, Angela Cheng, Bruce Hangen, Jack Everly, Steven Reineke, Platypus Theatre, Al Simmons, and Karen Gomyo are just some of the great artists who returned to the Winspear Centre stage to collaborate with the orchestra and delight our patrons. Among all of these musicians, I have to single out Bob Bernhardt, a favourite with both our orchestra and our audience, who not only conducted the ESO at the Winspear Centre, but also led our Symphony Under the Sky Festival for the fifth consecutive year, helping us establish new attendance records over the Labour Day weekend.

It was also rewarding to have worked with many artists who made their ESO debuts: pianists Rafał Blechacz, Jan Lisiecki and Nobuyuki Tsuji’i (whose performance of Rachmaninoff brought tears to our audiences’ eyes!), conductors Mei-Ann Chen and Jean-François Rivest, the wonderful El Viento Flamenco ensemble from Nova Scotia, and the Broadway legend Ben Vereen all made their first appearances with us memorable and enriching for our patrons.

Our commitment to the finest Canadian orchestral music was a significant part of nearly every subscription series we presented this season. Other programming highlights included our Late Night series, which continues to develop an enthusiastic audience eager for a new kind of symphonic concert experience.

We were thrilled that our Special Concerts attracted so many new patrons. A concert devoted exclusively to the music of Frank Zappa received more rave audience reviews than any in recent memory. Three sold-out shows proved that Bugs Bunny is a great symphonic attraction. Our gala concert, featuring the extraordinary Cirque de la Symphonie, was a visual as well as a musical feast. The Peking Acrobats thrilled and terrified, and we proved that time can stand still by performing once again with Procol Harum, thirty-nine years after their ESO debut (at which time I was a month shy of my seventh birthday).

I want to thank our Board of Directors for their constancy and their generous work on behalf of this organization. As we welcome our new Board Chair Jim Carter, we also say a very fond farewell to Steven LePoole, whose skill and dedication over the past four years have been invaluable. Speaking for myself and the musicians, it is profoundly gratifying to have a person in leadership who so clearly loves music and is a tireless ambassador for the ESO.

None of the successes of the 2010/2011 season would have been possible without the efforts of the musicians of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Their dedication, musicianship, and performances throughout the course of a sometimes gruelling forty-two week season is why our audience keeps coming back for more. I want to single out our four rotating interim concertmasters in 2010/2011 for special mention: Eric Buchmann, Virginie Gagné, Broddy Olson and Richard Caldwell all sat in the hot seat and acquitted themselves admirably. I also want to thank the hard-working administrative staff, whose efforts are both comparable and complementary to that of the musicians. It’s a tribute to the efforts of everyone in the organization that the ESO won an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall in May 2012 (161 days from when I write this). This invitation, announced halfway through the 2010/11 season, created a rush of enthusiasm and excitement that is still burning strongly, and we’re proud that we’ll represent Edmonton on one of the world’s most eminent stages.

Message from Steven LePoole, Board Chair

My Friends,

The 2010/2011 season was one of transformation and preparation. We entered the second year of our five-year Strategic Plan, the roadmap that points the way to a successful and expansive future. The ESO is fortunate to call home the Francis Winspear Centre for Music. Seated in one of the world’s most superb concert halls, we enjoyed another year of innovative programming and powerful music by the superb musicianship of our 56-member orchestra under the leadership of our Music Director, the incomparable Bill Eddins. Under his guidance, our organization continues to stretch, pulling dreams only once imagined into the realm of reality.

Next year, your ESO makes its Carnegie Hall debut. It is indeed a privilege to be invited to perform on that venerated stage and we are excited to share with the world the works of some the ESO’s own, our three Composers-in-Residence, John Estacio, Allan Gilliland, and our newest member, Robert Rival. It is contributions such as those of Bill Eddins, our Resident Composers, our homegrown guest artists, and of course our talented and dedicated musicians that make Edmonton a thriving hub for arts and culture. And let us not forget the emerging artists and younger generations, whose love of music is so inspiring. We are entertained by our Musicians in the Making performing in the lobby before concerts, we nurture our aspiring composers through the Adopt-a-Player program and Young Composers Project, and we see our ESO’s future generation of patrons teeming through the Winspear lobby on their way into a Symphony for Kids concert.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to you, our audiences and our donors, for supporting your ESO. During an economic recession and a climate where government, businesses, and everyone else was tightening their belts, we inspired you, our ESO family, to declare your love of orchestral music proudly as you contributed generously to your ESO.

In 2009/2010, we developed a joint Strategic Plan for the ESO and Winspear Centre structured around the seven pillars of our organization—setting the ‘gold standard’ for Artistic Excellence, ensuring that the Winspear Centre remains one of the world’s premiere concert halls through dedicated care and foresight, fostering our Community Relationships with stakeholders and sponsors, nurturing the talent and musical appreciation of future generations through Education, focusing on Patron Development to cultivate our valuable relationships with our audiences and donors, ensuring maximum operational efficacy by reorganizing our Internal Relations, and laying a stable foundation for a prosperous future with responsible Financial Management. As we move into the future, we will stay aligned with our vision by focusing on these core areas of business, providing us with the direction and purpose to achieve greatness as an institution and as an orchestra.

It has been an honour and a privilege for me to serve the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra as Board Chair at such a pivotal and exciting time in our orchestra’s history. I welcome Jim Carter into the position, and wish him as much joy in this challenging and multifaceted role as it has brought to my life. My thanks to the Board members who have completed their terms and are stepping down. Colin Eicher, whose strong sense of community and his forthright insights to the Board, and Phyllis Clark, my predecessor as Chair who is just completing her 8th valuable year with the Edmonton Symphony Society and Winspear Centre, who will now apply her many years knowledge in her role as Chair of the Edmonton Symphony Concert Hall Foundation.

I am honoured to have been part of this organization as Board Chair for the past four years. This orchestra is close to my heart, as it is to many, many individuals in Edmonton. With the strong support of the Board and the dedication and hard work of management, staff, and our 56 musicians, we have accomplished much in the last four years and created a foundation for future audience growth, community engagement, a stable organization and most importantly, the continuation of orchestral music in the city of Edmonton.

I hope to see many of you waving your flags in the Home Town Fan section of Carnegie Hall next May! From me, and all of us on the Board of Directors, I offer a sincere thank you for your continued support.

Message from Annemarie Petrov, Executive Director

Friends,

Our ESO had a strong season artistically. The regular concerts sold well and the ESO had even more performances than the year prior, performing 119 concerts to audiences totalling over 150,000 people, not including numerous community and ensemble performances. The popular appeal of the artists we presented with the ESO contributed to successful specials, including Chantal Kreviazuk, the Canadian Tenors, and Bugs Bunny at the Symphony, and the many other artistic highlights as outlined in Bill Eddins’ report. The ESO went on the road for a run-out concert to Lloydminster, and we experienced record ticket sales for Symphony Under the Sky; in its 16th year, our festival continues to inspire Edmontonians to cap off their summers with music in the park. After a long search, we look forward to welcoming our newest Composer-in-Residence Robert Rival to the ESO family in the 2011/2012 season.

In 1952, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra was incorporated by group of community volunteers let by Mrs. Marion Mills, with Dr. Francis Winspear among the members of the first Board of Directors. It is our mission to continue to serve this very same community and build ever-stronger and lasting relationships with the community - our patrons. We acquired 1258 new subscribing households this past year, thanks in part to the 2-for-1 promotion which continues to be a strong motivator in our subscriber acquisition campaign. Through the implementation of Tessitura, our new patron relationship management program and ticketing software, we are now able to track retention of the 2-for-1 subscribers; by their third year, this group is renewing at a rate of over 80%, consistent with our core subscribers. This bodes well for continuing to build our core of loyal patrons. Single ticket sales generate additional revenue throughout the season, and also serve as an introduction for many people to experience the ESO, providing us with a very responsive group to target for subscription acquisitions. In the 2010/2011 season we sold 60,857 single tickets—an increase of 12% over the previous season, and 1232 households made a donation to the ESO. The total giving revenue from this generous group was $1,084,514—an increase of 7% over the previous season.

While we can proudly report that over 64% of revenue was contributed by our patrons, we are equally grateful for the essential support that we receive from government funders and corporations: The Canada Council for the Arts, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Edmonton Arts Council, as well as our series sponsors Landmark Group, Bill & Mary Jo Robbins, RBC Foundation, ESSO Imperial Oil Foundation, CIBC, LEXUS of Edmonton, and ATCO Gas, and Maclab Enterprises for their sponsorship of our 2-for-1 new subscriber campaign. We thank all those corporate citizens in our community who supported us this past year and made it possible for us to deliver music concerts to a wide segment of Northern Alberta.

Over 20,000 students, plus teachers and parents, attended our Education concerts this past season. Our Resident Conductor Lucas Waldin has further enhanced our programming by coordinating with teachers to develop concerts that tie in with grade-appropriate Social Studies curricula, as well as design study materials to complement the concerts. We are excited to bring musical education to the virtual level with our discoverESO.com website, which will launch at the beginning of next season. Thank you, Lucas, for your imagination and dedication in delivering captivating programs for young audiences.

In addition to the Board of Directors, musicians of the orchestra, Conductor-in-Residence Lucas Waldin, and my colleague Bill Eddins, I have the pleasure of working with an outstanding team throughout the organization. Since I cannot begin to single each out by name, I will acknowledge my senior management team: Rob McAlear, Artistic Administrator, Barbara Foley, Director of Finance and Operations, Ally Mandrusiak, Director of Events Management, Patti Stewart, Director of Community Relations, and Elaine Warick, Director of Patron Development. In addition, I wish to acknowledge Marc Carnes, who served as our Director of Community Relations until the spring of 2011. During his five-year tenure, he helped shape the future direction of the organization in patron and corporate development. His contributions are deeply appreciated.

Though we were not unaffected by the prevailing economic climate, our solid strategic planning and financial management helped us weather government funding reductions and the accompanying loss of 7 sold services. We made the decision to absorb this loss using our working capital instead of a transfer from our internally restricted fund, established as per Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) guidelines.

As we close the 2010/2011 season, we look ahead to marking two important milestones next year: the ESO’s 60th Anniversary and the ESO at Carnegie Hall! The reciprocity with our community and supporters is key for us. We are a community-owned orchestra, and simply could not achieve all that we do without the support of so many. Thank you to all our patrons and stakeholders, including our Board, our musicians, our volunteers, and our hard-working staff. Thanks also to our funders and sponsors, who demonstrate vision for the future by funding arts and culture activities that ultimately benefit our society.

Executive Director’s Report continuedAs we welcome Jim Carter to the position of Board Chair next year, I wish to close with a special thank you to Steven LePoole for his years of service. Steven began his term as Chair four years ago, around the same time that I joined the ESO. It has been one of the great privileges of my life to have worked alongside and learned from him during this time of organizational change. Not only did Steven provide exceptional leadership and vision to our organization, he unfailingly led by example and was a true ambassador for the ESO out in the community. He inspired many with his deep love of music, his generosity of spirit and openness to new ideas, and above all his sense of humour.

This has been a successful year for our ESO. With the groundwork we laid, we are poised for an exceptional 60th anniversary season.

In Our Patrons’ Words

Going to the ESO at the Winspear is one of the most enjoyable cultural events that we do.-Colin

I live in Saskatoon, and frequently travel across Canada (and even the States) to see concerts. I loved both my trips to see the ESO - stayed downtown, spent tons of time at the AGA, took in some great restaurants (100, L’azia, and Moriarty’s) and even had a chance to see Pippin at the Citadel.-Mark

I have never in my 26 years been to the symphony and I see now what I have been missing. Our Winspear Centre is such a beautiful hall and it should be enjoyed. We will be regular patrons from now on. -Bryce

I attended the concert Wednesday because I was so intrigued by the idea of an orchestra successfully performing somewhat bizarre, complicated pieces with the Zappa flavour. From the Peaches en Regalia overture, I was drawn in and smiled throughout, really amazed that this could be done. The ESO pulled it off beautifully.-Lydia (The ESO plays Zappa - March 15, 2011)

Above and beyond analyzing Nobuyuki’s technic, interpretation, effortlessness or otherwise it was a spiritual experience, as if music skips my ears and brain and went straight to my heart and soul.-Doron (Masters performances with pianist Nobuyuki Tsuji - April 29 & 30, 2011)

Definitely the most fun I’ve had since I was 7!-Mat (Bugs Bunny at the Symphony - February 19 & 20, 2011)

Community Outreach SpotlightMusicians in the MakingSponsored by TELUS, Musicians in the Making features promising student soloists and ensembles performing half-hour showcases prior to selected Edmonton Symphony Orchestra performances in the lobbies of the Winspear Centre. All participants are then invited to an ESO concert.

From children to tweens to University students, this season’s Musicians in the Making saw a colourful array of new and returning performers. Guests enjoyed 17 unique groups and artists who performed before 23 concerts throughout the 2010-11 season. From piano to vocals, winds to strings and sackbuts to saxophones, these budding musicians welcomed and entertained hundreds of ESO patrons while gaining that all-important experience of performing before live audiences.

Education HighlightsCIBC Adopt-a-playerIn 2010/2011 nine elementary schools partnered with an ESO musician to compose and perform their own original piece of music. This unparalleled educational opportunity engaged over 300 students in musical learning and teamwork, producing lively works such as Night of the Monsters, Nature in Danger and Celebration of Cultures.

Education ConcertsThe Edmonton Symphony performed 12 educational concerts in the 2010/2011 season. Over 18,000 students from kindergarten to grade 6 attended, experiencing a cross-curricular blend of music, literary and ecological learning. Schools otherwise lacking the means to attend these performances were invited to apply for a grant through the ESO’s UpBeat! program.

Older students from grades 7-12 were invited to 5 matinee rehearsals with Bill Eddins and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, witnessing first hand the mechanics of how a symphony concert comes together through leadership, practice and dedication. Bill and his guest artists made themselves available for questions after the performance, providing mentorship and guidance to Edmonton’s future musicians.

Young Composer ProjectThis year’s Young Composer was Andrew Reid, a grade twelve student from Edmonton Christian High School. Following six months of close mentorshop with former Composer-In-Residence Allan Gilliland, Reid composed his first symphonic work. Entitled Echos of Time, his piece was premiered by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra on September 5th during the ESO’s Symphony Under the Sky festival. Applications are still being accepted for our 2011/2012 program.
