A few of our customers...
South Staffordshire Water
About SSW
• Supply drinking water to 1.25 million people
• Approximately 36,000 commercial customers
• Operate over 1500 square km in the West Midlands, South Staffordshire, South Derbyshire, North Warwickshire and North Worcestershire areas.
Project Summary
• Replace legacy enterprise asset management system with IBM Maximo Asset Management. – Utilities industry solution
– Spatial add-on solution
– Mobile solution (Syclo)
• Integration – Legacy GIS (not an ESRI product)
– Many others
• Leakage, Payroll, Financial, Call Centre, Developer Services
• Enterprise Service Bus
• New ESRI customer; implement ArcGIS
Project Current Position
• Production Phase (over ground assets)
– live since April 2010
– Includes mobile solution (Syclo)
– Integration • Financials
• Payroll
• Distribution Phase (under ground assets)
– Currently in user acceptance testing
– Planned go live June 2011
A few of the challenges...
• Legacy GIS – Primary GIS for asset and location data, but not for work management
or service management data.
• Maximo, non-spatial location hierarchy
• Auto-creation of GIS features
• Retrieval of GIS data
• Public highway notices
Maximo, ArcGIS & Legacy GIS
• Maximo Spatial
– Pre-built solution, integrated with ArcGIS Server

Solution - Maximo, ArcGIS & Legacy GIS
• Inbound (relative to ArcGIS)
– Asset and location feature class data
– ArcGIS Data Interoperability (ETL)
– Nightly Process
• Outbound

Maximo Location Hierarchy
• Maximo contains a traditional, non-spatial location hierarchy.
• Provides key work management functionality – Supports users who are not spatially enabled
– Assets placed into locations
– General ledger account construction
– Cost roll-up
Administration
• Boundaries maintained within GIS
• Must preserve Maximo functionality – Assets within the correct location
– Location structure
• Not feasible to manually manage this activity manually – Over 1 million records
Solution – Automated Process
• Introduce an automated process – Periodically compare the data in Maximo and ArcGIS
– Utilise ArcSDE functionality
– Where there is a discrepancy, treat ArcGIS as the master and update Maximo.
• No user intervention
• Consistent hierarchy structure
Maximo ArcGIS
Auto-Creation of GIS Features
• Automatically create GIS features, based on service management and work management activities – Service Requests, Work Orders, etc
• Sources of data – Maximo itself; direct data entry
– External systems
• Call centre, developer services, leakage
• Mobile solutions
• Complex business logic
• Must be easy for the business to maintain
Solution – Escalation & Workflow
• Capture logic in escalations and work flows
– Easily edited by an Administrator within Maximo; no programming
Solution - GIS Workflow Tasks
• Custom work flow tasks
– Create features based on easting / northing information
– Create features based on existing GIS features; assets, locations or addresses.
– Achieved via ArcGIS integration; ArcSDE and ArcGIS REST
Solution - GIS Data Retrieved
• Work order attributes – Planning Area, DMA
• Work order lifecycle – Events trigger outbound integration messages to the ESB and other
systems; approved, in progress, complete, etc.
– Feature geometry included in the outbound message
• Achieved using the ArcGIS REST API

Public Highway Notices
• Legislation exists for street work activities
– Aims to co-ordinate street work activities, benefiting street authorities, work undertakers and road users alike.
Previous Process
• Feedback provided
• Notice requests submitted to a ‘street works’ team
– Various formats; paper, word documents, print-outs from a legacy work management system, etc.
• Work planned by various business units
– Spatial data gathered from various sources; legacy GIS, customer billing system, field devices, etc.
• Notice requests processed manually
– Typed into 3rd party system
– Co-ordination required; submissions must be received before a specific time each day, then be processed on that day
Process Issues
• No consistency in the quality of data being submitted – All of the various sources, the various methods, etc.
• High volume of communication – Resolving data issues
• Duplicate data entry – Time consuming and potentially error prone.
Solution – capture spatial information
• Move all work management activities into Maximo.
• Utilise the ArcGIS map API to capture information
Solution – Notice Application
• Notice application within Maximo – Single point of data entry.
– Validated data
– Reduced communication between parties.
Solution - Integration
• Integrate the Maximo system with third party notice system
• Maximo communicates with ArcGIS to extract related spatial data, via ArcGIS REST API

Solution – single click (almost)
• Users able to create notices directly from the work order application
– Filter and tag spatial work orders, click ‘Create notice(s)’
– Complete notice details and approve
