We end 2017 having had a great squibbing year and look forward to a wonderful, event filled, 2018 season!
Now planning continues of the various events that feature in early 2018 - including the RYA/SUZUKI Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace in North London during early March. If you haven’t as yet visited the show then consider placing it in your diary. It’s filled with everything you could possibly need for your racing in 2018 - plus lots of
boats to look at.
Back now to my Winter tasks, putting up decorations and the Christmas lights, planning my event itinerary for next year’s Squib sailing and stocking up on lots of wine for the festive season!
I hope you too have a great Christmas and New Year - plus much success in the 2018 Squib sailing season.
Merry Christmas!

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Nigel Grogan
It’s looking much like a great Squib Christmas!
If you follow Facebook you will be picking up the growing excitement about 2018. The Squib has a big birthday – 50. And it is going to be celebrated in style.
In this edition of eSquibber you will find news on Cowes Week – for those rather special Nationals (and as we go to press it’s already 50 Squibs entered). And then the fun starts as there’s
a sponsorship deal with AQL which means all entrants will get a free spinnaker. Imagine the sight of the Squib line with identical spinnakers flying! And free – but you to have to enter and turn up to get one.
Think about it this way, enter the Nationals, and the entry won’t cost you anything and you will still have the spinnaker to use afterwards.
And when you get to Cowes and take part you will be earning valuable tickets for the 50th Draw. You can’t buy tickets, you have to race but not just at the Nationals. The full rules will be published early in the New Year and the draw will run until the end of the Inlands 2018.
Oh, and the prizes? A brand new Squib for starters and more goodies to come. The draw will be made soon after the final qualifying race as it will take a little while to get all the data in.
On behalf of the Officers and Committee of the NSOA, may I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and we look forward to seeing you at the many celebration events for the Squib’s 50th Birthday.

During the dark days of Winter while our Squibs sit at home or in storage it’s nice to look at other ways of having fun on the water. Here is an RYA article for you to enjoy:
Going Inland – More Adventurous CruisingAdvice for Inland Waterways users on accessing tidal waters
Inland Waterways users come from all boating backgrounds, some are happy to potter the Kennet and Avon canal on their own boat for a few weeks of the year, others are looking further field, be it to mainland Europe or an adventure around the UK.Although the inland waterways network in the UK is extensive, and there are a number of “rings” which inland waterways users can cruise taking anything from just an afternoon (e.g. the East London Ring) to a good few weeks (e.g. the Four Counties Ring or the North Pennine Ring), the entire network is not completely joined up.
If you’re looking to cruise the Thames Ring or head from the River Trent to the River Ouse, for example, there will be an element of tidal waters to negotiate. This will inevitably be an interesting and challenging trip, but it’s important to understand the steps to take to prepare for such and adventure.
ADVENTURES ON INLAND WATERWAYS
ADVENTURES ON INLAND WATERWAYS ...
There are lots of waterways guides with invaluable information about the cruising area, such as where to buy fuel, pump-out facilities, areas of local interest and any navigational considerations along the way. When venturing on a route which incorporates a tidal stretch it is imperative that thorough planning is undertaken.
Whereas cruising within the inland waterways generally happens from dawn ‘til dusk (although some do travel at night), locking out of the inland waterways and on to tidal waters is not so straight-forward. There will be specific times relative to the height of tide where the lock is operational. Arriving outside those times could at best be inconvenient by having to wait before heading out on to the tide, at worst it might mean having to wait in strong tides until the gates are operational which could cause unnecessary stress, as well as being very challenging on the crew’s skills.
If you’re interested in transiting tidal water, it is important to do your planning and research. You should also check that boat insurance allows for tidal usage. You might also consider taking the RYA Essential Navigation and Safety course in preparation of your trip.
Practically, it is vital that the vessel and crew are set up to safely navigate the higher sea state on tidal waters caused by swell and passing vessels. Just as when heading into a lock, hatch doors should be closed, in addition side windows should be secured to withstand any wash or swell. It would only take a small amount of water to have a devastating impact on vessel stability, so protecting against water coming in is a priority. Before entering the tidal lock, ropes and any loose items, including those in the galley should be secured or stowed. Dampen solid fuel burning stoves. The conditions will have an effect on the attitude of the boat, so it is important that crew are properly briefed, prepared and equipped. Crew should wear life jackets as the risk of falling overboard is much higher in moving water.
With the right kind of preparations would-be adventurers will have an enjoyable, rather than an off-putting experience.

2018 NATIONALS - COWES WEEK UPDATE
Seasons greetings Squibber. This is to update you with developments for the Cowes Week 50th
anniversary Squib Nationals in 2018.
Plans are now well under way for this event which should be memorable for many reasons. Lendy Cowes Week Limited have embraced our presence and are laying on a superb combination of Championship and Cowes style courses, with the emphasis on fair racing out of the tides. And it seems the Class is embracing the event. Already we have 50 boats entered which is a record so far away from the event, and also more than the rest of the entrants for Cowes Week combined! . We just want to make sure that every NSOA member has as much knowledge of the event before they decide to do it!
• The event is from 4-11 August in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.• At the super early bird rate, ending on 29 December, entry is £231, rising to
£243 after this.• Those entering before the 29 December deadline will also be in with a chance
of winning free clothing, watches and entry fees. Let’s make it a Squibber!• We have negotiated a more than 50% discount with Red Funnel ferries to
cross the Solent with a car and trailer.• We have been superbly supported by AQL (a communication technology
company) and our sailmakers to provide every entrant with e new, free, spinnaker with the sponsors logo, which should significantly reduce the cost of the event.
Launching will be on the Island, at Fishbourne, or in Cowes itself if there is the demand, with secure trailer storage. Mooring is arranged in Cowes Roads for the duration at an added cost.
More information is available on the NSOA website under events, and also on the Cowes Week website, Lendycowesweek. Here you can click on “who’s taking part”, select Squibs and see all the entrants. We already have our first Irish boat, and the winners of all the last 15 Cowes Weeks! Squibs have
previously won the White Group overall, and Cowes Week overall. It really will be a special occasion and one not to be missed.
If you have any questions, please contact myself, Emma Baker, Sam Prime or Phil Russell, details again on the NSOA website. There is also a dedicated Facebook
page for the event, Squib Nationals 2018.
We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful Island in 2018.

2018 NATIONALS - COWES WEEK UPDATE ...
The Royal Mersey Yacht Club announces its intention to run a Spring Squib Open Meeting Event on 14/15th April 2018.
A series of races would be held on the tidal river at the dramatic Liverpool water front, with the opportunity for experienced sailors and NSOA members to race in four Squib boats owned either by the club or RMYC members. Refreshments will be provided at the club both after the races and at launch/recovery. There would be a briefing prior to racing to give information on the river and the interesting challenges of the tide. The price of the event sailing on in club boats £20 per person sailing. There are limited spaces on the club boats and so please register your interest with Ted Garner Squib Fleet Captain at [email protected] . We are also considering an additional option for launching and mooring squibs should sailors wish to sail their own boats. In this case the boats could be launched and recovered for free when RMYC has a crane on hire on Sat 31st March and lift out Tuesday 17th April 2018. There would be costs for providing the strops which we would establish should there be interest for this option. Additional racing for the visitors would be arranged for the 7th and 8th April. If there is interest in this unusual option please also let Ted Garner know at [email protected] join us for competitive racing, at a beautiful setting with the historic Royal Mersey Yacht Club, where you will be assured a warm welcome.
