ESPRESSO COFFEE RECIPES

An Italian Espresso is a short coffee drink prepared by forcing 1 to 1.5 fl Oz of near boiling water under pressure through finely ground coffee beans. That is different from an American cup of coffee which is prepared under no pressure, through a filtering process and using a lot more water. Resulting in a bigger cup.

As a result of the pressurized brewing process, the Italian espresso has a higher concentration of taste and aroma and a much thicker body and it’s characterized by the presence of a thick crema on top (a foam with a creamy consistency) that gives the espresso its richness and character.

WHAT’S AN ESPRESSO?

An Italian Espresso is a short coffee drink prepared by forcing 1 to 1.5 fl Oz of near boiling water under pressure through finely ground coffee beans. An American cup of coffee is prepared under no pressure, through a filtering process and using a lot more water. Resulting in a bigger cup (like the coffee you can expect from a K-cup system). As a result of the pressurized brewing process, the Italian espresso has a higher concentration of taste and aroma and a much thicker body and it’s characterized by the presence of a thick crema on top (a foam with a creamy consistency) that gives the espresso its richness and character.

MOST COMMON ESPRESSO DRINKS

ESPRESSO SHOT

DOPPIO ESPRESSO (DOUBLE)

BLACK EYE

A single shot of espresso, approximately 1-1/2 ounces. Best served in a pre-heated espresso cup.

Double the quantity of espresso to about 3 ounces for double the pleasure. Can be served in a cappuccino cup.

A cup of American style drip coffee with a double-shot of espresso added.

ESPRESSO ROMANO

CAFE AMERICANO

RISTRETTO

A single shot of espresso topped with fresh lemon or orange peel.

Espresso diluted with hot water to drip coffee strength.

A very short espresso. Typically served in Italian coffee stores. Make a short espresso of 1 fl Oz or less. Approximately 30 ml. Ristrettos are short, therefore the flavors and aroma are concentrated and very intense.

ESPRESSO MACHIATO

CAFFE LATTE

MOCHA CAPPUCCINO

A single shot of espresso topped with 1-2 tablespoons of foamed milk right in the espresso cup.

A double-shot of espresso mixed with approximately 5 ounces of steamed milk, typically little or no foam is added to the top. Served in a large bowl type or glass cup 9-12 ounces in capacity. For flavored latte, simply add some quality coffee syrup for taste like vanilla.

Mix 1/3 part espresso to 2/3 part steamed milk, after dissolving cocoa or chocolate syrup with the milk to taste.

CAPUCCINO

MOCHA CAPPUCCINO

A single or double espresso shot topped with whipped cream.

Distinct from both a latte and a caffe macchiato, a cappuccino is a glass of steamed milk with a middle band of espresso. The espresso settles under the airy milk froth yet over the liquid milk surface, creating a beautiful, three-layered drink.

Start by heating and texturing milk with a steam wand (generally from your espresso machine). Fill 1/3 of the glass with the milk. Then make a double espresso into the same glass. Finish off the remaining 1/3 of the glass with milk foam.
