The Eagles and the Black Bears• This marks the ninth meeting between Boston College and Maine. • The fi rst fi ve contests between the two schools came before 1930.• The Eagles and the Black Bears last squared off last year when BC defeated

Maine, 40-10. The 2014 matchup was the fi rst time Maine scored a touchdown off the Eagles since 1914.

• Maine took the fi rst three matchups, winning on home turf, but the Eagles have won the last fi ve consecutively, only allowing 13 total points.

• The Eagles have won the last fi ve matchups by an average score of 38.8-2.6.

BC-Maine Ties• Boston College assistant coach Kevin Lempa was the defensive backs coach at

Maine in 1977-80 under then-head coach Jack Bicknell. When Bicknell came to The Heights, Lempa came with him. Lempa is currently in his third stint with the Eagles and entering his 17th season overall with the program.

• Maine head coach Jack Cosgrove played for Bicknell (and Lempa) in Orono, graduating in 1978. He was a graduate assistant for the Black Bears from 1978-80, working with Lempa at Maine. They reunited in Chestnut Hill in 1985-86 when Cosgrove was an offensive assistant, working with the quarterbacks and wide receivers.

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College football team defeated Maine, 40-10, on Sept. 20, 2014 at Alumni Stadium. The Eagles started the season 3-1 for the first time since 2009 and recorded over 500 yards of offense for the third time.

Quarterback Tyler Murphy, who entered the day leading all quarterbacks in the nation with 401 yards rushing, carried 13 times for 99 yards before he was taken out midway into the final quarter, falling just short of his third 100-yard rushing game this season. He rushed for two touchdowns and threw for one while throwing for 130 more yards on an 11-for-18 afternoon. He has scored at least one rushing and passing touchdown in three of the four games in 2014 and rushed for at least 90 yards in all four.

Running back Marcus Outlow led the Eagles, tallied 107 yards and recorded his first career reception - a 28-yard pass from Murphy that set up first-and-goal in the third quarter. Outlow became the first true freshman to rush for over 100 yards since 2008 when Montel Harris racked up 116 in the Eagles’ 28-21 victory over Maryland. All Outlow’s rushing yards came in the fourth quarter. Classmate Jon Hilliman upped his career highs, rushing 21 times for 98 yards and running in for two scores for the second straight game.

Not only did the Eagles’ offense pick up 413 rushing yards, tallying over 300 for the third game in 2014, but the BC defense held its opponent to under 20 rushing yards for the second straight game. The Eagles were stingy, allowing just 16 rushing yards to the Black Bears.

The Black Bears got on the board first, scoring their first touchdown against the Eagles since 1915. It didn’t take long for BC to retaliate and the Eagles did not look back. After the game was tied at 10 early in the second quarter, the Eagles ran off 30 straight points to take the win.

Eagles Being Watched• Four BC players were named to five award watch lists in the

preseason, led by sophomore RB Jon Hilliman, who earned a spot on the Doak Walker Award and Maxwell Award watch lists.

• Named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell, the award is given to America’s College Player of the Year. Former quarterback Doug Flutie is the only BC player to win the award, captured in 1984.

• Andre Williams took home the Atlantic Coast Conference’s first-ever Doak Walker Award in 2013, given to the top running back in the nation.

• Junior RB Myles Willis was named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list presented by Texas Roadhouse. It is the second straight year Willis graced the list. The Louisville Sports Commission and Paul Hornung present the award to the most versatile player in college football. Willis, also a kick return specalist, is fourth on BC’s all-time list with 1,548 return yards and seventh with 64 total returns.

• Senior DL Connor Wujciak was named to the Outland Trophy watch list, which is presented annually to the nation’s top interior lineman on offense or defense. The Eagles’ Mike Ruth is BC’s only recipient, earning the award in 1985.

• Senior DB Justin Simmons was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, which is known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” and is awarded to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Getting Noticed Early• Many Eagles have stood out before the 2015 season was

even underway. Seven players were named to at least one preseason team:

• Sophomore WR Sherman Alston: Athlon Sports Preseason All-ACC Fourth Team

• Senior LB Steven Daniels: Athlon Sports Preseason All-ACC Second Team

• Sophomore WR Jon Hilliman: ESPN Preseason All-ACC; Phil Steele Preseason All-ACC Fourth Team; Athlon Sports Preseason All-ACC Second Team;

• Some Experience Needed• Boston College is tied for fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference

for number of graduated players on the roster with seven.• Virginia leads the way with 12. Syracuse and Pittsburgh each have

eight, while Georgia Tech also has seven graduates.

The Grind• Boston College will play 10 straight weeks of football before a bye

week on Nov. 14. • The Eagles are tied for 13th for the most consecutive weeks of

games with nine other schools. Colorado and Hawaii lead the way with 13 straight weeks.

Eaglets• 63 of 96 members of the Boston College football team are

freshmen, redshirt freshmen or sophomores. • There are only 16 seniors and one graduate student on the team,

making for a young group of players.• In that group of seniors, only four are skill positions (QB, RB, WR,

TE), tying for 19th in the country with the fewest. UCF has the least with none. Six schools, including Piitsburgh, Syracuse and Wake Forest, have one.

This is the Story• The biggest question coming in to the 2015 season was the

offensive line and sophomore quarterback Darius Wade. • Coming off the 2014 season in which BC boasted an O-Line of five

graduates that combined for 134 career starts, the Eagles are not returning a starter from last year.

• Senior OL Harris Williams will lead the way after missing last season with a broken ankle, suffered in the season opener against Massachusetts. After his 14 career starts, the next most experienced offensive lineman is senior OL Dave Bowen, a converted blocking tight end, who has played in 27 games in his career without a start.

• The Eagles are one of two offensive lines in the country in which all five linemen did not start a game last season. (The other is Toledo, which is the other school that had five graduated on the line in 2014.)

• The O-Line will be protecting Wade, who was named the starter after spring practice. He has eight attempts in his young career with three completions for 23 yards and rushed for 12. He will be looking for his first career touchdown. He is one of two expected first-time starters in the ACC, along with Duke’s Thomas Sirk.

Hilliman Hype• Sophomore RB Jon Hilliman returns to The Heights after a

breakout freshman campaign in which he rushed for 860 yards - second on the team and tops among returners - and scored 13 touchdowns.

• He earned All-ACC third-team honors from the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association and the league’s head coaches and was named the ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year.

• The Plainfield, N.J., native broke BC’s rookie record for rushing attempts with 210, which had been set in 2008 by Montel Harris.

• He also tied for ninth in BC record books for single-season rushing touchdowns.

• The sophomore tied for second in the ACC for rushing TDs and ranked third in the conference for rush attempts, tied for fourth with 6.0 points per game and was eighth for rushing yards (860) and rushing yards per game (66.2).

• He was BC’s first true freshman to record two rushing touchdowns in one game since 2008, notching two in five games -- including three in a row and at least one touchdown in eight games.

• Hilliman also recorded three 100-yard games and seven games of

70 yards or more

The Young Guns are Back• The Eagles set a BC record with 3,307 rushing yards in a season.

Of those yards, the freshmen and sophomores accounted for 64.7 percent of the total yardage (2,140 yards).

• The freshman class - now sophomores - also accounted for 44.4 percent (1,467 yards) of the Eagles’ total rushing yards.

• Of the 31 rushing touchdowns, sophomore RB Jon Hilliman led the way, with 13 scores, but the returning runners combined for 20 TDs - 64.5 percent of the total.

New Look at Center• Four-year starting center Andy Gallik was drafted in the sixth

round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans.• As the Eagles’ new offensive line forms, BC will look to find a new

ball snapper and junior Frank Taylor could be the man.• The Warrington, Pa., native has played in 15 games in his BC career,

including competed being in on 62 playing on special team plays and 85 total snaps in 2014.

Revamping the Receivers • First-year wide receivers coach Brian White could put the BC

receiving corps on the map this season.• The Eagles racked up just 1,681 yards as a run-first team last

season and just 40.6 percent of the production is returning in 2015 as BC’s top three receivers departed.

• Sophomore Sherman Alston leads the way with 175 yards and two touchdowns, followed by sophomore Charlie Callinan (149 yds, 1 TD) and senior David Dudeck (148 yds, 1 TD).

• Sophomore Thadd Smith is looking to have a breakout year after playing in nine games without a catch.

• Joining him are junior Harrison Jackson, who missed 2014 with a preseason, season-ending injury, freshman Elijah Robinson, who converted from quarterback to wide receiver in the preseason, senior Bobby Swigert, who is returning to the field after missing two years and having 11 knee surgeries, sophomore Drew Barksdale and freshmen Chris Garrison, Chase Pankey and Nolan Borgensen, a mid-year enrollee.

It’s All About the D• Seven starters from the Boston College defense that ranked

second in the nation in rush defense (94.5 yards per game) and 11th in overall defense (324.2 yards per game) a year return to the 2015 team.

• The Eagles held opponents to under 100 rushing yards seven times - the majority of games - in 2014. Three times opponents tallied 20 yards or less.

• BC is tied with Ohio State for the second-fewest 100-yard rushers - 21 - since 2005. Alabama (15) is first.

• Against Power 5 opponents, the defense allowed just 3.78 yards per carry (second in the nation), only 33.2 percent ran for more than five yards on a carry (sixth in the nation), the Eagles allowed just 35 runs of 10 or more yards total (second in the nation) and 28.7 percent were for a loss or no gain, which was the best in the country.

They Are Called Rushmen• BC was tied for 26th in the nation with 89 tackles for a loss of

351 yards last season. • The Eagles are returning seven defenders who tallied at least

three tackles for a loss in 2014. Six of the top eight come back to The Heights, including junior DE Kevin Kavalec, who recorded 10.5 TFLs and senior DL Connor Wujciak, who had 7.5.

• Junior DE Malachi Moore returns as one of the three players who recorded four sacks (along with Brian Mihalik and Josh Keyes - both with NFL teams).

• Since the arrival of defensive coordinator Don Brown and defensive line coach Ben Albert, the Eagles have vastly improved their numbers of sacks and tackles for loss. In 2012, BC recorded six sacks and 45 tackles for a loss of 147 yards. In just one year, the number jumped to 36 sacks and 88 tackles for a loss of 371 yards in 2013 and last year, BC recorded 33 sacks and 89 tackles for a loss of 351 yards.

Returning Tacklers• Not only do the Eagles return the majority of their rushmen,

they also return the top two tacklers from a year ago.• Seniors DB Justin Simmons and LB Steven Daniels hope to

make the same impact they did in 2014. • Simmons led the team with 76 tackles, including 76 solo stops,

and nabbed two interceptions, notching 20 return yards.• Daniels made 72 tackles, including 44 unassisted, racked up

seven tackles for a loss of 13 yards and recorded 1.5 sacks. He also recorded an interception and recovered two fumbles.

Out for the Season• Senior TE Mike Giacone (lower leg, sustained in preseason)

Out 6-8 Weeks• Freshman WR Chris Garrison (hand, sustained in preseason)• Freshman WR Ben Glines (shoulder, sustained in preseason)• Out 1-2 Weeks• Junior LB Tim Joy (knee, sustained in preseason)

Miles for Myles• Junior RB Myles Willis is slated to be the Eagles’ kick return

man again in 2015.• The Conyers, Ga., native currently sits fourth on BC’s all-time

list with 1,548 return yards and is ranked seventh with 64 returns.

• He was named to the Paul Hornung watch list for the second straight time. The award is given to the most versatile player in college football.

• Last season, Willis returned 34 kickoffs for 895 yards (26.3 average -- third best in the ACC), including a 95-yard return for a touchdown against Syracuse (11/22). He was one of three players in the ACC to return a kickoff for a TD.

• His kickoff returns and yardage ranked first in the ACC• The total yardage was also second in BC’s single-season

record books and his returns tied for second.

Punting to Alston• Sophomore WR Sherman Alston is tabbed to be BC’s punt

returner again in 2015 after picking up the duties three games into the season.

• Last year, the Harlem native returned 15 punts for 125 yards.• His long of 36 yards came at NC State (10/11).

Questions in the Kicking Game• Kicking field goals and extra points was a rocky road for the

Eagles in 2014. Heading into the year, BC had to replace four-year veteran Nate Freese, who connected on 70-of-81 field goal attempts in 50 career games and set a school record for field goals and points (324).

• Senior Alex Howell splut the kicking duties with Joey Launceford and sophomore Mike Knoll for the majority of the season as head coach Steve Addazio tried to find the best combination. This year, freshman Colton Lichtenberg is now in the mix.

• Howell was 5-for-11 on field goal attempts with a long of 44 yards. He was 3-for-8 in the 40-49-yard range. He was 8-for-9 on extra-point attempts.

• Knoll was 3-for-4 with his lone miss coming on a 36-yard attempt against Syracuse (11/22). He was 3-for-4 on extra-point attempts with the one miss coming in overtime against Penn State in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl (12/27).

Perfectly Good Punting• Senior K/P Alex Howell will resume his punting and kickoff

duties from a year ago, in which he excelled. • He was named All-New England Team for his punting abilities,

averaging 42.5 yards per punt, good for sixth in the ACC.• Fifteen of his punts were over 50 yards and he recorded 16

fair catches and 21 inside the 20-yard line.• He also averaged 58.8 yards per kickoff with 18 touchbacks.

Like Father Like Son• Senior TE Louie Addazio is one of seven players who currently

plays for his father, the head coach. • The younger Addazio transfered to Boston College from

Syracuse for the 2013 after Steve Addazio accepted the head coaching job.

• The other schools include: Colorado, Iowa, Iowa State, Middle Tennessee and Utah).

Pack Your Bags for Dublin• Boston College will host Georgia Tech in Dublin’s Aviva

Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3 in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic to open the 2016 season. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

• It will be the third time in six years an American college football game will take place in Ireland and the second BC will play on the Emerald Isle.

• BC will be making its second visit to Ireland. In 1988, the Eagles defeated Army, 38-24, in front of 45,000 fans in the old Lansdowne Road Stadium in the Emerald Isle Classic. It was the first American football game played in Europe.

Check Out the Throwbacks• The football team will wear uniforms commemorating the

30th anniversary of the 1985 Cotton Bowl victory and the famous Hail Mary pass when the Eagles face Notre Dame on Nov. 21 at Fenway Park.

• The specially-designed Under Armour uniforms were inspired by the “Miracle in Miami,” Doug Flutie’s last-second touchdown pass to Gerard Phelan on Nov. 23, 1984 in the Orange Bowl to give the No. 10 Eagles a 47-45 win over 12th-ranked Miami. BC finished the season with a 10-2 record and defeated Houston, 45-28, in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 1985.

Join Coach Addazio for the BC Football Radio Show• Head coach Steve Addazio will join the Eagles’ play-by-play

announcer Jon Meterparel for a weekly radio show for the 2015 season.

• The Boston College Football Radio will air on ESPN WEEI 850 AM and on tunein.com every Monday from 7 to 8 p.m.

• Fans can also join the coach at the live airing at The Stockyard restaurant in Brighton, Mass.

Eagles in the BC Hall• Former BC football players Doug Brzezinski and Damien

Woody are two of the eight former student-athletes who will be inducted into the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame this fall.

• The honorees will be inducted in a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 9 at Conte Forum. They will also be recognized at halftime of the football game against Wake Forest on Saturday, Oct. 10.
