Prof. Deirdre KELLY

Professor of Paediatric Hepatology

The Liver Unit, Birmingham Children’s Hospital

Deirdre Kelly is Professor of Paediatric Hepatology at the University of Birmingham, Consultant Paediatric

Hepatologist and Director of the Liver Unit for Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. She is a

graduate of Trinity College, Dublin.

Research Contributions

She has trained in both adult and paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology. She set up the Paediatric Liver Unit at

Birmingham Children's Hospital in 1989 which provides a national and international service for children with liver

failure and undergoing liver transplantation, transforming survival and outcome for these children. Until 2008, the

Unit was the only national unit to be designated for small bowel and liver transplantation in the UK.

Prof. Kelly runs an active research programme focusing on viral hepatitis in children, molecular genetics of inherited

liver disease, quality and outcome of life following liver and/or intestinal transplantation. She is on the Council of the

General Medical Council (2013-). She was a Commissioner on the Care Quality Commission (2008-2013) and

Healthcare Commission (2007-2009).

She was Medical Director of the Children's Hospital (2000-2007). She has been President of the European Society of

Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) (2006-2010), British Society for Paediatric

Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN) (2004-2007) and the International Paediatric Transplant

Association (IPTA) (2002-2005).

Publications

Professor Kelly is author of several textbooks about paediatric liver disease and has published many original articles

and chapters on liver disease, liver transplantation and viral hepatitis.

Director of the Research Institute for Child Nutrition University,

Michael J. Lentze received his MD degree in the University of Munich, Germany and was trained in the Children’s Hospital of Munich in Paediatrics’. His gastroenterology training he received at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. Thereafter he served as head of the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology in Bern/Switzerland. In 1990 he became Chairman of the Department of Paediatrics’ at the University of Bonn/Germany. Currently he is director of the Research Institute for Child Nutrition in Dortmund/Germany. Research Areas Congenital diarrheas, pediatric nutrition, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease. Publications Prof. Lentze published more than 400 original papers, reviews, comments, editorials, book chapter and guidelines. His research has been supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and German Science Foundation. Professor of Pediatrics at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University

Raanan Shamir received his MD degree in the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, and was trained in Pediatrics at the Beilinson Medical Center, in Petach-Tiqva, Israel. In the early 90’s, he was a fellow at the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and came back to Israel to be the Head of the Department of Nutrition at the Israel Ministry of health, and then held the position of Head of the Gastroenterology and Nutrition Unit at Meyer Children’s Hospital in Haifa. Current Research Areas They include exploring the effects of oral insulin supplementation on the intestine, pediatric nutrition, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease and childhood hyperlipidemia. Publications Prof. Shamir published more than 250 original papers, reviews and comments, book chapters and guidelines. His research has been supported by prestigious funds such as the European Community Framework funds and the Israel Science Foundation. Prof. Shamir serves as an Editor for the pediatric section of Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism, is the Senior Associate Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (JPGN), and serves as a reviewer for journals in the field of Pediatrics, Nutrition, Gastroenterology and atherosclerosis. Dr. Cooke is Head of the General Paediatric Services at Somerset Hospital in Cape Town, affiliated with University of Cape Town.

She is working in the inpatient, outpatient and community settings. For the preceding 7 years she was head of Ambulatory Paediatrics at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital/Stellenbosch

University where she managed the general paediatric emergency department and short stay ward. She trained in paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Red Cross Children’s Hospital and is registered as a Paediatric Gastroenterologist.

Her special interests are in aspects of gastroenterology relevant to general paediatrics including diarrhoeal disease

and malnutrition, as well as in cystic fibrosis and liver disease. Recent research has focused on mortality in severe acute malnutrition, aspects of diarrhoeal disease management in the emergency setting, and endoscopy in HIV-infected children. She is involved in the Western Cape Province Department of Health Nutrition Working Group on

nutrition policy in the province.

Dr. Goddard completed an MSc in Medical Biochemistry before graduating with in medicine.

Subsequently she completed a PhD in Paediatric immunology and then did her paediatric training at Red Cross

Children’s Hospital.

She has been a senior consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology since 2001 and has been Head of Paediatric

Gastroenterology at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital since 2007. She has published over 30 peer

reviewed articles and has presented at numerous national and international congresses.

The Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition division of Red Cross War memorial children’s Hospital

manages children with a wide spectrum of intestinal, liver and nutritional diseases. Between 300 and 400 children

with complex diseases are admitted annually and approximately 600 patients are seen annually in the outpatient

clinics. In addition around 3 800 children are admitted annually to the hospital with acute gastroenteritis.

The unit at Red Cross Children’s Hospital is the only unit in the public sector offering liver transplantation to children

in Sub-Saharan Africa. It has had an active liver transplantation unit since 1991.

The division provides clinical training, including procedural skills, and training in research methodology.
