Palabras afirmativas y negativas
Note that the word “no” cannot negate a noun in Spanish as it does in English.
You must use a form of the word ninguno to do this. (For example: No tengo ningún problema.)
The words ninguno and alguno may be used before the preposition de:
Ninguno de mis estudiantes hace su tarea.
Alguno and ninguno drop the –o before a masculine singular noun and an accent is added.
¿Tienes algún libro?
No, no tengo ningún libro.
Para describir “how long ago” en español, utilizas:
Hace + period of time + que (no) + un verbo en el presente (no en el pasado como en inglés).
.
Ejemplos:
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que trabaja usted aquí?
Hace diez años que trabajo aquí.
¿Hace mucho tiempo que Ud. es profesor?
Hace quince años que soy profesor.
¡Hace mucho tiempo que no te veo!
How word is used Afirmativo Negativo To agree or disagree Sí (yes) No
When talking about things Algo (something) Nada (nothing)
When talking about people Alguien (someone, somebody) Nadie (no one, nobody)
When talking about amount Algún (any, some) Alguno, a, os, as (any, some)
Ningún (no one, not any, none) Ninguno, a (no one, not any, none)
When talking about frequency Siempre (always) Nunca, jamás (never, not ever)
To agree or disagree También (also) Tampoco (not either, neither)

Hace + time expressions
Las comparaciones
1. De igualidad:
The adjective agrees with the first item of comparison. (Often this is the subject.) Ejemplos: Eres tan alto como yo. / Trabajo tan rápido como tú. The word tanto agrees with the noun that comes after it, not the subject of the sentence. Ejemplo: Consuelo tiene tantos exámenes como yo.
Sometimes when we are saying “as much as”, we compare activities (verbs), and not a noun.
When this happens, we use tanto como. In this case, “tanto” will not change endings.
Ejemplo: Me gusta leer tanto como escribir.

Saber y Conocer
In Spanish, there are two verbs that express the idea “to know”. These two verbs are “saber” and “conocer”. The verbs you choose depends upon the context in which it is used.
Saber (present tense)
Saber To know (how to do, a fact)
sé sabemos
sabes sabéis
sabe saben
Saber – to know a fact or information; to know how to do something
We use saber to express or describe what we know “how to do” by following it with an infinitive. Only saber can be followed by an infinitive. Only saber can be followed by que, qué, donde, dónde, si, cuándo (that, what?, where, where?, if, when?...etc.) These are words that introduce facts.
Ejemplos: La señora Salinas sabe la respuesta. (information) Mrs. Salinas know the answer. Yo sé cocinar bien. (saber + infinitive) I know how to cook well. ¡Yo no sé dónde está mi tarea! I don’t know where my homework is!
Conocer (present tense)
Conocer To know (people, places)
conozco conocemos
conoces conocéis
conoce conocen
We use conocer when we talk about someone we know or places we are familiar with.
When we talk about “knowing” a person, we have to remember to use the personal “a”.
Ejemplos: Yo conozco al profesor. (a + el = al) Mi madre conoce Bogotá bien. (no personal “a” because this is a location, not a person)
The personal “a”
When the direct object is a person, a group of people, or a pet, use the word “a” before the object. This is called the “personal a”. Ejemplo: Visito a mi hija.

Event’s location: (where an event is taking place)
El concierto es en el gimnasio de la escuela. La fiesta es en la casa de Eva.

Los Verbos Reflexivos
What do you see when you look in the mirror? You see YOURSELF! Your reflection!
That is what a reflexive verb shows. The subject of the verb (doer) is the same person who receives the action. We have a couple of examples of this in English. Compare the reflexive form of the verb with the non-reflexive form. How is the meaning changed?
Reflexive Non- Reflexive Joe ties his shoes himself. Ted ties his little brother’s shoes. I cut my finger. I cut the grass.
Many verbs in Spanish are used reflexively. As you learn these new verbs, be sure to learn them with the SE at the end so you will remember the subject is doing the action to himself.
Reflexive pronouns can either go before a conjugated verb or after an infinitive. Before the verb: Me voy a lavar el pelo. After the verb: Voy a lavarme el pelo. Conjugating Reflexive Verbs is easy. The only thing different from regular verbs is that you MUST use the REFLEXIVE pronoun to show that the subject is doing the action to himSElf.
lavarse - to wash oneself
Yo me lavo
Nosotros nos lavamos
Tú te lavas

Uds./ellos/ella se lavan

Pronombres reflexivos Me myself
Nos ourselves
Te yourself
Os yourselves
Se himself, herself, yourself (if subject is Ud.)
Se themselves, yourselves (if subject is Uds.)
SPECIAL NOTES about Reflexive Verbs
1. The meaning of the verb changes if it is not reflexive. Remember, when it is reflexive the subject is doing the action to HIMSELF. COMPARE: Yo lavo el perro. Yo me lavo la cara. Yo pongo los libros en la mochila. Yo me pongo una chaqueta. Mamá seca los platos. Mamá se seca el pelo. Los chicos pintan la pared. Los chicos se pintan para Halloween.
2. When you use a reflexive verb after another verb (a modal [conjugated] verb), the reflexive pronoun must match the subject of the sentence. Don’t forget when you do that, the pronoun can go either on the end of the infinitive or IN FRONT of the modal verb.
Yo me pinto las uñas. Yo voy a pintarme las uñas. Yo me voy a pintar las uñas. Miguel se viste bien para su cita. Miguel quiere vestirse bien para su cita. Miguel se quiere vestir bien para su cita. Tú te acuestas tarde esta noche. Tú puedes acostarte tarde esta noche. Tú te puedes acostar tarde esta noche.
NOTE: The reflexive pronoun must go either in front of the modal [conjugated] verb or attached to the end of the infinitive. You cannot put it in the middle! The two verbs make up a “verb unit” and cannot be separated.
3. After a preposition, you use the infinitive. If it is a reflexive verb, the reflexive pronoun must agree with the subject.
Después de despertarme, yo me baño y me cepillo los dientes. Usamos esos cortaúñas para cortarnos las uñas. Vamos a ducharnos antes de acostarnos.

Los Adjetivos Posesivos
Possessive adjectives indicate to whom or to what something belongs. In Spanish there are different forms of
possessive adjectives depending on whether the noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural. There are
also two different sets of possessive adjectives: the short/unstressed forms and the long/stressed forms.
Spanish Possessive Adjectives (before a noun)
Ejemplo: mi libro
Short/unstressed forms
singular plural
my mi mis
your tu tus
your (Ud.), his, her su sus
our nuestro/a nuestros/as
your vuestro/a vuestro/as
your (Uds.), their su sus
Spanish Possessive Adjectives (after a noun)
All of these must agree in Gender and in Number with the noun!
Ejemplos: El libro es mío. Los libros son míos.
Long/stressed forms
singular plural
mine mío/a míos/as
yours tuyo/a tuyos/as
yours (Ud.), his, hers suyo/a suyos/as
ours nuestro/a nuestros/as
yours vuestro/a vuestros/as
yours (Uds.), theirs suyo/a suyos/as
An important difference between Spanish and English is in the the use of the pronouns su and sus. In English
you have to choose between his, her, your, its and their, whereas in Spanish there is no distinction by gender,
only by number. Su and sus can each mean his, her, your, its and their depending on the context.

TODAS LAS CONJUGACIONES DE VERBOS EN EL PRETÉRITO
A Step-by-Step Guide to talking in the past tense using the Preterit
To conjuguate REGULAR –ar, -er or –ir verbs in the preterite, drop the ending
(-ar, ero r –ir) and add one of the following:
-AR -ER/-IR
yo - é - í
tú - aste - iste
Ud. / él / ella - ó - ió
nosotros/as - amos - imos
vosotros/as - asteis - isteis
Uds. / ellos / ellas
- aron - ieron
What person is talking? (yo, tú, Ud./él/ella, nosotros, vosotros, Uds./ellos/ellas) Remember that sometimes you might have to think a bit harder about who is doing the action. (ejemplos: Los chicos = ellos, Marta y yo = nosotros)
Remember to add the correct ending that you need!
Spelling change verbs (-car, -gar, -zar)
These changes take place ONLY in the “yo” form of the verb. Regular endings are used.
-car : C → QU Buscar - to look for
-gar : G → GU Jugar - to play
-zar : Z → C Empezar – to begin
busQUé buscaste buscó buscamos buscasteis buscaron
juGUé jugaste jugó jugamos jugasteis jugaron
empeCé empezaste empezó empezamos empezasteis empezaron
26
Sandal verbs in the Preterite (two different types)
1. These changes take place in the ENDINGS of the Ud., él, ella form and the Uds., ellos, ellas form.
I → Y in these –aer, -eer and oír verbs. (Also notice the additional accents on the i’s.)

oí oíste oyó oímos oísteis oyeron
2. These changes take place in the STEM of the Ud., él, ella form and the Uds., ellos, ellas form.
• All verbs in this category are –ir ending verbs that are also stem-changing (or boot) verbs in the present tense.
• The only changes are from O to U and from E to I. (There are no E to IE changes!)
Morirse - to die
me morí nos morimos te moriste os moristeis se murió se murieron

Los Adjetivos Demonstrativos
All demonstrative adjectives come before the noun and agree with the noun in gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural).
Singular
Plural
This
Este/a These Estos/as
That
Ese/a Those Esos/as
That (over there)
Aquel/aquella Those (over there) Aquellos/as
This and These have the “T’s”; That and Those don’t.
Spanish has an extra demonstrative adjective to indicate items physically located even farther away from you. In other words, Spanish has an equivalent to “this” and “that”, but also has “that one over there” and “those over there”. aquel aquella
ese esa
este esta
estos estas
esos esas aquellos aquellas
El Uso de Adjectivos como Sustantivos
In Spanish, many adjectives can also be used to function as nouns. Adjectives made into nouns are the
equivalent of the English “_____ one” or “_____ person”.
Ejemplos:
Blanco (white) el blanco, la blanca (the white one)
Pobre (poor) los pobres (the poor people)
Viejo (old) la vieja (the old one)
The gender and number will depend on what is being referred to.
¿Qué falda prefieres? - La roja. (Which skirt do you prefer? - The red one.)
28
Los Objetos Directos
You must first remember that a Direct Object in a sentence is the person, event or thing affected by the verb.
The main difference between the use of the direct object pronouns in Spanish and English is their placement.
In English the substitute for the direct object (and its article) are placed where the original object was. In
Spanish the pronoun is placed in front of the verb, replacing also any article used with the object previously.
The pronouns lo, la, los and las can refer to people, places or things.
The pronouns me, te, os and nos refer ONLY to people.
Singular Plural Me me Nos us
Te you familiar Os you [all] familiar vosotros
Lo/La him, it, her, you (formal) Ud. Los/Las them, you [all] formal Uds.
Remember that in Spanish the subject and the verb ending tell who does the action.
Ejemplo: La Sra. Ramos me ayuda.
The direct object pronoun indicates who receives the action.
Ejemplo: ¿Me ayudas, por favor? Can you help me, please?
Placement of Direct Object Pronouns
There are three different situations when a DOP (direct object pronoun) can or must be attached.
An infinitive follows a conjugated verb: DOP can be placed before the conjugated verb or
attached to the infinitive.
Ejemplos: Nos quieren llevar al cine. Quieren llevarnos al cine.
Present participle: DOP can be placed before the conjugated verb or attached to the present
participle.
Ejemplos: Jorge nos estaba ayudando. Jorge estaba ayudándonos.
Affirmative command: DOP must be attached to the command.
Ejemplo: Come las frutas. Cómelas.
29
Otros Usos Para el Pronombre Reflexivo
You have already learned that you use reflexive pronouns to say that people do something to or for
themselves.
Miguel se cepilla los dientes mientras yo me afeito.
Other reflexive verbs describe a physical or emotional state. Verbs of this type include:
Divertirse (to enjoy oneself)
Sentirse (to feel)
Some reflexive verbs describe a change of state and they carry the added meaning of “to get” or “to become”.
Me enojé. I became angry, got mad.
¿Te aburriste? Did you get bored?
Se puso muy nervioso. He became very nervous.
Se cansaron. They got tired.
Other Reflexive Verbs aburrirse to get bored
ponerse… to become…
casarse to get married

divertirse to have fun, enjoy oneself
*reírse to laugh

Tema 3 – Recuerdos del pasado
El imperfecto
The imperfect tense is used to describe what used to happen or what happened regularly/periodically in the past.
I used to play at my neighbors’ house. My family used to live in Colombia.
–ar verbs all of them
yo -aba
nosotros/as* -ábamos
tú -abas
vosotros/as -abais
Ud. él -aba ella
Uds. ellos -aban ellas
Note that all of the –er/-ir endings have accent marks, but –ar endings use accents only on the “nosotros” form!
Since the yo and Ud., él, ella forms have the same endings in the imperfect, use subject pronouns as needed to avoid confusion.
Uses:
1. On-going action (was/were)
2. repeated action (used to)
3. no definite beginning or end
4. time/date/ feeling/description
5. interrupted activity (cuando)
Irregular Imperfect Verbs (only 3!)
*Don’t forget the accent on the nosotros form! All forms of ver have accents!
The imperfect tense may also be used to tell what time it was or what the weather was like when something
happened. We also use the imperfect tense to describe physical, mental, and emotional states of a person or
thing when something happened.
Ser - to be
era éramos *
eras erais
era eran
Ver - to see

Pronombres de Objeto Indirecto
Indirect Objects—to whom or for whom the action of the verb is intended. An indirect object is usually a person receiving the direct object. The pronouns in Spanish are basically the same as the ones used for the direct objects, with the exception of the Ud., él, ella and Uds., ellos, ellas forms.
These pronouns replace the indirect object noun:
Singular
Plural
me ( to/for) me
nos (to/for) us
te (to/for) you (familiar)
os (to/for) you [all] (familiar)
le (to/for) him/her/ you (formal) les (to/for) them/you [all] (formal)
Indirect Object Pronouns follow the same placement rules as direct object pronouns.
In affirmative sentences, the indirect object pronoun goes before the verb. Ejemplo: Le entrego la tarea al Sr. Peña.
In negative sentences, the indirect object pronoun goes between the negative and the verb. Ejemplo: No le entrego la tarea al Sr. Peña.
In sentences with two verbs, where one verb is conjugated and the other is an infinitive or present participle “ing” (-ando, -iendo) there are two options for placement.
Place the indirect object pronoun before the conjugated verb. Ejemplos: Les voy a contar un chiste. Nos está sirviendo el almuerzo.
Attach the indirect object pronoun to the infinitive or present participle. Ejemplos: Voy a contarles un chiste. Está sirviéndonos el almuerzo.
In sentences using an affirmative command, the indirect object pronoun is also attached. Ejemplo: Hazme un favor, por favor.
Repaso - Three different instances when the indirect object pronoun may be attached. Voy a darle la tarea a Isabel. Estoy dándole la tarea a Isabel. Dale la tarea a Isabel.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Reciprocal Actions
Sometimes the reflexive pronouns se and nos are used to express the idea “(to) each other”.
These are called reciprocal actions.
Ejemplo: Los novios se abrazaban y se besaban.
The bride and groom were hugging each other and kissing each other.
37
Verbos Como “Gustar”
This is a good time to discuss the verb "gustar" because using it requires use of the IO pronouns. When talking about things, persons, activities, ideeas, etc. that you like, in Spanish we use the verb “gustar”. When composing sentences, think of gustar as to please or to be pleasing to and not as to like. (It will save you a lot of headaches!)
Spanish has other verbs that also work like gustar:
• There are only 2 forms for each verb (regardless of tense) – the 3rd person singular and plural.
• The form that is used is determined by the number of things that are fascinating, pleasing, boring, etc.
El Presente Singular Plural
gustar to be pleasing gusta gustan
fascinar to fascinate fascina fascinan
parecer to appear to be parece parecen
aburrir to bore aburre aburren
encantar to be very pleasing encanta encantan
molestar to bother molesta molestan
doler to feel pain (hurt) duele duelen
The person that is fascinated, pleased, bored or bothered is expressed through the use of an indirect object pronoun.
Singular Plural
me me nos us
te you os you [all]
le you (ud.), him, her, it les you [all] (uds.), them
To put this all together, the word order is:
Indirect object pronoun + verb + subject (what is fascinating)
Me fascinan los deportes. Sports are fascinating to me.
To make the sentence negative, just write no before the verb.
No me gustan los libros románticos.
¿Recuerdas? Anytime you talk about an activity such as playing a sport, singing, etc, the verb must be in the singular form. Me encanta correr.

Usos del imperfecto (description) A- Age
L- Location

E- Emotional/mental state
P- Physical/personality description
T- Telling time-date
El Imperfecto Progresivo
Now let’s say that you want to talk about what you were doing in the past. You can use the imperfect
progressive tense (just as you have used the present progressive tense to describe with you are doing).
Remember? Form of Estar + present participle (-ing “-ando, -iendo”)
The only difference is that now you will use the IMPERFECT form of estar instead of the present tense form
of estar.
Present Progressive Imperfect Progressive
Yo estoy cocinando Yo estaba cocinando.
Yo estoy escribiendo Yo estaba escribiendo.
Why use the imperfect rather than the preterite? Because an action that is progressive is also continuous,
and continuous actions require the imperfect.
We use this to talk about something that was happening.
Ejemplos:
La Sra. Melocotón estaba caminando. Mrs. Melocotón was walking.
Estábamos estudiando. We were studying.
We will combine this with the preterite to talk about something that was happening when
something else interrupted the action.
Ejemplos:
La Sra. Melocotón estaba caminando cuando se cayó.
Estábamos cocinando cuando el teléfono sonó.
Participios Presentes Irregulares Here are a few examples. These changes apply to all –ir verbs that change stems in the Present Tense,
plus sandal verbs in the Preterite Tense.
e→i o→u i→y diciendo* (decir) siguiendo (seguir) durmiendo (dormir) creyendo (creer) cayendo (caer) pidiendo (pedir) sirviendo (servir) muriendo (morir) leyendo (leer) oyendo (oír) repitiendo (repetir) viniendo* (venir) trayendo (traer) yendo (ir)
When using object pronouns with the imperfect (or present) progressive, they may be placed before estar
or attached to the present participle. When the pronoun is attached, a written accent must be added.
Ejemplos:
- ¿Qué estás haciendo con las verduras?
- Las estoy cocinando.
O: - Estoy cocinándolas.
3←2←1
(imperfect form of “estar”) + present participle
49
Count back three. That’s where you put me!
The written accent is placed 3 syllables back
from the end of the word.
Participios Pasados
In English, the past participle is formed by adding “ed” to the end of the verb.
In Spanish, the past participle is created by following these steps:
Drop the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir)
Add -ado (for -ar verbs) or -ido (for -er, -ir verbs).
-ar -ado -er -ido -ir -ido
hablar habl + ado = hablado comer com + ido = comido vivir viv + ido = vivido
For –er and –ir verbs, if the stem ends in a vowel, a written accent will be required. Note: this rule does not apply (and no written accent is required) for verbs ending in –uir. (construir, seguir, etc.)
-er -ido -ir -ido
creer cre + ido = creído oír o + ido = oído
The following common verbs have irregular past participles:
Verb Past Participle
abrir to open abierto open
cubrir to cover cubierto covered
decir to say dicho said
escribir to write escrito written
freír to fry frito fried
hacer to do hecho done
morir to die muerto dead
poner to put puesto put
resolver to resolve resuelto resolved
romper to break roto broken
ver to see visto seen
volver to return vuelto returned
Note: compound verbs based on the irregular verbs inherit the same irregularities. Here are a few examples:
Verb Past Participle
describir to describe descrito described
devolver to return devuelto returned
50
Participios Pasados (cont.)
Most past participles can be used as adjectives. Like other adjectives, they agree in gender and number with the nouns that they modify.
La puerta está cerrada. The door is closed.
Las puertas están cerradas. The doors are closed.
El restaurante está abierto. The restaurant is open.
Los restaurantes están abiertos. The restaurants are open.
The past participle can be combined with the verb "ser" to express the passive voice. Use this construction when an action is being described, and introduce the doer of the action with the word "por."
La casa fue construida por los carpinteros. The house was built by the carpenters.
La tienda es abierta todos los días por el dueño. The store is opened every day by the owner.
El “Se” Impersonal
In English, you use they, you, one, or people in an impersonal or indefinite sense to mean “people in
general”. In Spanish, you use:
Ejemplos:
A menudo se sirve pan con la paella. One often serves bread with paella.
Se usa otros mariscos también para hacer paella. One uses other shellfish as well to make paella.

Los Mandatos Afirmativos y Negativos Tú Con Pronombres de Objetos Directos
With all affirmative commands, the object pronouncs are attached directly to the end of the command
form of the verb.
Ejemplo: Compra el libro. Cómpralo.
Buy the book. Buy it.
Note: in order to maintain the original stress of the verb, a written accent is often needed. An accent
is required any time the command has more than one syllable and you are adding one (or more)
pronoun(s). Adding two pronouns to a one-syllable command will also require a written accent.
Ejemplos: Compre. (2-syllable command) Haz. (1-syllable command)
Cómprelos. Hazla.
Cómpremelo. Házmela.
With all negative commands, the object pronouns are not attached, and instead come before the
command form of the verb.
Ejemplos: No compres el libro. No lo compres.
Don’t buy the book. Don’t buy it.

Los Mandatos Formales Usted/Ustedes
Commands are used when telling, ordering or directing someone to DO something. Formal commands are
used with people you woul address with usted or ustedes. These commands are formed using the present
tense yo form (just like the negative tú commands). The formal affirmative command and negative
commands have the same conjugation.
For –ar verbs: drop the –o ending of the “yo” form and add –e (usted) or –en (ustedes).
