Elements for Conceptual PhysicsObjective: Students will become familiar with the names and symbols for elements that will be used in future lessons.

Note: Our objective is to become familiar with elements, not to memorize them.

Elements for Conceptual PhysicsHow does this fit in? Throughout the rest of this class, we will learning about a few different elements. This includes elements that are used for nuclear power generation, observed in radioactive dating of fossils and rocks, and created in stars, as well as elements that are relevant to our location.

While students will not be required to memorize symbols, they will be working with the symbols quite a bit. Having some familiarity with them will be helpful as we get into more advanced concepts.

Elements for Conceptual PhysicsThe Periodic Table:Element Names and Chemical Symbols In today’s activity, you will be matching the element names to their chemical symbols. Chemical symbols are 1-2 letter abbreviations for elements and can be found in the periodic table. Chemical symbols may also be referred to as symbols, element symbols, or atomic symbols.

Your Task: Complete the Quizizz practice1. See Google Classroom for the Quizizz Game: “Periodic Table - Level 1 - Elements for Con Physics”

2. Use a periodic table (links in Google Classroom and on the next slide) to answer the questions. Take your time - some of the elements may be unfamiliar to you. As you play, look carefully at the images in each question. I chose each one for a reason - see if you can figure out the connections.

3. Check your score at the end.

● 80-100% accuracy - If you feel comfortable with this practice, feel free to stop here. However, feel free to take the quiz as many times as you want or need.

● 70-80% accuracy - Consider trying again, either now or later, to see if you can get a higher score.

● 0-70% accuracy - I recommend trying the extra practice first, which only asks about the first 20 elements on the periodic table. Follow the link below.

● Anyone: If you enjoy working with the periodic table, would like to become more familiar with some of the elements that are very important in biology, or just want more practice, you can follow this link for Periodic Table - Elements 1-20
