ESL POWER SPEAKING SYLLABUS

INTRODUCTION

The EV Academy ESL curriculum is the product of extensive research into the best techniques and strategies to teach and learn English. The backbone of our curriculum is the Communicative Language Teaching approach, which focuses on teaching students how to use language in real-life situations instead of being just a rote learning exercise. We value meaningful language at EV Academy, so we provide plenty of opportunities for oral expression with guided feedback.

The classes have been developed to address student learning needs, especially for those who will be using English in their studies and travels overseas. Our teachers have been given the best preparation available to be on hand when students learn, as well as give efficient correction and guidance.

Our materials and class activities adhere to the learner outcomes set by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), a standardized description of language ability. The levels describe all learners, from the breakthrough A1 stage to the advanced user at level C1. We challenge our students to meet these outcomes in class, and prepare them to be able to take on the next level up.

General overview: Our daily schedule consists of 8 daily classes, broken down into:

6 Man to Man classes (1 teacher:1 student), or MTM1 to MTM6 1 Large group class (1 teacher:8 students) or LG1 1 Small group class (1 teacher: 6 students) or SG1

1. Each of our classes is 55 minutes long.

2. A 15-minute break is given in the middle of the afternoon to allow our students to recharge and refresh their minds.

3. All four of the major language competencies of reading, writing, listening and speaking are covered in the schedule, with emphasis on practical usage and applications.

4. Our class schedule is consistent all throughout, from Beginner to Advanced.

Man to Man classes MTM1: Fluent Speaking Materials: How Now Brown Cow – A Course in Pronunciation of English by Mimi Ponsonby

Speaking for Everyday Life 1 by Scott Fisher & Brian Stuart Painless Speaking by Mary Elizabeth, M.Ed. Speaking for Everyday Life 1 by Scott Fisher & Brian Stuart Let’s Talk 3 Second Edition by Leo Jones Speaking for Everyday Life 2 by Scott Fisher & Brian Stuart

Speech demands controlling a number of diverse skills at the same time. It can serve the purpose of transmitting information, telling a story, motivating people to act or some combination of those. Sharpening one’s sensitivity to stress within words and to rhythm in longer speech can be carried into real life and finds application in real conversation.

Fluency is the ability to produce language easily and smoothly. Good speakers communicate and get their message across smoothly, even though they may make mistakes. Communication is the most important part of speaking and it is important to communicate your ideas as naturally as possible.

MTM2: Conversational English Materials: A Conversation Book 1 English in Everyday Life by Tina K. Carver & Sandra F. Riggs Top Notch Copy & Go 1 by Joan Saslow & Allen Ascher Conversation Strategies by David Kehe & Peggy D. Kehe Top Notch Copy & Go 2 by Joan Saslow & Allen Ascher Compelling Conversations & Quotations on Timeless Topics Written, compiled & edited by Eric H. Roth & Toni Aberson

The course aims to equip students with a degree of confidence in their own communication skills. This involves the many facets to developing speaking skills that go along with linguistic and sociolinguistic skills (grammar, vocabulary and usage.) Stimulating lively lessons that engage the student are a vital channel to improving fluency and expressiveness. At the same time, the activities are designed to be nonthreatening that will enable the student to develop strategic conversation skills that help the speaker/listener keep a conversation going to its natural or desired conclusion.

MTM3: The Lexicon Materials: Baron’s Essential Words for the TOEIC 3RD Edition

Vocabulary in Use Intermediate 2nd Edition by Stuart Redman Cambridge University Press English Collocations in Use by Michael McCarthy & Felicity O’Dell Cambridge University Press

Reading comprehension and vocabulary knowledge are strongly correlated. Limited vocabulary prevents students from comprehending a text. Copying definitions from the dictionary is not an effective way to learn vocabulary. They need to learn words in context, not stand alone lists that come and go on a daily basis. The course focuses on words based on context and meaning, not memorization. People think with words, therefore to improve thinking there is a need to increase one’s range of English vocabulary. How to choose a word that fits the context and has a more precise meaning is what this course provides. Approaching vocabulary in a variety of ways paves for a better understanding of the relationship between words or ideas in a structure, thus, building higher level skills in critical-creative thinking.

MTM4: Effective Communication Materials:

Activities for Building Conversations by Michael Rost Large List of English Idioms from A to Z Compelling Conversations & Quotations on Timeless Topics Written, compiled & edited by Eric H. Communication influences all factors of life. Whether working in the business community, strengthening personal relationships, or simply seeking to increase comfort in reaching out to others as a whole, effective communication is the bridge from potentially hazardous misunderstandings to personal and professional success.

Verbal and non-verbal communication shapes our interactions with others in interpersonal relationships as well as our financial and personal success, and our physical and psychological well-being. Understanding the different aspects of verbal and non-verbal communication, and the important roles they play in our interactions with others, is the first step to enhancing positive communication and nurturing relationships.

MTM5: Current Issues Materials: CNN News BBC Channel News Asia

Active Speaking Materials:

Say It Better in English Useful Phrases for Work & Everyday Life Authentic material, brought in by the teacher

New Cutting Edge Active Communication is, at its heart, a speaking class. Our teachers introduce various “target languages” for students to learn, as well as the appropriate context and situations where these expressions can be used. Practical language is the main focus of these expressions, which equip our students with the ability to use English

functionally. We study the language of everyday function, from setting up a bank account, applying for a visa and even going to the grocery store.

More advanced students will focus on higher language applications, such as job interviews, book reviews and narratives.

We give our students plenty of opportunity to practice their newly-learned skills through role plays or controlled class activities. The teacher is the facilitator, merely involved in correcting mistakes and guiding students the right way.

Small group class Presentation Materials:

Learner Outcomes TED talks Language is social in nature. We use it to communicate our ideas with other people, as well as give information to others. Presentation builds on these two concepts as it teaches students how to speak in front of an audience. We teach students how to develop a short speech based on a topic and how to address their audience with the most impact possible.

To give students a good model to follow, we show students our curation of TED talks, which are looked up to as a high standard of giving a speech or presentation.

We also help students build self-confidence in this class, which is a great way to help students overcome their apprehensions about learning a new language. Students must present at least three times a week, with the teacher and classmates giving a peer critique to bring out the most out of each speaker.
