It’s that time of year
again. School children of
immigrant parents are going
to be going home and asking
for help with their home-
work, and parents are going
to be hurriedly scurrying
from work to preparing din-
ner before going to an ESL
class.
Homework is hard, and
parent involvement is impor-
tant, so today we’re happy to
share that our program pro-
vides classes in ESL, GED,
Computer Literacy, Conver-
sation Practice, Citizenship
study at no cost to parents to
help them stay involved
while making sure their chil-
dren are succeeding. It is painfully obvious that
students of immigrant par-
ents are failing to tap their
full potential within the con-
straints of traditional class-
rooms.
We are pleased to report
that schools in all 5 counties
where we exist have pro-
vided class space for our
tutors and the parents who
drop off and pick up their
school children and stay for a
class.
Therefore, parents are
now helping their school
children with homework and
other school activities.
We receive many acco-
lades from ESL school
teachers thanking us as their
classes are running more
smoothly since parents are
helping at home. As we work hard to con-
tinue to meet our mission of
educating non-English
speakers in our communities,
I’m delighted to share that
our program has received
tremendous growth since we
started in 2004 - from six
students with one tutor to our
current 482 students with
205 tutors (helping over
5,000 diversified families in
the 13 years of our exis-
tence). This dramatic improve-
ment in our growth is due in
part to the very generous
donations received to pur-
chase the instructional books
for students, the very active
support and dedication of our
tutors, and our working
Board of Directors.
I’m sure that you understand
the immigrant children in your
community are not their choice
for being there. And if you
sometimes think "how can I
make a difference to make the
world better" we have one
word for you: VOLUNTEER
by contacting our volunteer
service organization: ESL In-
Home Program of Northern
Nevada.
With our training in how to
teach ESL, you can help the
parents of these children with
basic English skills so that the
parents can help their children
with homework and other
school activities; thereby grow-
ing up with the skills needed to
succeed and become productive
members as adults.
(Adult education program
seeks to break cycle of gen-
erational poverty): “The prob-
lem of generational poverty
does not belong to one single
generation. Whether it’s a
grandparent taking classes so
he/she can read bedtime stories
to grandchildren, a parent earn-
ing a GED to help his/her chil-
dren with their math homework
or a high school student taking
extra courses to ensure he/she
graduates —education is often
what makes the difference in
breaking the cycle of genera-
tional poverty.” The tutors in
the ESL In-Home Program’s
adult education no-cost-to-
student classes see many dif-
ferent ethnic groups come
through the doors of our nu-
merous locations throughout
Northern Nevada. Our chal-
lenge is in recruiting tutors
throughout Northern Nevada.
We have a huge wait-list.
If you have a passion for
literacy and would like to
help, call 775-888-2021 or
Email: [email protected] No teaching experience
nor knowledge of a foreign
language required. We will
train you in 45 minutes on
how to teach English as a Sec-
ond Language at your conven-
ience. Help one of the over
900 adults we have on a wait-
list who are anxious to learn.
We also have refugees in
Reno who want to learn our
language.
The rewards you will re-
ceive are immeasurable.
ESL SCHOOL CHILDREN NEED PARENTS’ HELP
Thank you to Abby and Maria - High
School students in Douglas County—
who came to our ESL class in Gardner-
ville. They helped explain in Spanish sev-
eral confusing things about the English
Language to our non-English speaking
adult students.
Our students were enthusiastic and
asked them a lot of questions that only
someone fluent in Spanish and English
could answer. For example, why do
adjectives come before nouns?
Why are there words that sound
the same but mean different
things?
Maria and Abby also gave them
a pep talk about speaking English as
much as they possibly can. And not
to worry about making mistakes. It
is the easiest way to learn.
They are coming again and they
make a great team! STUDENTS HELPING STUDENTS

AN ESL TUTOR’S TESTIMONIAL
From:Reno Tutor,
Mehdi Rahimi
“It was over a year
ago when I emailed Flor-
ence to join her ESL-In-
Home Program as a vol-
unteer.
I met her shortly after
that and started a class
within a week or so.
Since then, I've had the
privilege of working with
over 10 adult immigrant
students.
We finished two Eng-
lish pronunciation
classes and right now, we
are in the middle of a
grammar workshop
which we're expecting to
finish in about 6 months.
I can't even begin to say
how much all these
classes have helped me,
let alone the students.
I, myself am a for-
eigner here in U.S. and I
can completely under-
stand the importance of
speaking English fluently.
I also understand the extra
effort that a native
speaker needs to put in to
read or listen to my not-so
-perfect English. Luckily,
most people are so kind
and forgiving that they
accept my accent, mis-
takes and mispronuncia-
tions.
But that doesn't mean I don't
need to try hard to learn
and improve my English.
That's why I consider my-
self as one of the students
in my classes. The only
difference is that I need to
study twice, once before
the class to prepare the
material and once in the
class with everyone else.
For years, I went to
many English classes
back in my home country
but it was here that I
learned how much more I
needed to work on my
English.
The ESL-In-Home
Program has enabled us to
work together and im-
prove our speaking. I
want to thank ESL-In-
Home, …...this program
which is run by-a-one-
person organization!
Carson City Tutor, Tommy Hughes (left) and one of his 4 long-
time students, Oscar V. They both say that they are a family.
Oscar says Tommy is “Uncle” Tommy; Tommy says Oscar is a
“nephew”.
Oscar’s whole family is involved with improving their language
skills. Oscar has been an ESL student since 10/2015. Because
of his job they can only meet in the evenings and is progressing
fast in his English skills that he is now an important employee..
