With the cold weather fast approaching, it becomes more important than ever that ALL Grade 7 & 8 students have a plan for their lunch hour. The safety and well-being of all of our students at ÉSKS is of the utmost importance. Since ÉSKS does not provide any formal supervision over the lunch hour, all students in Grade 7 and Grade 8 who are not part of the paid Lunch Program or who have not paid the drop-in fee are

expected to leave the building and the school grounds

over the lunch hour.

This Parent Run Lunch Program is available on a full-@me or drop-in basis. The cost of this program is the same as our Elementary Lunch Program and operates in a similar manner. Families can choose to pay a full-@me fee of $230.00 for the en@re school year or a daily drop-in fee of $3.00. Families may also choose to have their child(ren) par@cipate in the Lunch Program only during the cold weather months, November to the end of March, at a cost of $115.00. Informa@on regarding the Elementary & Junior High Lunch Program is available in the school office.

During the school year there may be @mes when school bus transporta@on is cancelled due to inclement weather or poor driving condi@ons, but schools will remain open.

School bus transporta@on for all school divisions in the City of Winnipeg is cancelled when the wind chill reaches -45° Celsius by 6:15 a.m. based on the Environment Canada readings at the Winnipeg Airport. The temperature readings can be found at the Environment Canada website (hp://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca). The following media outlets are contact in the early morning to ask that they broadcast and/or post the informa@on:

Please note: Some media outlets will broadcast and post the

informaon to their websites.

Parents/Guardians can also phone the Transporta@on Department at (204) 775-0231 extension 224 or (204) 789-0409/(204) 789-0421 for informa@on. Severe weather condi@ons and poor roads may extend the running @me of some buses, resul@ng in late arrival and departure. Parents/Guardians should make sure that children are suitably clothed un@l picked up and that they have a place to go in the event the bus does not arrive or is late. Parents/Guardians must also ensure that children have a place to go a;er the return trip.

When bus transporta!on is cancelled in the

morning, it will not resume later in the

day even if weather condi!ons

improve.

Indoor recess During the winter months, the wind chill is checked before morning recess, lunch @me and a;ernoon recess. Students are expected to dress appropriately for the weather at all @mes. As per WSD policy, students will be kept indoors only on inclement days when the wind chill reaches –28° Celsius. When the wind chill is between –25° to –27°, students may go out for a shortened 10 minute recess. At @mes, parents and guardians have requested by a note to the classroom teacher or a phone call to the school, to have their child remain indoors at recess @me. It is our school’s belief that if a students is too sick to go outdoors at recess, then he or she is too sick to be at school. We would ask parents and guardians to send children to school only when they are well enough to par@cipate in all ac@vi@es, including recess.

ÉSKS Patrols

Now that the weather is geUng cooler, our patrols need to be dressing appropriately when they are on post.

Jackets, mis, scarves, ski pants and hats are all cold-weather gear. Please

make sure you are coming dressed for your week!

With the colder weather comes icy condi@ons. Please be aware of our patrols out on post while you are driving, for your safety and theirs!

Koats for Kids has been a Winnipeg ins@tu@on since 1989. Every year, from October to February, the program distributes winter outerwear to families – for some children, having a warm coat means a>ending school on a cold day, instead of staying home. It’s part of United Way’s commitment to helping children and youth be all they can be. If your child is in need of warm winter clothing, please connect with his/her classroom teacher who will place an order for you. Unfortunately, The Koats for Kids Volunteer Centre is not open to the public, so all requests must go to your child’s classroom teacher.

What’s Happening In Art … Ms. Kmet

Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive Leadership Group

The Leadership group is excited to encourage others to give back.

In conjunc@on with Winnipeg Harvest, we are encouraging the whole school to donate non-perishable food items. Our theme for this year is ‘bring an item for each hand’

and our goal is 1,500 food items!

The ÉSKS Leadership Food Drive runs from Monday, December 3rd to Friday, December 14th.

Please support this worthwhile endeavor and donate all you can!

5/6 Music We have been busy playing recorders, learning new notes, and learning “O’Canada”. Students will be doing recorder karate and star@ng to learn bucket drumming. Grade 7 Band Students have been busy learning all the basics of being in band and have made the decision for band or art. We are busy learning the first 5 notes of the concert Bb scale and will be using those notes to make all kinds of music. It’s really amazing how much can be done with just 5 notes!

Grade 8 Band The Grade 8 band students has been playing music from their Standard of Excellence method book. We have been working on featured pieces “Sawmill Creek” and “Montego Bay”. Band members who have switched to percussion are learning new instruments and have done an excellent job taking on their new role in the band.

Grade 7/8 Choir This group performed beau@fully at our Remembrance Day service. They sang an unaccompanied version of “Dona Nobis Pacem” (Give Us Peace) which led into the “Song of Peace” which incorporated original text that partnered with the words from “Dona Nobis Pacem”. The choir will be featured in concert with the Canadian vocal group, The Tenors at the Centennial Concert Hall on December 11th. The concert will start at 8:00 pm. Tickets are available through the box office at the concert hall. More informa@on will be sent home with choir members closer to the show date!

Music News Mr. Oberheu

Squiggly lines, different shapes and much more! Those were the required elements to complete the self-portrait drawing project. Congratula@ons to Grade 8 student Cris@ana (Rm. 214 ), December's Ar@st of the Month who successfully met the criteria for the drawing of the self-portrait using the blind contour drawing technique. Using only a mirror and pencil, Cris@ana sketched her self-portrait with out looking down at the paper. Once she completed her sketch, she turned her paper upside down and proceeded to repeat the process. The end result is a colourful self-portrait comprised of interes@ng shapes and wavy lines. Awesome work!

that they can wear for Phys. Ed. at school at all mes.
