Outcome orientation can be the Achilles Heel of the conventional solutions consulting industry which tends to be based on delivering intangible and fuzzy results as opposed to the measurable and specific.

Solutions-based consultants can hide away from the ineffectiveness of the solutions towards achieving an outcome by citing implementation deficits, unpredictable sudden market shifts or poor client resource.

Consultancies who offer a money back guarantee are few and far between but the fundamental principle of Payment by Results (PbR) is central to Eskil’s work.

When the directors of Eskil sat down to develop a new solution for the market, we asked ourselves a simple question: “how do we successfully delivery high-quality work to clients where all stakeholder expectations are met?”

By outsourcing all non-core, non-strategically-critical functions, Eskil is a lean business and this helps to maintain high performance from all retained parties whilst also giving us the financial flexibility to incorporate PbR where payments are contingent on the independent verification of results.

Eskil’s model is the product of extensive consultation with clients, associates and potential partners as we sought to understand what was generally considered to be missing from their relationship with consultancies.

Once we had gathered data, we were able to develop an approach founded on building customer-centered solutions: securing feedback and insights from clients and then signing up to appropriate partnerships in order to deliver innovative approaches to delivering projects & consultancy.

We have been able to achieve this in 4 particular ways:

Value management - identifying all (positive and negative) outcomes of delivery and, through part-research and part-forecast, applying a dollar value to it. The outcomes and values are determined by an independent organisation and are mutually-agreed, forming the basis for determining the budget of the delivery team;

Facilitated Network - building a bespoke delivery team by accessing our long-established network of independent consultants. Using our performance monitoring model to ensure that the outcome metrics are being achieved and if there is client-driven drift, we highlight this to ensure that expectations are managed;

Diamond, not pyramid - many consultancy models are pyramid-shaped with the majority of fees charged for the lower-skilled resource at the bottom but paid to the people at the top. Eskil’s diamond is heavy across the middle where the ‘talent’ exists - independent consultants with a minimum of 15 years’ experience. This also means that, from a scalability perspective we can satisfy needs for interim executives, single-team projects, spot consultancy and more;

Payment by Results (PbR) - holding a percentage of the fees until the independent organization verifies that all metrics were achieved.

THE DIFFERENCE

The Partners of Eskil have extensive experience in Facilitated Networks - the design, build, contract management and relationship management of flexible professional teams.

Whereas a management consultancy will provide a team based on the availability of their people (including those on the bench / beach), Eskil builds teams of highly experienced professionals that deliver specifically what is required. An Eskil team is focused on building a strong reputation through successful delivery.

Whilst an interim management company will be able to build a team of independent consultants to deliver to the client, there is a reluctance to take on any liability. Eskil takes on responsibility at all stages from the initial business case where stakeholders are engaged, through to performance management and mentoring of the teams all the way to deferring the settlement fee until the outcomes have been independently verified.

We have been working with Associates and Partners since 2001 and, through our Capability Framework (ECF), we map the skills, experience and expertise of the people that we work with.

The ECF is designed to provide standard terms of reference on meeting potential members of our Talent Stream as well as a common language for geographically diverse colleagues to work to. This also serves as a basic roadmap for the Associate to develop their own skill sets.

The assessment criteria includes the extent of their experience in a specific discipline, sector, circumstance (e.g. crisis management) as well as second language, size of budgets managed, and profile of programmes / projects delivered.
