But providing for “always on” productivity, especially in a distributed enterprise with multiple remote locations, is not an easy task. The additional hardware and management required are not only expensive, but they also complicate the IT landscape. Most organizations are looking for ways to deliver what the business needs without the additional costs and headaches. Recent ESG research bears this out. As Figure 1 shows, when asked what considerations were most important for justifying IT investments, 35% of ESG research respondents chose ROI, 32% selected business process improvement, and 27% indicated reduction in OpEx. 1 Organizations are willing to invest in IT solutions that provide a good return while improving business processes and reducing costs. Figure 1. Top Five Most Important Criteria in Justifying IT Investments Source: Enterprise Strategy Group, 2016. Very often, remote locations (for example, retail outlets of large chains) are an organization’s closest link to customers, making their application and data availability essential to maximizing revenue and limiting liability. Applications at the business’s remote sites are often critical, and trying to keep them up and running continuously while working to reduce costs is an ongoing struggle. 1 Source: ESG Research Report, 2016 IT Spending Intentions Survey, January 2016. 22% 27% 32% 35% 39% Improved regulatory compliance Reduc[on in opera[onal expenditures (i.e., labor, u[li[es, materials and other ongoing costs associated with opera[ng an applica[on, system, or business process) Business process improvement Return on investment Improved security/risk management Which of the following considera4ons do you believe will be most important in jus4fying IT investments to your organiza4on’s business management team over the next 12 months? WhyThisMatters

System uptime and high availability are crucial for geographically distributed organizations with a large

number of remote branches or offices. More often than not, each remote location serves as the first

interactionwithacustomer.Thisisespeciallytrueintheretailspace,wheresystemdowntimeatastorecan

distributedorganizations.Withjusttwoserverson-premisesandacentrallylocatedNSHservicethatservesas
