On Saturday 5th October, the Club held our

annual Obedience Trial as part of the DOGS

NSW State Titles weekend. Rain and

thunderstorms threatened in the morning, but it

was an overall good day by all who attended.

There was great success in the Novice Ring,

where Mrs V Gresser and her Aussie Shepherd

Rozate Blade Runner CCD RE won the ring and

the President’s trophy for highest scoring dog or

bitch at the trial with a score of 199 out of a

possible 200 points!

Congratulations to those who had success at the

trial and commiserations to those who missed

out. A big thank you goes to our Trial Secretary

Julie Brandon, Chief Steward Heather Martyn,

Lodi Kramer and Jason Lau for the catering and

all our judges, stewards and helpers on the day.

President’s Report 2019

It’s a privilege to present the President's report for

2019.

It has been another busy year and the club has

successfully run about 13 classes every Sunday, from

puppies through to Class 4, including obedience and

Activity class. We’ve also managed to maintain a

steady stream of new members wanting to participate

in our popular RDO and puppy programs. I would like

to thank all instructors and trainee instructors who give

their time freely to run these classes, and to the

helpers who look after the desk and set up equipment

for all our members.

At last year’s fun day, we managed to raise over $600

for Canine cancer research. I would like to thank

Sandra Walker for suggesting we donate to such a

worthy cause, and those who donated prizes and

helped sell raffle tickets on that day. I hope we

manage to raise even more money at this year’s fun

day event.

Late last year the Club sponsored a Delta therapy Dog

team on behalf of a club member. The team who we

currently sponsor is one of our own members, Julie

Brandon and her dog Lucy. I would like to take this

opportunity to sincerely thank the member who

sponsored the past and current teams in the club's

name. This generous gesture will allow those who

have no access or interaction to animals a moment of

happiness while in hospital or living in a nursing home.

Last year we also raised $550 for the “Buy a bale”

campaign at our Annual obedience trial. Thank you to

Julie Brandon for the suggestion, and those who

helped sell raffle tickets on the day. Our committee

and helpers are busy organising this year’s event,

which will be held on Saturday 5th October. A special

thank you to our Trial Secretary Julie Brandon, our

Chief Steward Heather Martyn, Leonie Kelly and all

Club members who have offered their time to help on

the day. Best of luck to all our members who will be

competing in this year’s event.

The Club van is now well and truly integrated into the

running of the club on Sunday mornings. Special

thanks go to Robert Fairhead for taking the Van during

the break for servicing and rego, and to the drivers and

helpers who unpack and load the van. I would also like

to thank Centennial parklands for not only allowing us

to house the club van safely in their compound, but

also allowing us to run classes here on Sunday

mornings and keeping our ground fees low.

We recently managed to secure a storage unit at a

reduced rate, which will now allow us to safely store in

one place our club archives, memorabilia and unused

equipment. This will ease the burden for those current

club members who have been housing these items in

their garages for many years. I would like to thank Jan

Cooke for sourcing and organising the unit, Lodi

Kramer for donating shelving in memory of his dog

Neo, and I sincerely thank the club members past and

present for keeping these items safe for us.

I would now like to acknowledge the hard work and the

commitment of three committee members that are

stepping down this year. Our current treasurer Sherlyn

Koo, publicity officer Robert Fairhead and general

committee member Jan Evans. Thank you for your

years on the committee, and the valuable support you

have given me and other members at the club. Your

contribution to committee will be sorely missed!

Lastly, I would like to thank everyone for allowing me

the honour of being your president for the past 3 years.

I found it challenging but also rewarding, and I have

confidence that the incoming president will be forward-

thinking and embrace any positive change that will

benefit the club. I also look forward to working with the

incoming committee and serving the club as your next

treasurer.

Secretary’s Report 8th September, 2019. The club over the past twelve months has continued to

promote responsible dog ownership through the

beginner courses for puppies and adult dogs and the

further training in Classes 1 to 4 where both dogs and

handlers continue to develop their skills in obedience

training.

The club’s trialling tradition has continued with

members Club members participated in the Interclub

Obedience Challenge in July this year with a few from

Class 4 trialling their dogs for the first time in the

Community Companion Dog Class which is the first of

the obedience titles. The clubs’ annual trial will be held

on Saturday 5th October as part of the NSW State

Obedience Titles at the German Shepherd Grounds of

the Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affair at Orchard

Hills. Whist it is quite a distance to travel I would

encourage members to make the trip to see what is

possible for dogs to achieve with persistent training.

Membership as of the 1st September stands at 345 of

which 19 are Life Members, 109 are renewals and 217

new members.

Lastly one of our Life Members, Grahame Brown, has

now stopped attending stamp auctions where he sold

the used stamps, donated by members, with the

proceeds going to the Guide Dog Association. I would

like to thank Grahame for his tireless efforts and the

members who supplied the stamps over decades to

support this important charity.

FESTIVE FOODS TO AVOID!

With the holiday season fast approaching certain

festive foods are fine for us to eat but can be lethal

to our beloved pets. This article highlights some

foods and drinks that we should be wary of.

Avocado

This fruit contains a toxic substance called persin.

It is found in avocado leaves, seeds and even the

bark of the tree. The Guatemalan variety (common

in stores) is especially rich in this substance.

Although this substance is not especially toxic to

dogs, mild stomach upset can occur if your pet

eats a substantial amount of it. The pit, though,

can cause obstruction in the gastrointestinal tract if

swallowed.

Bread Dough Raw bread dough made with live yeast, when

swallowed, can cause the yeast to multiply in the

moist environment in the stomach. This expansion

can lead to decreased blood flow to the stomach

wall, resulting in death of the tissue. The

expanding stomach can also press on the

diaphragm resulting in difficulty in breathing. As

well as this, as the yeast multiplies, it produces

alcohols that can result in intoxication. This can

lead to, in extreme cases, to death.

Chocolate Chocolate contains a substance called

theobromine. This substance can lead to vomiting,

increased thirst, abdominal discomfort,

restlessness to severe agitation, muscle tremors,

irregular heartbeat, high body temperature,

seizures and death. The rule of thumb is the

darker the chocolate, the more dangerous.

I wrote an article on this a couple of years ago

after a friend of mine lost her beloved Shetland

sheepdog when he ate a block of dark chocolate.

Page 10: ESDTC Annual Obedience Trial

10

Eastern Suburbs Dog Training Club Inc. November 2019 Newsletter

Ethanol Dogs are much more sensitive to alcohol than

humans. In severe cases, coma, seizures and

death may occur. Sweet alcoholic drinks are very

appealing to dogs so please be careful. Any dog

that is so drunk that it can’t stand up must be

taken to the vet!

Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and raisins have recently been associated

with kidney failure in dogs. The exact cause is not

clear. Some dogs can appear to eat a few without

problems, others do so for a while only to become

very ill later on. Signs of grape and raisin toxicity

are vomiting, lethargy or diarrhoea within 12 hours

of eating. As the dogs becomes more ill, there can

be an increase in urination or no urination in later

stages. Death due to kidney failure occurs after 3

or 4 days.

Hops Hops are used to brew beer. Home kits for this can

be found in many supermarkets. Both fresh and

cooked are dangerous. Affected dogs can develop

an uncontrollably high body temperature (greater

than 42 Celsius) which results in damage to and

failure of multiple organ systems. Symptoms

include restlessness, excessive panting, muscle

tremors and seizures.

Although these are unlikely to cause death in

dogs, the nuts can cause very uncomfortable

symptoms that can last up to 48 hours. These

include weakness in the hind legs, pain, tremors

and low grade fever.

Moldy Food A wide variety of molds grow on foods and some

produce toxins which can cause serious and even

life-threatening problems if ingested by dogs.

Signs of this type of poisoning begin as fine

muscle tremors that progress to total body tremors

and finally to convulsions that can lead to death in

severe cases. If you can’t eat it, neither can your

dog!

Onions and Garlic All close relatives of the onion family (shallots,

garlic, scallions, etc) contain compounds that can

damage dogs’ red blood cells if eaten in sufficient

quantities. The rule of thumb is “the stronger it is,

the more toxic it is”. Garlic tends to be more toxic

than onions. While dogs may be able to tolerate a

small amount of these vegetables, exposure to

concentrated forms such as onion soup mix

powder or garlic powder puts them at risk to

poisoning. The damage to red blood cells doesn’t

become apparent for about 3 to 5 days. Affected

dogs appear weak or reluctant to move. They may

appear to tire easily. Their urine may be orange-

tinged to dark red in colour. In severe cases, blood

transfusions may be needed.

Xylitol Xylitol is a calorie-free sweetener that is used in

sugar-free gum as well as sugar-free baked

goods. In dogs, xylitol can lead to a rapid and

severe drop in blood sugar levels. Dogs may

develop disorientation and seizures within 30

minutes of eating products containing this

substance or signs can be delayed for several

hours. Some dogs who have ingested large

amounts of this substance can develop liver

failure, which can be fatal.

Caffeine Caffeine can damage the heart, lungs, kidneys

and central nervous system of dogs. Signs

include restlessness, hyperactivity and vomiting

followed by panting, weakness, a staggering gate,

increased heart rate, muscle tremors and

convulsions. Caffeine can be found in coffee and

coffee drinks as well as large amounts of tea. Do

not share your drinks with your dog.

Apple seeds, cherry pips, peach, apricot

and plum stones These contain the toxin cyanide. Symptoms of

cyanide poisoning include vomiting, heavy

breathing, fast heart rate, cardiac arrhythmias and

coma.

Club Dog Leads The club sells varying sizes of dog leads made

from strong but soft cotton weave material that is

great for not only Sunday morning training sessions at the club,

but also long walks with your four legged friend. We sell leads ranging

from 3ft to 10ft long.

3ft & 4ft 6 inch long leads cost $8

10ft long lead cost $12

So if you are looking for a new soft comfortable lead or your current lead is uncomfortable to hold

during training and out on dog walks, come to the front desk on Sunday and we’ll help get the right

lead for you and your dog.

Potato peelings, green potatoes and

rhubarb leaves

These contain oxalates, which can affect the

digestive, nervous, and urinary systems.

Tobacco

This contains nicotine, which affects the digestive

and nervous systems. Symptoms include a rapid

heart beat, collapse, coma, and death. Keep your

dog away from ashtrays and cigarette butts.

If you're a fan of Austalia's foremost

children's author and illustrator May Gibbs,

then you should visit Nutcote in Neutral Bay

during the holiday break. The trust is

celebrating May Gibb's birthday and

honoring her Scottish Terrier calling the day

"Scotty Day at Nutcote". It will be held on

Sunday 19th January, 2020 and for more

information visit their website:

Too Wet Or Hot To Train ?

If you wake to a wet or threatening Sunday or

the temperature soars beyond 30 Degrees,

then check our Facebook page or call the Club

for a status update on 0412 645 154 after

7:30am. Please note: We cannot respond to

text or voice messages.

Footwear! The Club reminds Members that

thongs, slip-ons and open shoes are not

appropriate footwear for training your dog. For

instance, the flip flopping of thongs and slip-

ons can distract your dog or another handler’s

dog while doing heeling exercises.

There is also the danger of slipping while doing

right and left about turns, fast pace or jumps

(for the higher classes). Should an incident

occur and dogs start snapping at each other,

your toes and the soft parts of your feet are

highly exposed. So please wear covered shoes

when training your dog.

With the aim of providing a

safe training environ-

ment for all dogs and

handlers the club

has implemented the

following procedure:

After a serious attack by a dog on a

person or another dog (as judged by

senior club members

who are present on the day of the attack)

the offending dog must wear a basket muzzle if

it is to continue attending classes at ESDTC.

Aggressive Dog Procedure

The Club now sells Yellow “Give Me Space” Dog Bandanas. This campaign

is run by Yellow Dog Australia and is aimed at educating dog fanciers and the

general public about the meaning of a yellow bandana, yellow ribbon or yellow

vest to help assist dogs that need more space from time to time.

By using a yellow bandana, fellow club members will understand that your dog may require more

space when you train at the club on Sunday mornings. You can purchase a bandana for $15 at the

information desk on Sunday mornings by asking one of our helpful volunteers who will advise you on

size and how to attach the bandana to your dog’s collar.

“Give Me Space” Dog Bandanas

No Smoking at the Info Desk For the comfort and safety of volunteers and

members, the information desk is a smoke free

zone. Please refrain from smoking in and around

that area.
