IntroductionUsing the buttons and dial on the ESC-1 face-plate, you can set up the controller to operateautomatically, using programs. You can also runprograms and stations manually, without mak-ing changes to the existing programs.

This manual provides step-by-step instructionsfor programming and operating the ESC-1.

Controls & IndicatorsBefore beginning, take a moment to familiarizeyourself with the controller’s faceplate. Thefollowing are short descriptions of each buttonand indicator.

➊ ON: Press to turn a setting on or to advancethe setting in the display.

➋ OFF: Press to turn a setting off or to decreasethe setting in the display.

➌ PGM: Press to select the program. The indi-cator in the display cycles through programsA, B, C, and D.

➍ MAN START/ADV: Press to advance to thenext setting in the display or to start anoperation.

➎ FAULT RESET: Press to clear the fault read-ing from the display. Press this button afteryou have fixed a short circuit identified bythe controller.

➏ PUMP/MV STATUS: This light indicates thatthe Master Valve 1 (MV1) circuit is enabledfor the active station.

➐ STATION STATUS: This light indicates that astation valve is active.

➑ CENTRAL CONTROL: This light indicatesthat the controller is in the central controlposition and is physically linked to thecentral control system.

➊ EVEN DAY CYCLE: This light indicates thatthe controller’s active program will water oneven days of the month.

➋ ODD DAY CYCLE: This light indicates thatthe controller’s active program will water onodd days of the month.

➌ CYCLICAL DAY CYCLE: This light indicatesthat the controller’s active program willwater in a cycle with a specified number ofdays.

➍ CUSTOM DAY CYCLE: This light indicatesthat the controller’s active program willwater on specific days of the week.

➎ PROGRAMMING DIAL: Used to programand operate various functions of the control-ler.

Quick Programming GuideBefore you begin programming the ESC-1, werecommend that you write down the stationsconnected to the controller on the ESC-1 QuickProgramming Guide.

You can find a blank copy of this form inside thedoor of the controller.

Programming InstructionsSet Time & DateTo program the controller, you must first set theinternal clock and calendar:

➊ Turn the dial to TIME/CALENDAR. The hourdigits in the display flash.

➋ Use the arrow keys to set the hour to thecurrent time.

NOTE: The 60 Hz model displays timein 12-hour am/pm mode. The 50 Hzmodel displays time in 24-hour mode.If you have a 60 Hz model, the am/pmdesignation changes as you pass 12:00.

➌ Press MAN START/ADV. The minute digitsflash.

➍ Use the arrow keys to set the minutes to thecurrent time.

➎ Press MAN START/ADV. A new displayappears with the day, month, and year. Themonth flashes.

➏ Use the arrow keys to set the month, day, andyear the same way you set the hour andminutes.

➐ Press MAN START/ADV to return to the timeof day display. The hour continues to flash aslong as the dial is left at TIME/CALENDAR.

➑ Return the dial to AUTO. The display showsthe day of the week and time of day.

Select ProgramThe ESC-1 offers four program settings: A, B, C,and D. You can set each program to water ac-cording to your needs.

➊ Press PGM to cycle through the availableprograms.

➋ The program indicator on the far left side ofthe display shows the currently selectedprogram, A, B, C, or D.

NOTE: We recommend that you enterall information for one program beforeyou begin another program. Switchingback and forth between programs canbe confusing.

Select Watering CycleEach program can operate in one of four cyclemodes. All programs default to the CUSTOMcycle.

• CUSTOM waters on the days of the week youselect.

• CYCLICAL waters according to a cycle with aspecified number of days.

• ODD waters only on odd-numbered days ofthe month.

• EVEN waters only on even days of themonth.

Even / Odd DaysTo set a program to water on ODD or EVEN days:

➊ Turn the dial to ODD DAYS or EVEN DAYS.The display shows the selected program andODD or EVEN. If the display shows USED,the program is active and using a differentcycle mode. If this is the case, any changesyou make will override the previous cyclesetting.

➋ Press PGM to display the program you wantto set or change.

➌ Press ON. The display shows either ODD orEVEN, and the corresponding light on thefaceplate comes on.

➍ Return the dial to AUTO. The controllerdisplays the time of day.

NOTE: The 31st day of the monthdefaults to ON. If you do not want towater on the 31st, you must set that dayto OFF. For more information, see “SetEvent Day Off” on page 10 .

CyclicalTo set a program to water at specified intervals:

➊ Turn the dial to CYCLICAL. The left side ofthe display shows the number of days re-maining in the cycle. The right side showsthe total number of days in the cycle. Thenumber on the right flashes.

If the display shows USED, the program isactive and using a different cycle mode. Tochange the program, continue followingthese steps.

➋ Press PGM to display the program you wantto set or change.

➌ Press ON. The cyclical display appears, andthe cyclical light on the faceplate comes on.The number on the right of the displayflashes.

If the number on the left flashes after youpush ON, press MAN START/ADV to selectthe number on the right.

➍ Use the arrow keys to set the number of daysin the cycle. For example, if you set a 3-daycycle, the controller skips two days andwaters on the third day.

➎ Press MAN START/ADV to select the numberon the left side of the display. This numberflashes.

➏ Use the arrow keys to set the number of daysremaining before the next watering day. Thistells the controller where today is in the cycleyou have just set.

➐ Return the dial to AUTO. The controllerdisplays the time of day.

CustomTo set a program to water on specified days:

➊ Turn the dial to CUSTOM. The display showsthe program and CUSTOM.

If the display shows USED, the program isactive and using a different cycle mode. Tochange the program, continue followingthese steps.

➋ Press PGM to display the program you wantto set or change.

➌ Press ON. The display shows CUSTOM andthe custom light on the faceplate comes on.

➍ Turn the dial to the first day of the week. Usethe ON and OFF keys to turn the day on oroff. The display shows the day and the ON/OFF setting.

➎ Repeat step 4 for all days of the week.

➏ Return the dial to AUTO. The controllerdisplays the time of day.

Set Station Watering TimesWithin the program you are setting, you can setthe length of a station’s watering time from 0minutes to 12 hours. Set the time in one-minuteincrements for up to two hours and in 10-minute increments from two hours to 12 hours.

➊ Turn the dial to STATION WATERING TIME.The display shows the program, the stationnumber, and the length of watering time.The station number flashes. If the station isincluded in any other program, the control-ler will display USED.

➋ Press PGM to display the program you wantto set or change.

➌ Use the arrow keys to change the number onthe left side of the screen until it displays thestation number you want to set.

➍ Press MAN START/ADV to select the num-bers on the right side of the screen. Thesenumbers flash.

➎ Use the arrow keys to set the length of water-ing time. If USED shows, you can still set thelength of time. (You can include the samestation in different programs and give thatstation different lengths of watering time.)

➏ Return the dial to AUTO. The controllerdisplays the time of day.

Set Program Start Time(s)You may assign each program up to eight starttimes per day, available on the quarter hour.

➊ Turn the dial to WATERING START TIME. Thedisplay shows the program, the number ofthe start time, and the start time. The num-ber of the start time flashes.

➋ Press PGM to display the program you wantto set or change.

➌ Use the arrow keys to select one of the eightstart times. Any unprogrammed start timewill display OFF on the right side of thescreen.

➍ Press MAN START/ADV to toggle to the rightside of the display. The start time flashes.

➎ Us the arrow keys to select a start time. Starttimes are available in fifteen minute inter-vals, with an OFF setting available betweenthe 11:45 pm and 12:00 am options on the 60Hz (23:45 and 24:00 on the 50 Hz model).

NOTE: Start times appear in chrono-logical order. If you add a start time ordelete one by setting it OFF, the con-troller automatically reorganizes thetimes so that they appear in chrono-logical order. This reorganizing occurswhen you move the dial off WATERINGSTART TIMES.

➏ If you want to set additional start times,press MAN START/ADV to select the left sideof the display and the next available starttime number. Set the next start time in thesame way as the first.

➐ Return the dial to AUTO. The controllerdisplays the time of day.

Set Program Stack / OverlapYou can set a program to stack (run one at atime) or overlap (run simultaneously). TheESC-1 can run up to nine valves simultaneously.The default setting is to stack all programs.

➊ Turn the dial to PROGRAM OVERLAP. Thedisplay shows the program and STACK orOVERLAP.

➋ Press PGM to display the program you wantto set or change.

➌ Use the arrow keys to set the program toeither STACK or OVERLAP.

➍ Return the dial to AUTO. The controllerdisplay the time of day.

Set MV/Pump StartThe ESC-1 has two master valve terminals on itscircuit board. The operation of any stationactivates MV2 (master valve 2). You can activateor deactivate MV1 (master valve 1) for eachindividual station.

➊ Turn the dial to MV PUMP START. Thedisplay shows the station number and MVON or OFF. The station number flashes.

➋ Use the arrow keys to select the stationnumber.

➌ Press MAN START/ADV to toggle to the rightside of the display. ON or OFF flashes.

➍ Press either the ON or OFF key.

➎ If you want to set another station, press MANSTART/ADV to return to the left side of thedisplay and continue setting stations.

➏ When you finish setting stations, return thedial to AUTO. The controller displays thetime of day.

Set Rain DelayThe ESC-1 lets you delay watering for a specifiednumber of days. The rain delay setting affects allprograms.

➊ Turn the dial to RAIN DELAY. The displayshows RAIN DELAY and the number of daysuntil the next cycle.

➋ Use the arrow keys to set the number of daysto the next cycle.

➌ Return the dial to AUTO. The controllerdisplays the time of day and delays wateringfor the number of days you specified.

➍ To cancel a Rain Delay, reset the number ofdays to 0.

Set Water BudgetThe water budget feature lets you increase ordecrease a program’s watering time in incre-ments of one percent without having to reset thetiming for each station in the program. You canset the budget for 0% to 300%. You can use the0% setting to shut a program down temporarily.

➊ Turn the dial to WATER BUDGET. The displayshows the program and the water budgetpercentage.

➋ Press PGM to display the program you wantto set or change.

➌ Use the arrow keys to set the percentage.

➍ Return the dial to AUTO. The controllerdisplays the time of day.

The default percentage for all programs is100%. If the water budget for a program is setto other than 100%, WATER BUDGET showsin the display when you select that program.

Set Event Day OffThe Event Day Off feature lets you temporarilyskip watering on specific days of the month.After a selected date passes, that day returns tothe default setting. The default setting for alldays is ON.

If you set the 31st to OFF, it remains off until youset it back to ON. This feature is useful in areasthat prohibit irrigation consecutive days, such asthe on the 31st and the 1st.

➊ Turn the dial to EVENT DAY OFF. The displayshows the day of the month on the left sideand the ON or OFF setting on the right. Theday of the month flashes.

➋ Use the arrow keys to set the day of themonth you want to turn off.

➌ Press MAN START/ADV to select the rightside of the display. The ON/OFF settingflashes.

➍ Use the ON/OFF buttons to set the day on oroff.

➎ Return the dial to AUTO. The controllerdisplays the time of day. When a day offarrives, the display will show NON (non-watering day) and the controller will notallow watering.

Set Delay Between StationsThe ESC-1 lets you set a delay between stationsfor each program. The delay can be from 0seconds (default) to nine hours.

➊ Turn the dial to TEST PROGRAM.

➋ Press both the ON and OFF buttons simulta-neously. The display shows DELAY.

➌ Press the PGM button to select the programyou want to delay.

➍ Use the arrow keys to select the delay time.Set the time in one-second increments forup to five minutes, and in one-minuteincrements from five minutes to nine hours.

Operating InstructionsOnce you have programmed the ESC-1, you maylet it operate automatically, or you can operate itmanually. When you operate the ESC-1 manu-ally, you do not affect any of the programmedinstructions.

Operate AutomaticallyTo operate the controller automatically, turn thedial to AUTO. The controller automatically runsthe programs you have entered, on the days andtimes you have selected.

To stop a program from operating during itsnormal cycle, turn the dial to the OFF position.The program will not start again until its nextstart time.

Operate Program(s) ManuallyYou can select, start, and manually advanceprograms for semiautomatic operation.

➊ Turn the dial to AUTO. The display shows theday of the week and the time of day.

➋ Press PGM to display the program you wantto operate.

➌ Press MAN START/ADV to start the selectedprogram.

➍ To operate more than one program, pressPGM to select another program. Press MANSTART/ADV again. The second programbegins when the first finishes. You can stackall four programs this way.

Operate Station(s) ManuallyYou can manually operate a single station orseveral stations. If you operate more than onestation, they will run in the order in which theywere selected.

➊ Turn the dial to MANUAL WATERING. Thedisplay shows the program, station number,and any watering time remaining on thatstation.

➋ Use the arrow keys to select the station youwant to operate.

➌ Press MAN START/ADV to start the selectedstation.

➍ To operate more than one station, repeatsteps 2 through 4.

➎ Return the dial to AUTO. The controllerreturns to the time of day display and thestations operate in the sequence in whichthey were selected. After the stations finishwatering, the controller returns to automaticmode.

NOTES: When you operate a stationmanually, you cannot set the amountof time the station waters. It will runfor the amount of time already pro-grammed. However, you can shut thestation off by pressing MAN START/ADV again or turning the dial to theOFF position.

If you want to see the run time remain-ing for a manually started station, turnthe dial to AUTO. If you view thedisplay with the dial set to MANUALWATERING, the run time will notcount down.

Use Test ProgramThe ESC-1 lets you run a test cycle for all thestations on a particular program. You maychoose how long the test lasts. The default valueis two minutes per station.

➊ Turn the dial to TEST PROGRAM. The displayshows the program, TEST, and the length oftime to test each station.

➋ Press PGM to display the program you wantto test.

➌ Use the arrow keys to set the length of timeto test each station, from 1 to 99 minutes.

➍ Press MAN START/ADV to start the test. Thetest time flashes. The controller suspendsany irrigation in process and runs the testprogram immediately.

➎ To add other programs to the test, press PGMto select the program. Press MAN START/ADV to stack the new program after the firstone. You can stack all four programs.

➏ To cancel the test on all programs, turn thedial to OFF.

Check Fuse Operation➊ The controller will show FUSE if a fuse is

missing or blown.

➋ To replace the fuse, gently pull out the twowhite plastic snap latches on the right side ofthe faceplate. Then swing the panel open.

➌ The fuse is located in the lower left corner ofthe controller’s circuit board, just above theterminal strip. Remove the blown fuse andreplace with a 2.5A slow-blow fuse.

Use Diagnostic CircuitBreakerThe ESC-1 has a circuit overload protectionsystem. This system causes the controller to skipa station that has an electrical short circuit,rather than blow a fuse, which would shut downthe entire system. The diagnostic circuit breakerdetects short circuits on all valves, including themaster valve.

When the controller tries to start a station thathas a short, the electronic circuit breaker sensesthe short circuit and skips that station. Thecontroller flashes the skipped station numberand “FAULT” in the display.

If this occurs, correct the problem causing theshort. Then push the FAULT RESET button toclear the flashing fault indicator.
